Mount Justice, July 8, 2011
Mount Justice was a hollowed-out mountain, serving as a secret base owned by the Justice League. The cave was filled with advanced technology, similar to the League's true base, the Watchtower.
The five teens (technically speaking, four teens and a celestial) watched as various members of the League brought in equipment and supplies. Batman had accepted all of this for a reason, and now it was time for them to understand why. They were all in civilian clothes, although Robin wore darkened sunglasses over his eyes, and Toneri, looking like a model, was dressed in a white loose shirt, tailored trousers, and stylish shoes that highlighted his celestial grace.
"This cave was the original secret sanctuary of the Justice League," Batman began. "We're calling it into service again. Since you five are so determined to fight the good fight… you'll do it on the League's terms."
He then gestured to the red robot with a blue cape and a beautiful blond woman behind him. "Red Tornado has volunteered to live here and be your supervisor. Black Canary is in charge of training; I will deploy you on missions."
"Real missions?" Robin asked.
"Yes, but covert," Batman replied.
Toneri thought to himself, 'So this will be an auxiliary team for the League, their little spy team.'
Aqualad said, "When not on duty, my name is Kaldur'ahm, but my friends call me Kaldur."
"When I'm not in costume, I am Wally, Wally West," Kid Flash said. He then pointed at Robin. "Boy Wonder over there is forbidden from telling his name to anyone, so just call him Robin."
Kid Flash looked back at Toneri. "So, we are all introduced, and we know each other's names, well, except for Robin," which made Batman narrow his eyes for a moment. Kid Flash looked back at Toneri. "What should we actually call you whenever you come with us on missions? I don't mean your name per se, I mean your code name."
Toneri sighed and replied, "I do understand the reason why you all use code names, but that thought hasn't really crossed my mind. I am not of this world, and thus I do not have anything to lose even if your so-called villains learn my name."
Aqualad stepped forward and said, "Even so, it would be better to avoid unnecessary problems later in the future."
Toneri looked at them for a moment and said, "Lunaris."
Robin raised an eyebrow and said, "Oook, why Lunaris?"
Toneri replied, "It's either that or I'd have gone for Sage or Moon Sage."
Seeing that they weren't going to get anything more out of him, Aqualad said, "Well then, Lunaris it is."
Batman, with his usual stern expression, continued while Flash added, "Basically, you guys are going to serve the League as our team of covert agents and stealth team. While you guys handle the stealth missions, the League will handle the obvious stuff." He then pointed to the lightning bolt logo on his chest. "There's a reason why we have these big targets on our chests."
"But Cadmus proves that the bad guys are getting smarter," Aquaman continued. "Batman needs a team that can operate on the sly."
"The five of you will be that team," Batman finished, "Toneri will also help supervise you and join on some missions from time to time."
"Cool!" Robin said before his smile changed to a confused frown. "Wait, the five of us?"
Batman nodded his head towards the Zeta Tubes, where Martian Manhunter came into the room accompanied by a teenage female Martian. She had shape-shifted into a near-perfect image of a pretty teenage girl but with green skin. She had green skin with medium-length red hair. She wore a white shirt with a red X-shaped harness, a short blue cape, blue gloves, a blue skirt that ended just above her knees, and blue boots.
"This is Martian Manhunter's niece," Batman said. "Miss Martian."
"Hi," she said shyly.
"Liking this gig more every minute," Wally whispered to Robin before speaking at normal volume. "I'm Kid Flash, that's Robin, Aqualad, and Lunaris. It's cool if you forget their names."
Toneri rolled his eyes at Wally's antics and suddenly thought to himself, 'Wait, was I like that with Hinata?' He thought for a moment before confidently concluding, 'No, I don't think so.' A chibi version of himself in his mind raised a flag saying, "Oh yes, you were," making it a funny scene.
Miss Martian smiled, though her hands were clasped together nervously. "I'm honored to be included."
Robin glanced back at Superboy, who was still looking upset that Superman wasn't around. "Hey, Superboy, come meet Miss M."
Miss Martian looked at Superboy with a shy smile. Her cape then melted, and her white shirt changed to black, though her red harness remained.
"I like your T-shirt," she said shyly.
Superboy smiled in response, while Robin playfully elbowed him. Toneri looked at the clone with an amused smile, while Wally threw his arm around Superboy in a comrade-like fashion.
Miss Martian turned to the corner and looked at Toneri, introducing herself. "I'm Miss Martian."
Toneri looked at her and thought to himself, 'Hmm, her life force is almost the same as the Manhunter's, but there is something different about it, almost as if it's the opposite yet the same.' Coming out of his thoughts, he introduced himself, "I am Otsutsuki Toneri." Looking back at the team for a moment, he suddenly added, "Lunaris."
"Yes, today is the day," Aqualad said.
Unknown Location
Concealed by blinding light, the hidden figures who controlled Cadmus were all having a discussion about what had happened three days ago. The Justice League had found out about their work, they lost Superboy to them, and now Guardian had taken over as the new chairman of the labs, ending its usefulness to them. Overall, they were not happy.
"In a light effort to leave Guardian in charge without a G-Gnome, we have settled means of control," one member said.
"What concerns me is the children," another member said while viewing a visual of the four leaving with Superboy. "We now know the League is willing to employ young heroes to do their dirty work… that's a dark twist."
"You are all missing something," one member said while zooming in on the image of Toneri. "This new variable in the hero business, he's the one who stopped Typhan months back. His abilities are going to be a problem."
A video of Toneri fighting Alpha Chimera was played, and the members commented on him.
"His fighting style is unique; there are no openings at all, and he moves with the barest of effort but with devastating results," one member observed as a clip of Toneri hitting Chimera's pressure points played. "He will pose a serious threat unless we can harness his powers for ourselves."
"Indeed, he and his powers will be controlled and manipulated under our will," the leader's voice said. "Also, this new team of young heroes can be played to our advantage. Even the temporary loss of the weapon may prove useful. Eventually… everyone sees The Light."
After the League members left the team to themselves, they began to interact. Toneri suddenly stood up and excused himself. Walking to a corner, he made the cross hand sign for a shadow clone, muttering, "Kage Bunshin no Jutsu" (Shadow Clone Technique). Smoke enveloped the area as the shadow clone formed.
Toneri looked at his clone before nodding. The clone headed back to where the team was. Toneri's eyes shifted, turning on his Byakugan, which then evolved into his Tenseigan with a soft azure glow and the flower-like pattern turning in both eyes.
He then used "Amenosakeme" (Heavenly Rift), opening a portal that he entered.
The Dark Side of the Moon
In space, on the dark side of the moon, with the stars shining in the distance and the Earth looking like a blue marble, a portal suddenly opened. Toneri floated out of it, the portal closing behind him. He lowered himself to the surface of the moon his outfit changing back to his familiar kimono, thinking, 'Hmm, now this is a familiar sight.'
He moved around, his Tenseigan scanning the area. He suddenly stopped at a spot where his eyes pulsed while holding the tiger hand sign. "Kai" (Release), he said, breaking the Genjutsu. The barren landscape shimmered and revealed a massive crater stretching out beneath him.
Toneri made another hand sign and muttered, "Doton: Chidokaku" (Earth Release: Earth Moving Core). The ground trembled and caved in, revealing a large hole. He floated down, observing the collapsing surface close back seamlessly with the Genjutsu back in place.
As he descended further, he came across a massive seal painted with intricate Fuinjutsu, resembling a spider web. Each line and curve of the seal was meticulously crafted, glowing with faint, otherworldly energy. The seal's complexity indicated its powerful nature. Toneri passed through it as if it were water, feeling a slight tingle as the Fuinjutsu recognized his presence and allowed him through.
On the other side, Toneri emerged and was greeted with the sight of a grand temple, a perfect blend of the Dragon Palace and his temple on the moon. The temple's exterior was majestic, with tall, ornate pillars adorned with the Tenseigan symbol. The walls were covered with celestial engravings that seemed to pulse with energy. The artificial light inside mimicked the serene glow of the moon, casting a soft luminescence over the entire structure.
The vast space inside spanned three miles, Toneri's personal territory. The inner courtyard featured a beautiful garden with plants and trees from both Earth and the moon, meticulously cultivated using the Tenseigan's power. Structures resembling pagodas and small shrines were scattered around, each serving a specific purpose. The central hall was enormous, with high ceilings and large pillars that supported the structure, each pillar engraved with stories of the Otsutsuki clan and their history.
The temple was filled with items and structures created using the Tenseigan and Yin-Yang Release. The craftsmanship resembled the elegance of his home in the Elemental Nations, with intricate designs and symbols. The flooring was made of polished moonstone, reflecting the artificial light and giving the whole place an ethereal glow.
Looking down, he saw his puppets, created from his Puppet Reincarnation technique. The human puppets were dressed in traditional garb, their movements fluid and lifelike, appearing almost human. The bird puppets soared gracefully through the air, their wings reflecting the light in a dazzling display.
Toneri floated down to the entrance of his temple, where his puppet maids were there to receive him. These maids were finely crafted, their delicate features and elegant movements making them appear almost real. They bowed in unison as Toneri passed, their movements synchronized perfectly.
Moving through his temple, he reached the throne room. This room was grand and intricately decorated with symbols of the Tenseigan. The walls were lined with banners bearing the Otsutsuki crest, and the ceiling was adorned with a mural depicting the history of his clan. The throne itself was made of moonstone and adorned with celestial symbols, sitting at the center of the room on a raised platform.
His clone sat on the throne, looking at him for a moment before saying, "Well, you sure took your time. Anyways, now that you are here, my job is done. Here's the report."
The clone burst into smoke, transferring all its memories to Toneri. He received detailed information about the construction of the moon temple, including the intricate designs and mechanisms put in place.
Toneri noted that the clone had managed to open the Amenosakeme to several worlds but not the Elemental Nations. This piqued his interest and concern. As he absorbed the clone's memories, he began to reflect on everything he had witnessed and experienced since arriving on Earth.
'So much has changed,' he thought. 'This world is both similar and different from the Elemental Nations.
As he moved from his throne to his quarters, he continued to ponder. 'The Justice League, the young heroes, they all have something to fight for. Should I have told them of what I saw down in Cadmus, oh well they will find out themselves. This temple, this sanctuary, it's a start until I can find my way home.'
Entering his quarters, he marveled at the intricate designs, the familiar yet new surroundings that he had crafted. 'I have established my base here, a place of refuge and strategy. The seal, the defenses, everything is in place. Now, I must learn and adapt.'
Toneri lay down, feeling the weight of his thoughts. 'I wonder what those worlds are, well there's always time to explore them and see if they hold a key to me getting back home but For now, I rest and prepare for what's to come.'
With these thoughts, Toneri closed his eyes, the glow of the Tenseigan fading as he drifted into a contemplative sleep, ready to face the challenges of this new world.
