Eliza's Pov
I dialed the hospital for the second time that morning, the receptionist had cut it when I had introduced myself the first time.
"Hello, Lincoln Alfred, again" I said into the phone and I'm met with sudden enthusiasm and excitement.
"Good morning Mr Alfred, how can I help you? I mean how can we help you?" The ecstatic receptionist asked.
'Bring back my assistant and place her in my hands
"I need a report on one of your patients, he is my distant relative" I lied and I heard her giggle, it was possible some other hospital nurses were with her.
"Oh, if we could just have his name I would provide you with all you want." She said and I rolled my eyes in irritation, shouldn't a patient's information be private?
"Nicholas Vance," I told her and she repeated the name and I heard keyboards tapping in the back ground.
"Found him, he is still under admission his wounds are yet to completely dry off. He is Doctor Steven's special patient." She explained and I nodded, a little relieved. Who was Doctor Steven? Eliza never mentioned him.
"Okay, what about Elizabeth Vance?" I finally asked, maybe she was Ill? Maybe she had a terminal illness? Those were the only reasons for her leaving that made sense to me.
"Ermm… she is out as his next of kin, she is not under treatment." The receptionist explained and he nodded, a bit satisfied now.
"Thank you for your help Alisha," I said, and I could hear her suck in her breath. "But try not to give out patient's information
Carelessly."
"Okay. Thank you Mr Alfred."
I lay back on my seat and seethed just as Alexander walked in holding a bunch of paperwork.
"I thought I said I wanted a soft copy, why the hell do you have a library with you?"
"This is the written application you requested for," he explained and realization dawned on me.
I had wanted to give them to Eliza when she resumed. So she could sort them out right here in my office while I watched, but she already sent in her resignation letter, the joke was on me.
"I don't know, just get rid of it or something." I snapped at him and he remained where he was.
He looked like he wanted to say something. "What?" I asked, sitting up, sitting and reaching for my bottle of bourbon.
"Did you fire Eliza? I mean I don't mean any disrespect but we haven't heard from her in a long time. Did you fire her sir?" He asked and I was provoked enough to punch him in the eye. Why would I fire the one thing that brought me genuine happiness?
"Leave my office before I throw you out." I said instead, he put down the paper work and left.
I remained with my thoughts, and it took a great amount of control not to snap and break down the whole office.
Was it possible that because her brother had to undergo surgery that was why she broke up with me or there was someone else in the picture? Had she fallen in love and decided I was not good enough for her because that would really hurt me.
I don't think I could live this way. I had tried to order a sex worker but it hadn't gone well, I almost puked when her hands touched me and I knew that was not normal behavior.
I needed Eliza back again.
Eliza's pov
"I will be right in." I said as I tried to balance the box of cupcakes and his new outfit on my hands, my phone was wedged between my ear and right shoulders.
Nick was finally leaving the hospital and my plans to leave New York has also officially kickstarted.
I went over to his ward and met a clean ward, Nick was awake and smiling brightly as I walked in. It was the first time I have seen him happy in a long time.
I placed the cake on the table and handed him the cloth before slipping my phone into my pocket.
"You look horrible," I teased him and he actually laughed, I couldn't help it. I walked into his arms and gave him a tight hug.
My best friend was finally okay, it has always been the both of us over the world, running and hiding. I really was happy he was finally okay.
"I mean, I could say the same for you. Congratulations?" He responded and I managed to smile, I wasn't going to ruin the mood by feeling sad for myself.
"Is it really…..?" I asked him and he nodded. When had he gotten this mature? Normally he would snap and threaten to kill Lincoln.
"It's probably going to be your best decision. You'd make a really great mother"
"Oh, I think I cheated the hospital, I should have paid extra for the anger management." I joked and he laughed. "I brought you cupcakes. Eat up! We're going home today!" I told him as I giggled like a child.
"You have cupcake icing all over your cheeks," he said as he wiped it off my mouth.
"Thank you, this is so weird and different and gosh Nick! We're growing old!" I sighed and we were quiet, wallowing in companionable silence.
I wonder how he would react when I told him I was leaving the big Apple in a few weeks.
"You can say that again, I remember when you were this tall and fell in love with any guy that tells you hi." He reminded me and I laughed out loud, clutching my chest as I did.
"Before we become permanent guests in this establishment, let us leave." I told him, standing up from the edge of the bed.
"Wait, you didn't burn it down?" He joked and I swatted him in the arm.
"Let's go home Nick!" I said, picking up the rest of the cupcake and his luggage.
I smiled, trials were still more to come.
