Chapter 8 - Chapter 7

As Dumbledore arrived at the Boundary of the Ossuary, the air seemed to hum with an ancient weight. The Bones Family Estate loomed ahead, its ivy-clad walls holding secrets as old as the wizarding world itself. He took a deep breath, bracing himself for the discussion ahead.

Madam Amelia Bones, the no-nonsense head of the Department of Magical Law Enforcement (DMLE), was waiting for him. She cut through the tension like a seasoned Auror, her gaze sharp and her posture commanding.

"Dumbledore," she greeted, her tone as crisp as a freshly charmed parchment. "Thanks for coming on such short notice. We need to talk about Sirius Black. His escape from Azkaban has everyone on edge."

Dumbledore gave a solemn nod. He knew the gravity of the situation all too well. Sirius Black's escape had caused quite a stir, and not in a good way. It was like finding out your favorite wizarding treat had been replaced with a Muggle fruitcake—utterly unsettling.

"I understand, Madam Bones," Dumbledore said, his voice carrying the weight of unspoken worries. "We must act quickly to prevent any further chaos."

"Exactly," Bones agreed, her face a mask of determination. "I've mobilized the Aurors to track him down. But I need your expertise. You know the wizarding world better than most."

"Of course," Dumbledore responded. "I'll do whatever I can to help."

Bones leaned in slightly, her brow furrowing with the intensity of someone who doesn't miss the fine details. "There's something you need to know. As I was reviewing Sirius Black's case files, I found a major discrepancy: he was never given a trial."

Dumbledore's eyebrows shot up, as if he'd just been hit with a surprise Quidditch snitch. "Never given a trial?" he echoed, the surprise evident in his tone.

"Right," Bones continued, her expression serious. "Back when Black was supposedly tried, I was a Senior Auror and Barty Crouch Sr. was in charge of the DMLE. Even then, it was highly irregular for such a serious case to bypass due process."

Dumbledore nodded slowly, the implications sinking in. The fact that Sirius Black had been denied a trial cast serious doubt on the legitimacy of his conviction. It was like discovering that a favorite magical creature was actually a cleverly disguised garden gnome—disturbing and disorienting.

"This is troubling news," Dumbledore said, his voice grave. "We need to dig deeper into how and why this happened. There might be more at play here than we initially thought."

Bones, ever the epitome of determination, nodded in agreement. "I'll leave no stone unturned in finding the truth. Justice needs to be served, Dumbledore. No matter what it takes."

With their course of action set, the two wizards prepared to dive into the murky depths of Sirius Black's case. It was clear that this was only the beginning of a much larger and more complicated story. And as they faced the unknown, both were resolute in their commitment to uncover the truth and restore order to the wizarding world.

As Dumbledore and Madam Bones navigated the shadowy corridors of the Ossuary, Dumbledore couldn't shake the feeling that something was seriously off. Madam Bones's bombshell about Sirius Black's lack of a trial had only deepened his suspicions, like adding a splash of lemon juice to a cut—sharp and unsettling.

"It's definitely puzzling," Dumbledore said, his voice bouncing softly off the old stone walls. "James Potter and Sirius Black were practically joined at the hip back in their Hogwarts days. It's hard to believe Sirius would just throw that away."

Madam Bones gave him a thoughtful nod, her eyes fixed on Dumbledore as he continued.

"And let's not forget," Dumbledore added, with a gravity that made the air feel heavier, "Sirius was supposed to be Harry Potter's godfather. It's hard to imagine he'd harbor any malice towards the child of his closest friend."

Madam Bones's face grew more serious, her concern etched in every line. "If Sirius Black is actually innocent," she started, her voice trailing off as the weight of the revelation sunk in, "it means he's been rotting in Azkaban for over a decade, while the real culprit is still out there."

"Precisely," Dumbledore finished, his tone heavy. "An innocent man imprisoned, and the true perpetrator still free—this is a disaster of epic proportions."

"Yes," Madam Bones agreed, her eyes narrowing. "I have a sneaking suspicion that Barty Crouch Sr.'s bias against Dark Families played a big role. The Black family's reputation might have clouded his judgment."

Dumbledore's expression turned grim as he considered the implications of Crouch's prejudice. "It's very possible," he said. "Crouch Sr.'s notorious for his rigid views and ruthless pursuit of what he considered justice. If his biases influenced Sirius Black's case, it would be a monumental miscarriage of justice."

Madam Bones's jaw set in determination. "I'm planning to launch a thorough investigation," she declared. "If there's been any foul play, we'll uncover it and set things right."

Dumbledore gave her a reassuring nod. "Our priority must be finding Sirius," he said firmly. "We need to get to the bottom of what really happened on that night."

Madam Bones nodded in agreement, her resolve unshaken. "The Auror department is already on it," she said. "Every available resource will be dedicated to tracking down Sirius Black and bringing him to justice."

With a shared commitment to unraveling the tangled web of deception, Dumbledore and Madam Bones continued their discussion, strategizing their next moves. Each was determined to follow every lead and uncover the hidden truths buried deep in the shadows of the past.

As they traversed the dimly lit halls of the Ossuary, Dumbledore couldn't shake the feeling that something wasn't adding up. Madam Bones's unsettling revelation about Sirius Black's trial—or lack thereof—had cast a dark shadow over their conversation.

"So," Dumbledore said, trying to lighten the mood with a gentle smile, "how is young Susan these days? I trust she's enjoying her summer and taking full advantage of the countryside?"

Madam Bones's lips twitched into a faint smile, though it didn't quite reach her eyes. "Indeed, Headmaster. Susan is staying with the Abbotts in the countryside. She's been keeping busy with activities and soaking up the fresh air. It's a nice change from the hustle and bustle of the city."

Dumbledore's expression remained thoughtful as he processed this. Though he was outwardly interested in Susan's summer break, he couldn't ignore the tension in Madam Bones's demeanor. It was as if there were hidden concerns she wasn't quite ready to share.

"Everything alright, Madam Bones?" he asked, his voice gentle but insistent.

Madam Bones hesitated, a flicker of unease crossing her face. After a moment, she spoke, her voice tinged with concern. "There's something odd going on with Susan. She's been experiencing strange magical occurrences—like the accidental magic that young witches and wizards display during their early years."

Dumbledore's eyebrows shot up in surprise. "Unusual for her age and experience?" he guessed, a hint of concern in his voice.

"Precisely," Madam Bones confirmed. "Susan is level-headed and exceptionally bright. These incidents are completely out of character for her."

Dumbledore nodded, his mind already racing through potential explanations. "It sounds like we should investigate this thoroughly," he suggested. "It's important to understand the root cause of these manifestations and ensure she receives the appropriate support."

Madam Bones's face softened with relief. "Thank you, Albus. Your support means a lot."

Dumbledore offered a reassuring smile. "Of course, Amelia. We'll get to the bottom of this."

As he considered the situation, Dumbledore couldn't help but draw on his recent conversations with Professor Xavier. The idea of Susan's abilities being linked to mutant traits crossed his mind. Mutants, as he had learned, were individuals with unique genetic gifts that went beyond the normal scope of magical abilities.

With a sense of urgency, Dumbledore began to explain the concept of mutants to Madam Bones. "Mutants are individuals born with genetic variations that grant them extraordinary abilities. It's important we approach Susan's situation with care, as she might be experiencing something similar."

Madam Bones nodded, taking in the information. "I understand. Susan's safety and well-being are crucial. We need to handle this with caution."

"Exactly," Dumbledore agreed. "I suggest we consult with Professor Xavier at the Xavier Institute for Mutant Education and Outreach. He's already working with a magical mutant and can provide valuable insight into Susan's condition."

Madam Bones gave a decisive nod. "That sounds like a good plan. Please contact Professor Xavier and arrange a meeting. We need all the help we can get."

Dumbledore's eyes twinkled with approval. "I will do so immediately. I'm confident that with Professor Xavier's expertise, Susan will receive the support she needs."

As Madam Bones and Dumbledore concluded their discussion, Dumbledore made his way back to Hogwarts with renewed determination. The tasks ahead were daunting—Sirius Black's escape and Susan Bones's emerging abilities both presented significant challenges. But with the collaboration between Hogwarts and the Xavier Institute, he felt a sense of hope that they could navigate these complexities and support Susan in her journey.

With a final, thoughtful glance at the Ossuary, Dumbledore apparated back to Hogwarts, ready to reach out to Professor Xavier and begin the next phase of their investigation.

When Dumbledore returned to Hogwarts, he was practically buzzing with urgency. He had barely touched down before he grabbed Fawkes, muttering something about "transporting him to Professor Xavier's office like yesterday." With a flash of phoenix fire, he was off.

Dumbledore arrived at the door to Xavier's office and gave it a hearty knock, as if he were announcing the arrival of a particularly important guest. The door swung open, and there was Professor Charles Xavier, looking like he'd been expecting a visitor and was happy to see him.

"Albus!" Xavier greeted with a warm smile, gesturing for Dumbledore to come in. "What's the occasion?"

Dumbledore stepped inside, his face a mask of seriousness. "I come bearing matters of utmost importance, Charles," he began, his tone making it clear that this was not your average tea-and-biscuits visit.

Xavier's expression shifted to one of curiosity mixed with concern. "Please, have a seat," he said, motioning to the chair opposite his desk. "Let's hear what's troubling you."

Dumbledore settled into the chair, diving straight into his tale. "Well, it appears that Sirius Black, who just managed to break out of Azkaban, never actually had a proper trial. This has thrown the wizarding world into a bit of a tizzy."

Xavier's brows knitted together as he listened. "No trial? That's certainly unusual. And what about Susan Bones? You mentioned something about her experiencing strange magical occurrences?"

Dumbledore nodded gravely. "Yes, exactly. Susan's been having what can only be described as weirdly timed bouts of accidental magic—like when young witches and wizards lose control of their powers. This is pretty odd for her age, and it suggests she might be dealing with something new."

Xavier's eyes widened slightly, processing the implications. "So, we're dealing with a double whammy here: Sirius Black's questionable conviction and Susan's puzzling magical developments."

Dumbledore gave a small sigh of relief, glad to see Xavier grasp the gravity of the situation. "Yes, that's the gist of it. I believe if we pool our resources and expertise, we can make headway on both fronts."

Xavier's face brightened with a reassuring smile. "Absolutely, Albus. Let's put our heads together and figure out a plan. We'll tackle these challenges with all the skill and determination we can muster."

The two old friends dove into a brainstorming session, each bringing their own unique perspectives to the table. Dumbledore laid out the specifics of Sirius Black's situation while Xavier shared his insights on the potential implications of Susan's emerging abilities. Their collaboration was a seamless blend of magical wisdom and mutant expertise.

As they hashed out their strategies, Dumbledore couldn't help but feel a flicker of optimism. With Xavier's help, they had a fighting chance to uncover the truth about Sirius's conviction and support Susan through her magical transformation.

The clock was ticking, but Dumbledore and Xavier were ready to face whatever came next, united in their quest for justice and understanding.
