Chapter 129 - The Mine [part 3]

The Journey of Suzuki Kyōi: The Dark Force Controlling the Undead

As the undead rose again, regenerated by the mysterious force controlling them, Kyōi's group was trapped between disbelief and fear.

The creatures, lifeless but animated by a dark power, seemed unstoppable.

Despite the collapse and the rubble that should have ended the battle, the undead continued to rise, as if driven by an invisible hand.

Kyōi stared at the creatures with an increasingly furrowed expression.

It wasn't just their resurrection that troubled him but what it represented.

It wasn't natural.

Someone, or something, was controlling these creatures, and until that force was stopped, they would be trapped in an endless cycle of battle.

"Someone is controlling them," he said decisively to the mercenaries. "It's not normal for them to rise like this. There's a mind behind all this, and we need to find it."

Renidori, still catching his breath, turned to Kyōi.

"But how can we fight an enemy we can't see? If these creatures keep rising, we can't win."

"We need to go deeper," Kyōi replied, gripping his katana tightly.

"The source of this power is surely in the mine, and if we can destroy what commands them, we'll surely put an end to this battle."

"Besides… it's likely the cause of the legend surrounding this mine."

As he spoke, the undead rose again with a slow, eerie movement, their contorted, disjointed bodies emitting creaks as they prepared for another attack.

The greenish glow that animated their skulls seemed to intensify, as if the threat they posed had become even greater than before.

Kyōi carefully observed the horde before him.

Kyōi intently watched the rising horde of undead before him.

The creatures' movements were slow but relentless, and the greenish glow pulsing from their eye sockets seemed to grow in intensity, as if a dark force was concentrating all its power to regenerate its servants.

"We're trapped in this cycle," Kyōi thought, gripping his katana tightly, the metal emitting a faint glint in the flickering torchlight.

"Until we find the source, we'll be fighting endlessly."

"You heard Kyōi," said Renidori, his voice tense but determined.

"We need to go deeper. We can't face them here; we'll be overrun."

The mercenaries nodded, their faces marked with fear but determined not to give up.

The creatures advanced, and with every creak of their bones, the sense of imminent threat grew stronger.

"Retreat into the tunnels!" Kyōi ordered, his voice firm and resolute.

"We'll find the source and destroy it, but we can't waste energy here."

The group moved as one, retreating toward a narrower passage that opened on the side of the chamber.

The shadows of the undead followed slowly, as if they were aware that time was on their side.

As the group retreated into the tunnels, the darkness seemed to grow thicker and more oppressive.

The torches cast faint light, creating menacing shadows on the stone walls of the mine.

The undead advanced slowly, but Kyōi knew they couldn't stop; the force animating them was stronger than they could imagine, and every passing minute brought them closer to a hopeless battle.

The walls of the tunnel grew narrower, and the mercenaries struggled to advance.

The humidity made the ground slippery, and the sharp rocks seemed to obstruct every step.

Occasionally, one of the mercenaries stumbled, and the sound of their movements echoed through the tunnel, amplifying their anxiety.

"We can't keep going like this," gasped one of the warriors, his face tense with fatigue.

"If these passages narrow any further, we'll be trapped."

Kyōi knew he was right.

The rough terrain was slowing their advance, and the undead, though slow, were relentless.

He could hear the creaking of bones behind them, a sound drawing ever closer.

Renidori, advancing beside Kyōi, paused for a moment to glance back, trying to gauge how close the creatures were.

"They won't let us go," he muttered, almost to himself.

"We need to find a place to stand and fight."

Kyōi nodded, his eyes scanning ahead, desperately searching for a way out or a way to buy time.

"We need to keep moving," he said finally.

"But we need to find a larger space. There, we can make a stand."

The feeling of being pursued intensified, and Kyōi could feel the tension growing among his men.

However, his mind remained focused. Despite the difficulties, they couldn't give up.

After several minutes of marching, the tunnel widened slightly, revealing a small natural alcove within the rock.

"There," Kyōi pointed, as he led the way toward the space.

"We'll rest for a moment. It might be our only chance for a break."

The group crowded into the small area, some leaning against the walls to catch their breath.

The dim torchlight revealed the tired and worried faces of the mercenaries.

Renidori turned to Kyōi, wiping the sweat from his brow.

"What do we do if they keep following us? We can't keep running forever."

Kyōi looked into the eyes of his comrades, aware that they were fighting something far greater than themselves.

"We can't stop them here," he said calmly.

"But we can't keep running either. We need to find the source of this power. Only then can we destroy what controls them."

One of the mercenaries, a woman with dark hair and a determined gaze, approached Kyōi.

"How do we know the source is deeper down? What if we're only moving further away from the solution?"

Kyōi stared at her for a moment, then replied firmly.

"There's no other choice. If we stay here, we'll be trapped between the narrow walls and these creatures. We have to take the risk."

Just then, a distant but distinct sound echoed through the tunnel: the creaking of bones drawing closer, slow and steady but impossible to ignore.

"The clock is ticking," Renidori said, drawing his sword. "We need to move."

Kyōi stood up, his katana ready in his hands.

"Stay together," he told the group. "We keep going down. And remember, we need to find the source. Only then can we break this curse."

With torches flickering in the growing darkness, the group set off again, the sound of their footsteps sliding over the rocks mixing with the sinister noise of the undead chasing them.

They knew the road ahead would be treacherous, but Kyōi wouldn't let fear stop them.
