Chapter 130 - The Mystery [part 1]

The Journey of Suzuki Kyōi: Into the Heart of Darkness

Kyōi's group resumed their march, slipping deeper into the heart of the mine as the echo of the undead's footsteps grew ever closer.

The torches barely illuminated the uneven path, and the mercenaries' labored breathing was the only sound, aside from the unsettling creaking of the creatures following them.

The air grew heavier as they descended further. The increasing humidity and slippery ground made every step a struggle against falling. The rocky walls seemed to tighten around them, and the darkness became almost tangible, as if the mine itself wanted to swallow them whole.

"We need to find a larger space," said Kyōi, his gaze fixed ahead. "We're vulnerable in here."

Renidori nodded, glancing at the tunnels branching off in every direction.

As the group pressed on, the mine seemed more alive, as if every sound, every step, was amplified by the darkness surrounding them.

The creaking of the undead bones grew more insistent, a constant echo that threatened to overwhelm their senses.

"We must keep moving," said Kyōi, his face stiff with tension. "If we stop here, we'll be overrun."

Renidori nodded, trying to maintain his composure.

"There are too many tunnels. Choosing the wrong direction could mean our end."

As the group advanced, something in the tunnel shifted.

It wasn't just the darkness enveloping them, but a strange feeling of emptiness, a total absence of any vital energy or natural presence. It was as if everything around them had vanished, leaving only silence and endless space.

Kyōi closed his eyes once again, trying to sense the world with his divine intuition.

He concentrated, expanding his awareness through the tunnels, searching for any sign of life or movement. But what he felt was disorienting: the tunnels had no end.

Every direction he explored extended infinitely, as though the underground labyrinth was a borderless illusion, a trap designed to imprison them forever.

"It's not just darkness," he finally said, opening his eyes and looking at his companions with visible concern.

"It's as if we're in a place where nothing exists. I can't sense any boundary… every tunnel seems to stretch on forever."

Renidori looked at him, his face tense with unease.

"What do you mean? How can we be in a place without end? There must be an end somewhere."

Kyōi shook his head slowly.

"I can't feel anything. It's like we're suspended in nothingness, with no clear direction."

The group stopped, the mercenaries exchanging uncertain glances. The echo of their footsteps, which had followed them until now, seemed to fade away, as though even the sound had been devoured by the void.

The tension mounted, but Kyōi knew they couldn't stop. The only option was to keep moving, even though they had no idea where they were going.

"No matter how impossible it seems," Kyōi finally said, gripping his katana tightly.

"We have to choose a path and follow it. If we stop, this place could consume us entirely."

With silent determination, he pointed to a tunnel on their left, one of many that stretched into the void before them.

"Let's take this one. We can't know which way is right, but we must move."

Renidori nodded, and the group, with heavy hearts but undeterred resolve, resumed their march.

Every step seemed to take them farther from any point of reference, but they had no other choice. Suspended in an endless void, they pressed on, hoping that somewhere, at the end of that seemingly infinite tunnel, lay the key to breaking the curse.

The group ventured deeper into the chosen tunnel, the air growing colder and denser, as if each breath became a greater struggle.

The rock walls, which once seemed solid, began to shift into an almost ethereal texture, as though reality itself was fading away.

Renidori tightened his grip on his weapon, sensing the strange alteration around them.

"Something's not right," he whispered, his voice breaking with unease.

"This doesn't feel like a mine anymore… it feels like we're walking through someone's dream."

Kyōi nodded, his face impassive but his mind alert. He knew they were entering a realm beyond normal human understanding, perhaps the very source of the curse that plagued these lands.

The legends spoke of an abandoned place from which no one ever returned, a crossroad between the world of the living and the realm of shadows, and he was beginning to suspect they had wandered straight into it.

Suddenly, a piercing sound shattered the silence, a noise like a muffled scream coming from unfathomable depths. The mercenaries froze, terror evident in their eyes.

"It's just an illusion," Kyōi said, trying to remain calm.

"We mustn't give in to panic. Whatever it is, it's this place trying to break us."

But Renidori seemed less convinced.

"What if it's not an illusion? What if the mine itself is calling us, trying to drag us deeper?"

Kyōi didn't answer immediately.

He knew Renidori wasn't entirely wrong: the entire mine seemed alive, a creature made of darkness and fear.

Each step seemed to bring them not closer to an exit, but toward a center, a dark heart that awaited them with patient hunger.

"We have to keep going," he finally said. "Stopping means surrendering to this place."

They continued down the tunnel, but something changed.

The shadows around them grew thicker, as if they were moving, vibrating slightly with a will of their own, and the undead seemed to be perfectly in sync with them.

Then, without warning, a figure emerged from the darkness.

It wasn't one of the undead that had pursued them, but something else entirely.

It stood tall, cloaked in a robe as dark as the abyss, its face hidden beneath a deep hood. It made no sound, yet its presence was suffocating, as if every particle of air was absorbed by its mere existence.

"Who are you?" Kyōi asked, cautiously brandishing his katana, but the figure did not respond.
