Chereads / Darkness to Dawn / Chapter 22 - Filthy Rich

Chapter 22 - Filthy Rich

After driving for over two hours they finally reached the city's main highway, this was the only exit out of the city and it was packed full of church 'guards'.

Johan knew that it would be hard to leave the city through here but he had a plan. Upon getting to about 100 feet from the blockade he turned to peanuts,

"Time to do your magic girl."

Von knew something was up with that cat and even Jacinth was quite wary of it so when he heard Johan speak to it his attention was quickly drawn to it.

Peanuts got up and stretched as it yawned, Maya was quite amazed as she was unaware of it's cognitive nature, she looked at von but he wasn't surprised at all as it wasn't showing on his face but maybe he was.

After stretching, peanuts leaped up from the speeding car, almost giving Maya a heart attack, Von was also quite stunned not expecting the cat to take such a dangerous action.

Johan didn't seemed bothered as he hit the gas, speeding up even more.

Just when Maya was about to say something, a large shadow was cast over them, she looked up only to see a white fluffy cloud soaring up ahead.

"What in the world is that!!" She felt her mind shutting down, the turns in the situation were too abrupt to comprehend, like watching a movie and having it on fast-forward at regular intervals.

The white 'cloud' came crashing down on the blockade, sending the church's men flying.

After the little stunt it pulled, peanuts quickly reverted to it's 'cat' size just in time for Johan to speed by and it landed back on the car seat.

What precise coordination, Von knew that such level of synergy could only be acquired through repeated practice.

'Just what did this geek-cat duo do behind the curtains?' He thought.

After easily passing the blockade they moved at top speed for another two hours, swerving and turning randomly until they finally came to a stop at a rather deserted beach.

Looking around Von concluded that they were in the middle of nowhere, behind them was just pure wilderness and ahead was empty stretches of sea.

"Now is someone going to tell me what's going on?!!" Although Von was a cool and collected person, cold even, he was still by birth a demon and three emotional traits that were hard to change for a demon were;

Easy irritability, impulsive actions and uncontrollable wrath.

He had curbed his wrath and impulses to a certain level while still a demon and the despair he felt during the early periods after his fall were enough to quell his irritability.

But the situation was just totally incredible, the best description he could give was that everyone was out of character all of a sudden, including him.

"I know the whole situation is bizarre but I have a very reasonable explanation, just wait in about 2 minutes from now we'll be able to head to a totally safe environment.

Von looked at Johan and just when he was about to say something, the sound of clashing waves broke the silence and serenity of the scene.

"Why do you always have to draw attention when someone's about to say something!!" Von found this quite irksome.

It was like Johan waited for when someone was going to say something then he would pull off something distracting like he was avoiding questions.

Looking ahead it was actually a yacht sailing through the waves towards them.

'Just how rich is this guy?' Von thought. 'First a 'Ghini now a f**king yacht.'

Not long after the yacht was moored close enough for them to climb in after a brief swim.

Von kept looking at the car and Johan could easily tell what was on his mind. Years of pilfering to survive had made Von quite scroogy, he wasn't greedy, but he wouldn't let a single grain go to waste. Demon prince he might have been but the fact remained that as a human he was dirt poor.

"We can't take it with us, the church most probably already attached a tracker to it and are likely to be on their way here." Johan said as he patted Vons back.

'Why do I feel like an extra in a billionaire CEO plot.' Von thought. Ever since he learnt to use a cellphone he had been immersing himself in online literature.

Johan had them throw away their phones and every other electronic gadget they had into the water, well only von had one, but still, safety first.

Soon after, they were finally on their way to God knows where.
