The wagon rumbled down the winding road, pulled by a pair of sturdy horses. But these were no ordinary beasts of burden. Kai watched in fascination as steam billowed from pipes along their flanks, powered by glowing quintessence crystals.
"We'll reach Solaris in seven days," the Knight Captain Recruiter said from the front of the wagon. "We have a few stops to make on the way to collect the other recruits."
Kai nodded, his mind awhirl. Seven days. In just a week, his old life would be left far behind. What would the capital be like? Who were these other recruits?
As if summoned by his thoughts, the wagon rolled to a stop at the outskirts of a small village. The recruiter hopped down and beckoned for Kai to follow.
Waiting for them was a boy who looked to be a few years older than Kai. He was tall and heavily muscled, with a friendly grin stretching across his broad face.
"Kai, meet Magnus. He's the recruit from this village."
"Nice to meet you!" Magnus boomed, clapping Kai on the shoulder with enough force to make him stumble.

Kai mustered a smile in return, trying not to feel too inadequate next to Magnus' bulk. They followed the recruiter to the village inn, Magnus chattering excitedly the whole way.
"I can't wait to show everyone what I can do! My power is seriously awesome. Plus, the money from Solaris will really help my village."
Kai made appropriately impressed noises. He was happy for Magnus, truly. But a small, selfish part of him wondered what it would be like to feel such eagerness instead of the dread coiled in his own gut.
The inn was warm and inviting, the smell of roasting meat making Kai's stomach rumble. They took a table with some of the other patrons, and bowls of hearty stew were placed in front of them. Kai was just lifting his spoon to his mouth when the door crashed open.
Six rough-looking men armed to the teeth barged in, led by a sneering bandit with a jagged scar across his cheek.
"Nobody move!" Scarface barked. "Hand over your gems, grimoires and coin, and maybe we'll let you live!"
The bandits made short work of the innkeeper and the other patrons, tying them up and tossing them in the corner. One of the bandits set a heavy iron key on a shelf, presumably for the chains now restraining the captives.
Kai's mind raced. He had to do something! As subtly as he could, he opened a small portal beneath the table. His hand disappeared into it and emerged next to the key. In a flash, the key vanished into his pocket dimension.
The bandits were too busy gloating over their haul to notice. They chained Magnus and Kai alongside the others. Heart pounding, Kai opened another portal behind his back. The key dropped into his waiting palm.
As he worked at the lock, Kai caught Magnus' eye and jerked his chin at the bandits. Magnus winked.
The moment Kai's chains fell away, Magnus surged to his feet with a roar. His skin rippled and changed, taking on the rough gray texture of stone. He barreled into the bandits like a living boulder, scattering them like ninepins.
Kai gaped in awe. So this was Magnus' essence ability - Earth Crust! While the bandits were distracted, Kai portaled the other hostages to safety outside the inn.
By the time he returned, Magnus had subdued the last of the bandits. The two boys surveyed the destruction, breathing hard.
"Holy essence, Kai!" Magnus crowed. "Did you see that? I was unstoppable!"
"We both were," Kai said, surprised to find himself grinning. "Your strength is incredible, but we couldn't have done it without my portals either."
As they went to find the Knight Captain Recruiter and report what had happened, a spark of excitement kindled in Kai's chest. He had used his ability to help people, to make a real difference. Maybe this journey would bring more than fear and pain.
Maybe, just maybe, Kai would find a strength he never knew he had.

The wagon wheels creaked as they resumed their journey toward Solaris, the capital now six days away. With Magnus by his side, Kai felt a renewed sense of purpose. The earlier encounter had awakened something within him—a thrill of adventure that mingled with his innate caution.
"Wait until you see the Royal Arena," Lancelot said, his voice filled with a pride that seemed to resonate with the clanking of his armor. "It's a sight to behold, especially during the Essence Games."

Magnus, who had proven himself not just a formidable fighter but a reliable companion, grinned. "I'm betting the arena hasn't seen anything like me yet."
Kai laughed, the sound mingling with the chirping of evening crickets as the sun began to set. "Nor anything like my portals, I'd wager."
Their camaraderie was interrupted as the wagon rolled into a dense fog that seemed out of place, given the clear skies moments before. Lancelot pulled on the reins, bringing the horses to a slow trot. "We're entering the Misty Hollows. Keep your wits about you; it's said that spirits roam here, drawn to essence-rich travelers."
As if on cue, a chilling wail cut through the fog, and the temperature around them dropped. Kai felt his essence stir, the air thick with magic.

Without hesitation, Kai reached into his portal dimension, drawing out a luminescent orb that Lancelot had given them earlier. "Use this if you encounter spirits," the knight had instructed. "It'll light your path and ward off minor specters."
Kai crushed the orb in his hand, and a brilliant light erupted, scattering the mist. The specter's form wavered, a shriek echoing as it retreated, thwarted by the light.
"Magnus, stay close," Kai warned, his eyes scanning the thinning fog. "These spirits can drain your essence if you're not careful."
Magnus nodded, his expression serious. "I've got your back, Kai."
As the fog lifted, the road became clear once more, and the spectral threat seemed to have passed. Lancelot nodded in approval. "Well done, lads. You handled that well."

Kai felt his essence swell slightly, a tingling sensation that came with gaining experience. He was growing, becoming stronger with each challenge they faced.
As night fell, they made camp by a small brook. Lancelot took the first watch, allowing Kai and Magnus to rest. As they sat by the dying fire, Magnus spoke softly, "You know, Kai, before this, I never thought I'd find someone who'd stand beside me in battle. I'm glad it's you."
Kai smiled, the firelight reflecting in his eyes. "I feel the same, Magnus. Tomorrow, we reach the town of Elderglen. Who knows what awaits us there?"
Magnus chuckled, tossing a small stone into the fire. "Whatever it is, we'll face it together."
As they settled into their makeshift beds, the stars twinkling overhead, Kai couldn't help but feel that this journey was about more than reaching Solaris. It was about discovering his own potential and building bonds that might just last a lifetime.
[Magnus has joined the party permanently]
[Objective: Reach Elderglen by noon tomorrow]
The road to Solaris was fraught with unknowns, but with Lancelot's guidance and Magnus at his side, Kai was ready to face whatever challenges came their way. The true essence of adventure, he realized, wasn't just in the battles fought or the destinations reached, but in the friendships forged along the way. The journey continued, each mile a step towards destiny.
