Hearing Indra's words, Black Widow fired a few more shots out the window, then climbed back into the car, trying the steering wheel. It was indeed unresponsive!
The car was still speeding along uncontrollably. If this continued, they were sure to crash and die inside.
"Quick, hit the brakes!" Black Widow shouted.
Indra quickly stomped on the brake pedal, but to his dismay, nothing happened. "It must be from the impact earlier. The brakes aren't working either," he said helplessly.
Black Widow's voice was icy. "Didn't you say you had good luck?"
Indra, furrowed his brow. What the hell? Wasn't his luck supposed to be foolproof? How could the steering and brakes fail now, of all times? Couldn't they have failed after he got out of the car?
System, are you trying to screw me over?
"Jump out!" Black Widow's voice snapped him back to reality.
Jump out? At this speed, jumping out would be certain death!
"If we don't jump, we'll die in this car," she said, her tone flat and urgent.
Indra knew she was right, but she wasn't an ordinary person. He was. If he jumped, he was certain he would die. What the hell should he do?
"What are you hesitating for?" Black Widow's voice was impatient now.
The black-clad pursuers had caught up, and Black Widow fired a few more shots out the window, hitting one of them. The car spun out of control and crashed into the roadside with a loud explosion.
Indra took a deep breath. Had his luck run out?
"Ding, the system detects the host's luck is still at 100%. No need to worry," the mechanical voice reassured him.
Indra frowned. How could this still be 100%?
"Ding, please trust the system. It's a reliable system!" Indra exhaled in relief.
"Jump out!" Black Widow ordered again, her voice colder this time.
Indra shook his head and let go of the wheel. "Let's leave it to Lady Luck."
"I told you, luck can run out," Black Widow snapped, clearly losing her temper.
Yet Indra remained seated, unmoved. Black Widow frowned. This guy must be insane. Did he really believe fate would drive the car for him? A few strokes of good luck, and now he thought it would last forever?
She wasn't sticking around to die. Just as she was about to open the door and jump, a bullet whizzed into the car. More shots followed, but none hit their mark.
Black Widow's expression grew stern. It seemed their pursuers were poor marksmen. She coldly fired back, killing the driver of the nearest car with a single shot.
"That's what I call marksmanship," she thought with a smirk.
"If you want to die, I won't stop you," she said coldly to Indra, reaching for the door handle.
In her peripheral vision, she saw the car she had just shot lose control and veer towards them. The collision spun their car 90 degrees to the right, directly towards the S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters.
Black Widow was stunned. But what shocked her even more was that their speeding car suddenly slowed down and glided to a smooth stop right in front of the S.H.I.E.L.D. building.
She turned to Indra, who was sitting calmly, and thought to herself, "Unbelievable."
Black Widow stepped out of the car and surveyed her surroundings. The vehicle was severely damaged from the collision, and most of the fuel had leaked out. It seemed the car had stopped because it had run out of gas.
She frowned.
If previous incidents could be chalked up to Indra's luck, what about this time? Winning at cards could be explained by cheating. Knowing the lock code might be attributed to prior knowledge. The bullets missing him could be due to poor marksmanship. But what about just now? One or two coincidences might be excusable, but repeated occurrences turned coincidence into fact.
Black Widow, who had originally brought Indra along out of suspicion, now found herself beginning to believe him. She smiled suddenly and walked towards him.
"What's your name?" she asked.
Indra, frowning as he watched her approach, answered, "Indra."
Black Widow smiled and softly repeated his name. At that moment, a raspy voice interrupted, "Sorry, but I think I should step in."
Indra turned to see a tall Black man with an eye patch approaching, accompanied by another man with a bow strapped to his back. If Indra wasn't mistaken, the man with the eye patch was Nick Fury, the legendary agent, and the other man was Hawkeye.
Nick Fury stopped in front of Indra and teased Black Widow, "I heard you lost five million dollars in a bet?"
Black Widow shook her head with a resigned smile, clearly not wanting to discuss it further.
Fury chuckled and looked at Indra. "So, are you here to collect the debt?"
By now, it was late, and most of the lights in the S.H.I.E.L.D. building were off, save for a dim patrol light. Indra found it hard to make out Fury's features clearly, but Fury's grin, revealing his bright teeth, caught his attention.
"Actually, you could say that, Director Fury," Indra nodded.
Fury's expression showed a flicker of surprise; he hadn't expected Indra to know his name. Through S.H.I.E.L.D.'s surveillance and communications, Fury had already learned about Indra's involvement and was keen to meet the man who had managed to beat Black Widow at her own game.
"You might not know this, but the last time I won money from her, I got beaten up for it," Fury said, placing a hand on Indra's shoulder as they walked. "I'm curious why you managed to win her money and didn't get a beating."
Black Widow, hearing Fury's joke, added, "I wouldn't be stupid enough to hit my boss. Otherwise, I might not get paid. But clearly, I didn't care about that last time, so I did hit him."
Fury laughed and turned back to Indra. "Lucky guy, I like you. Why don't you consider spending the night here?"
As soon as Fury finished speaking, Hawkeye commented dryly, "S.H.I.E.L.D. might need to start cutting costs since the mission budget is gone."
Black Widow shot Hawkeye a displeased look. Fury quipped, "Sure, let's start by cutting your salary."
Hawkeye fell silent, but his expression conveyed his disapproval of Indra.
Fury concluded, "It's settled then. You'll stay here tonight."
Indra frowned. Having just arrived in this world, he didn't have a familiar place to stay. A free place to sleep sounded good, especially since Black Widow still owed him five million dollars. No matter how good-looking she was, a debt was a debt.
