Chapter 28 - T City: Loser and useless

"I know, I know, I am not a moron to use my blessing when someone like her is present here—Uggh."

I felt as if I was being stared at, so I looked in that direction, and it was the same man that those humans were after.

Whatever.

I shifted my focus to the cake known as 'tomato soup cake', as Tsurumi called it.

"...Sigh, why today of all days? Do you not see that they are armed, idiot? Leave guns, didn't you see what she did to one of my workers?

Is he talking to me? Nah. But he's looking in my direction maybe—it's sour!.

Not only that, but those humans in the masks made it very clear that they did not want anything from us and were only here for you, so why should anyone else be afraid?

"Stop this chitchat, you know what we're here for"

"Nom, nom"

"You want that piece of junk, right?"

"All right, so how about you give it to us and we will not kill you in return?"

"How about if I give you that relic in exchange for you not killing anyone else in this place? Do you even realize how difficult it is to start a legal business?"

The man spoke without showing any fear, and he seemed to be glancing toward me.

"Nom, nom"

Whoa, it is exactly like that scene from the movie we just saw—so sour!

"Ok, you listened to him; no more killing simply because you dislike someone's face. Unless, of course, they attempt something foolish."

He stated, turning to face the masked woman who was seated in the front row.

"Yeah, yeah"

"Fellow customers, everything will be alright in a few minutes, so please do not try to do anything illogical."

Once more, he glared at me while speaking.

What's the issue with him?

"Move!"

While the two men in masks followed the man and went to one of the doors, pointing the gun at him, the woman in masks simply sat there.

The store went silent, and everyone inside was still hiding behind tables. Rika, who had tears in her eyes, was still clutching my shirt and attempting to push me down.

"Please, get down."

With a look of impending tears on her face, Rika muttered in a low voice.

Why is she so emotional all the time?

I once more concentrated on eating cakes because nothing else was happening. I considered eating them faster so I could curl up inside the table with them because I despised watching someone cry in front of me.

The masked woman stood up from her seat and approached me, but I ignored her and continued eating.

"Eek!"

"Hey, move. I want this seat."

"Nom, nom, gulp. What, why? Can't you take another chair? Almost all of the seats here are empty."

"He has a death wish, or something."

I heard a mutter from inside the table, and the voice sounded like Myoga's.

"Hmm, yes, they are."

She turned to face the empty chairs that were positioned close to the table.

*Creak*

She selected the chair on the opposite side of the table, pushed it in close to mine, and took a seat there.

"Nom, nom"

"You don't seem to be scared of me? Did you not see what I did to that guy?"

She spoke as she moved closer to me, slanting her head to look directly into my face.

Well, it will take a lot more to frighten me.

"I did. I am so scared that I feel like finishing these cakes."

"Hmm, but your face indicates otherwise."

"I think, I look pretty scared. Perhaps you hit your head or something, making it difficult for you to read faces."

"Well, I guess I did fall off my bed yesterday now that I think about it."

She moved her fingers to her chin, making an expression that suggested she was thinking deeply.

"Nom, nom"

Wait, she believed it? Maybe I am getting better at human lying, or maybe she is just dumb.

"You thought I was dumb."

Without changing the gesture she was making, she turned her gaze in my direction.

"Nope."

"Oh."

She was not saying anything for a while, and then the whole bakery was silent again, with the exception of a few humans low, quiet prayers.

"Why aren't you scared of me? You are aware that I can end your life in the blink of an eye."

"But I am afraid. You want me to prove to you that I am afraid by screaming like everyone else did a moment ago. Also, please don't kill me because it hurts and I dislike pain."

"...You're right, dying hurts, and the few minutes when all the terrible things that have happened to you in the past resurface and haunt you only add to the misery."

Her delivery of that statement caught my interest, and I considered enquiring further.

"Give that cake to me."

"What? No, go buy one for yourself."

"I'm in a bad mood,"

"What does your mood have to do with your request for the cake?"

"Look around you, sh*thead!"

She got up from the table and shouted. I saw that she had an angry expression on her face.

Everyone in the bakery became more terrified upon witnessing her yelling, and Rika's hold on my t-shirt tightened.

"This is what happens when I'm in a bad mood. This is my final warning; if you don't give me a bite, you won't have any mouth left to eat."

Did I piss her off? It appears that I would have to sacrifice one of them after all.

I handed her the "tomato soup cake," which I had only partially consumed. She took her seat once more and began to eat the cake.

"Nom, nom"

Though her face was hidden by the black mask, she was able to eat the cake without trying to take it off because there were gaps around her mouth, nose, and eyes.

"You got angry really quickly."

"Nah, it was only a scare tactic. Well, it's true that I am in a bad mood, and the last part about you not having a mouth"

"..."

She cast a glance at me, noticing that I was not saying anything.

"You see, the people who were taking care of me did something that made me angry, so I destroyed their entire house."

Were? Perhaps they abandoned her. If you take away someone else's hard-earned possessions, like you took my cake, then everyone will leave, including me.

"While they were in—it's sour!"

"Oh"

So here's my last cake. I enjoyed every cake I tried, with the exception of the 'tomato soup' cake that I gave her.

I bit into it, and once more, it left wonderful flavors in my mouth.

"What's your name?"

"Loser—that is what everyone calls me."

I replied, keeping my face averted and my attention solely on the cake's flavors.

"Nom, nom. And what's yours?"

"Useless"

"Nice name."

"Thanks"

Afterwards, she ceased her conversation, got up from her place at the table, and went over to the table across from us to collect the two plates of cakes that were left there. And with that, she came back and sat down in her chair.

Gazing out the windows on the entrance wall, I saw, off in the distance, some vehicles and humans dressed in recognizable uniforms.

"Here"

She handed me a plate with a partially consumed cake on it.

Is she giving it to me?

"You mentioned that you feel like eating cakes when you are scared."

"Yes, I do."

Why does it seem like we would get along well?

Demons prefer to live alone, and as one myself, I enjoyed being alone; however, there are times when I do not mind getting along with someone, and she felt like she was one of them.

"Hehe"

"what's with that laugh, Loser"

"Nothing, just that this cake looks delicious."

"It does."

Following our conversation, we each took a bite out of the partially consumed cake she had brought from the other table.

"Wow, it tastes really good. What is the name of this cake?"

"I dont know? How about we ask someone who knows? I am also interested in knowing what it's called."

I turned to face Rika, but she seemed incapable of engaging in conversation, so I decided not to ask.

"Hey you, come here."

She spoke while looking at a nearby waiter.

The waiter then approached us, his legs trembling, possibly because of her.

"Y-yes"

"What's the name of this cake?"

" it's 'Mint cho-chocolate'."

"Mint chocolate, huh? Okay, you can go now."

"O-ok"

Turning around, that waiter began to back away from us. I focused on the masked woman's left hand because it felt like she had something in her palm and was crushing it with her fingers.

"K-kuek."

I turned to face the server, whose body began to deform and explode, exactly like it had the first time, except this time there was nothing left.

The blood splattered everywhere, including our cakes.

"Eeeek!"

Once more, terrified sounds began to emerge as they realized what had transpired.

"Kukuku."

The woman in the mask got up from her chair and pressed her face against mine until our foreheads were in contact.

"What about now?"

"Was that your laugh? I really liked it."

"Huh. Yeah, I do like the way I laugh."

She turned her face away from me and returned to her seat.

Why did she do that? Human laws do not allow people to kill one another, right?

"Why did you do that? Didn't those other guys in masks warn you that if you kill someone again, you would not get paid?"

"It's okay, they'll pay me, or I will take it myself. Also, you remembered that."

"You wasted the cake, too."

"Oh. We can—"

"Hey, time to leave. Why didn't you notify us about the police?"

The other man and those two with the masks returned. One of the men wearing a mask had an odd object in his hand.

After glancing out the window, she asked, " when did they arrive? Moreover, you wasted a lot of my time by taking so long."

"This guy has built an entire factory in his basement."

"We can have this conversation somewhere else. If those government hunters show up, it won't be easy for us to leave."

"Kukuku, there is only one thing left."

She turned to face me, and perhaps because of the way her eyes were wide open and the way she smiled, I thought she was going to beat me.
