Chapter 5 - She Meets the Criteria

"If she meets the criteria, then you can consider your debts settled."

"I'm pretty confident she does. You can see for yourself. She's young and hasn't been involved in anything…, you know."

"She appears beautiful and innocent, but you can never be too sure about young girls… I hope she does meet his requirements. It would be quite beneficial. You understand what's at stake if she doesn't," Meredith listened as her uncle and the Nun discussed her as if she weren't even in the room. From her uncle's nervousness, she sensed he was afraid of something or someone.

"I'm confused about what's happening here or why I was awakened from my sleep to meet her. I don't know who she is, uncle. I don't understand why she's here looking for me or why you summoned me so late at night. Could you please talk to me as if I'm right here, in front of both of you?" Meredith said, trying to control her growing anger.

What were they talking about regarding her beauty and her meeting someone's requirement? She wanted to go back to sleep and prepare for her upcoming job or, better yet, go back home. Where was her phone? This would be the perfect time to call Zara. Something unsettling was happening right there.

"Don't worry, my dear… she's your connection to a job. I specifically asked her to come and meet you, meet Sister Margaret."

Meredith simply rolled her eyes as she looked at the Nun, whose nails were painted and who had a hint of something sinister in her eyes, something only she could see.

"I appreciate your effort in finding me a job, but what does it have to do with a nun and this strange meeting at this hour? I don't know, but I don't feel comfortable about it."

As those words left her lips, fear tightened its grip on her, as she recalled her sister's warnings about not trusting their uncle. What if he was a dangerous person? What did she really know about him, and why was he so eager to assist her?

"You have nothing to worry about. You can trust Sister Margaret; she will take good care of you," her uncle reassured her.

"Take care of me in what way? I don't understand," she suddenly stood up from the chair where she had been sitting. "What is all this about? Why did you ask my mom to send me down here?"

With a clearer view of her uncle and the nun, she noticed the nun's gaze fixed on her chest. She immediately covered herself with her plain night jacket.

"I can see she's innocent. You've done well. She'll be perfect for the home after we've conducted our tests on her, of course," the nun said, smiling at her uncle.

Something felt deeply unsettling about the whole conversation, and she needed to find a way to escape from them and lock herself in her room. It felt as if they were planning to sell her off. Why would her uncle be involved in such a scheme? She needed to act quickly, either by running out to raise an alarm or locking herself inside.

Before she could make a move, her uncle was already behind her, guiding her by the shoulder toward the nun.

"You'll be alright, trust me," he assured her.

As he spoke, the nun retrieved a syringe from her long robe and slowly approached Meredith.

"Please! Don't do this! No!" she screamed, not knowing what they were about to do to her. The last thing she remembered after the nurse injected her with the syringe was the sinister smile on the nun's face. Then everything went black.

Uncle Gibs and the nun quickly bundled Meredith and placed her in the back of the nun's car before his wife returned home. He felt a pang of guilt as he observed the girl's unconscious form in the car's rear, but he believed it was for his own good.

"If she's just what we're looking for, trust me, your debt will be settled. I'll put in a good word for you. And remember what to say if anyone asks about her disappearance," he nodded in response to her question, and she smiled seductively before closing her door and driving off toward Meredith's uncertain new life.

Meredith's eyes fluttered open, and she found herself lying on a comfortable bed in a beautifully furnished room. At first, she thought she had returned to her uncle's home, but as the memories of the previous night slowly resurfaced, panic began to well up inside her. She struggled to sit up, trying to make sense of her surroundings.

As she glanced around the room, she noticed a group of glamorous girls going about their business. Some were scrolling through their phones, others were folding clothes, and a few were getting their makeup done. They were all dressed in revealing outfits, and Meredith instinctively knew this wasn't where she belonged. At the far end of the room, a girl sobbed quietly, but her cries were abruptly hushed when another girl, sharpening a knife, approached and sat close to her. There was something unsettling about the girl who continued to strike the knife against its blade while locking eyes with the sobbing girl. She was dressed completely in black, her nails painted black with a black lipstick painted on her lips. At one point, she even ran her fingers along the sharp edge of the knife, slicing her own skin without flinching. And she licked her bleeding fingers if she were savoring the taste of her own blood. This sight sent Meredith into a deeper panic.

She had to escape this place! Rushing to the door, she began banging on the iron door, desperately pleading, "Let me out of here! Please! I don't belong here!" Her cries fell on deaf ears; not even the other girls in the room paid her any attention. They carried on with their activities as though they were robotic, programmed to remain unfazed.

"Let me out! Please! Please!" she screamed even louder, and someone from behind snapped, "Enough! I don't want to hear one word from you."

Unknown to Meredith, it was the same girl who had been sharpening the knife that had issued the command. She continued her wailing, unwilling to stop her plea just because of some girl who seemed content with being locked. Meredith continued to pound on the door, unaware that the girl who had silenced her was now approaching her quietly. If no one could help her in here, someone outside would definitely hear her screaming and banging, she hoped.

Niki took one step and two steps closer to Meredith. The room fell silent as the other girls held their breath, knowing that Niki was about to scar yet another girl. However, they couldn't warn Meredith because Niki would come after them.

"I told you to be quiet, didn't I?" the angry girl yelled as she grabbed Meredith by her braided hair and dragged her across the cold marble floor. Meredith screamed, struggling to break free, but Niki brandished her knife, ready to carve a mark on her face, her lips curled in a sinister smile.

Just as Niki was about to carry out her threat, the door suddenly burst open. "Niki! Don't!" came the familiar voice of the nun who had brought Meredith to this mysterious place.

Meredith's mind raced with questions. What kind of place was this? She silently cried out as Niki continued to grip her hair tightly, the knife still menacingly in her hand. At any moment, it would tear her beautiful skin, she cried.
