"By the way, you might want to try and get a promotion at your work."
Evelyn smelled the trap from miles away. She truly did, as it was not her first day knowing Daemon, despite the changes he seemed to be presenting. But despite that, she couldn't prevent herself from stopping and turning to him, as she asked in doubts:
"Why?"
"You were right when you said that your salary is not enough to reimburse me, not with all your other expenses. That means even without adding any interest, the debt will accumulate as I keep paying for Jason's expenses year after year. So you might never do away from your status as a debtor. Unless you get a promotion and a raise."
Evelyn descended into silence when she heard that, looking at the smile that felt devious to her. She took a deep breath, then said with her chest heaving:
"Damien, I take back what I said once again. You have changed. You have become worse."
