Emma was escorted into the police car and driven straight to the police station.
"Please, I swear I did no such thing." Emma begged in the car.
The officers sneered.
"Did no such what? Drive under the influence? Driving without a license? Casually endangering the lives of innocent citizens? Ruining public property? Ooh! Or do you mean, playing an active role in the murder of a biker on vacation?"
Emma took a moment to process it.
"Yes!"
"And we are supposed to believe that?"
"Is that so hard?"
"Baby girl, we might not have had a good footage of you driving the car, but we do have that of the accident. And we also have a clear footage of you driving the broken car to the hospital and then running out before the victim's parents could come in."
"Officers, I promise there's an absolutely reasonable explanation for all of that." Emma tried to explain.
"Save it for the judge. And whoever is unfortunate enough to be your attorney."
They threw her in jail as soon as they arrived at the station. No words were said to her. She was put in with two teenagers. They sat opposite one another quietly. Emma had the feeling they had intentionally put her there for show.
"It's a publicity stunt." One of the teenagers explained. She had fluffy, green, punk hair and a variety of tattoos covering her arms. She had a nose ring, dark-themed make-up, and chewed gum like a maniac but had a very calm voice. Not rough and threatening like she expected.
"The point is to parade you without making seem like they are. The law says you have a right to a public attorney in the absence of a personal one. And you are supposed to be interrogated within your first twenty-four hours." The punk haired teenager paused. "Or is it forty-eight? I don't really remember."
She waved it off that way. Emma nodded.
"Anyway, the main idea is that you won't be given quick access to these rights. They will delay it until the last hour or two. Until then, they will let you stay here where you won't be seen as an adult criminal. This place is only meant for those that have some chance and the right to be bailed out."
Emma stared at her, doing a bad job of hiding her curiosity.
"How do you know that I am not just waiting to be bailed?"
"If you were bail-able, they would have removed your cuffs the second you entered. You are still in it. They are intentionally making things uncomfortable for you. Not to mention, the only people I've seen those two hunks bring in are Sully and Prawn. They both are in prison right now."
Emma sighed. Another evidence she was doomed. She fell on her side on the bench and managed to fall asleep even though her hands were still cuffed behind her back.
By the time she woke up, the sun was well out, and a plethora of cameramen had their cameras out. They took pictures after pictures, clicking without stop. Their cameras flashed without pause, blinding her monetarily.
She covered her eyes with her hand and the clicks and flashes increased in frequency. What she did not realize was that her harmless attempt at hiding her face, had only made her look more guilty. And that was good for the cameras.
"Alright, that's enough. You've taken enough pictures." One of the women officers said. She moved forward and ushered them backwards until they were all out of the station.
Emma was grateful that the flashes of the camera had stopped. She noticed that she was the only one left in the holding cell. She had no time to reason where her companions of yesterday were.
"Phew! Well, it's a good thing you finally woke up. Are you ready to be drilled till you spill all your life secrets?" She asked Emma, smiling as if she was telling a joke.
Emma felt cold shivers run down her spine. That smile held a mighty lot of evil intentions in her. She panicked. Was she going to be tortured?
Her skin went cold. The little, almost non-existent hair on her skin stood on its end. Like an electrocuted cat. She needed help. And she needed it fast. Her mind went into instant overdrive. She thought of all the people she could call. Absolutely zero. She knew no one. For the first time, she detested her lone-wolf life.
"I am..." She did not finish her sentence. Hold on. Did she not have a rich uncle whose daughter's life she saved just yesterday? Even if he was not going to agree to the fact that it was Carolina that dove the car that killed had a man, he should be able to provide her a good lawyer who would do their very best to save her from life in prison. He owed her that much at the very least, didn't he?
The smiling female officer opened the door and gestured for Emma to come out.
Emma shrunk back.
"Wait!" She nearly screamed. "Let me make a phone call. I'm allowed to make a phone call, aren't I?"
The officer's smile widened. She looked at Emma as if she was looking at a cute little girl throwing a tantrum.
"And who, if I might ask, do you intend to call?" She asked, although she had a good guess who that person was.
"My uncle. William Taylor." Emma replied with a smirk. This was the first time she would ever boldly and somewhat proudly mention her wicked uncle's name.
The female officer's slowly opened wide. Then, she began to chuckle and every police officer begsnto laugh as well. Within seconds, the whole station was reverberating in laughter.
"Wh… what is… what is going on? What is so funny?" There could not have been a more confusing expression on Emma's face. She felt stupid and left out at the same time. What was happening?
"Oh baby girl." One of the officers that arrested her yesterday, finally responded. "Just an hour before you woke up, your uncle William Taylor was here to file a theft and kidnap case against you. Apparently, you were being a spoiled, rebellious brat and were trying to prove a point, but they were obviously you responsible for you to sway and so, you stole a car, invited poor Caroline out, got drunk together and ran into the pole that turned the sole heir of a multi-billion company into mashed potatoes."
Emma's mouth opened wide. She closed it and swallowed hard. She sighed as tears streamed down her face.
"I'm screwed!"
The female officer added without remorse
"Very!"
