Sebastian already knew Winter wouldn't believe his claim, even though he was telling the truth.

He had always been popular, both in high school and university. He was athletic, good-looking, and extremely intelligent. 

His mother raised him with an iron hand. She would beat him up if he didn't get an A or A+ in all his subjects in school.

She would also berate Sebastian if he lost in any competition, whether that competition was the ones Sebastian wanted to join or not. 

Sebastian remembered how Camilla slapped him and didn't give him any food for the whole day just because he got a B+ on a math test in primary school.

So he spent the rest of the night studying while being starved. 

He also remembered how he cried because of the hunger and the swelling on his cheek. But in the end, he toughened up, trying his best not to cry because it would give him puffy eyes that would make his mother angrier.
