"How did all this happen?" Yong Wu received the news from Cheng Wei's driver that the big boss was in the hospital with his wife—urging the lawyer to abandon his post-breakfast sleep and arrive at the hospital right away.
After he enquired a little, Yong Wu discerned that it was Xiao Mei's best friend who was admitted to the hospital because of severe injuries she faced from some anonymous assaulter.
"It seems Wang Lin went to Zhang Yulan's cafe last night and harassed her." Cheng Wei responded without moving his eyes away from the food he was serving on the plates himself.
He ordered breakfast from the nearby restaurant since after inspection Cheng Wei found the kitchen of the hospital to be not well-maintained.
"Why did that stingy boy hit Xiao Mei's friend? Were they having their secret affair or something?"
Cheng Wei coldly replied, "Do you hit your partner in a relationship?"
Yong Wu was taken aback because the way Cheng Wei took his statement was completely off-mark.
"I didn't mean it that way. I mean, maybe Wang Lin has some sort of mental illness and he vented on Zhang Yulan?"
Cheng Wei shook his head and picked the tray from the shelf.
Walking toward the elevator he answered, "It's not that simple. Wang Lin is a messed up person who needs to be reminded of his worth."
Yong Wu nearly froze at his place hearing such a condensed tone from his friend.
He hadn't seen Cheng Wei this agitated before, despite how calm the man outwardly seemed.
The last time Cheng Wei felt annoyed by something, three major companies went bankrupt in a single night. Now this time, it seems, the person named Wang Lin was set as his target.
'By the grace of God, I wish you a good time in the afterlife...' Yong Wu inwardly muttered and followed Cheng Wei.
*******
Xiao Mei was sitting in the lobby just opposite the room where Zhang Yulan was getting treated.
The whole floor was empty. However, she wasn't in her correct mind to notice it.
There were several things rummaging in her mind. Zhang Yulan was the only friend of Xiao Mei who never abandoned her, despite how Xiao Mei used to treat her. She never expected anything from Xiao Mei nor she showed any annoyance when Xiao Mei suddenly decided to patch up.
Zhang Yulan has always been there for Xiao Mei. Xiao Mei used to share her grief about being married to a man she didn't even know. Xiao Mei always vented her frustration and complained about how she was sold off by her family.
All Xiao Mei could remember of their conversations, then it mostly revolved around Xiao Mei and her problems.
And because of those problems, her friend suffered.
'Wang Lin...' The hatred she felt upon muttering that name brought moisture to her eyes. She wanted nothing more than to destroy Wang Lin for what he has done.
"Xiao Mei."
"Ah..." Suddenly, her stupor was broken by a familiar voice as she turned to look at her left.
There stood the man, who always brought peace to her heart.
Xiao Mei stood on her feet and glanced at the food tray he was holding. It had some cereals and fruits.
"You haven't eaten anything since morning."
Xiao Mei was far from being hungry. She has lost all her appetite to the point where she feels slightly nauseous to see the food.
...however, rejecting such a gentleman made her heart wrench—urging her to take hold of the tray and thank him.
Xiao Mei sat back down and invited Cheng Wei to accompany her.
Cheng Wei was about to leave one seat between them when suddenly Xiao Mei insisted, "Please sit here. I might end up crying again, so I will need a shoulder to lean on."
Although he knew she was joking about it, Cheng Wei couldn't help but feel a sense of elation in his heart. The sensation of having his wife rely on him, was quite elevating for him.
Cheng Wei sat beside her as Xiao Mei slowly picked a strawberry and bit a portion of it with her front teeth.
The gesture was extremely adorable in his eyes as Cheng Wei kept his eyes on the small and cute Xiao Mei.
"---!" Suddenly, Xiao Mei noticed his gaze and that thin smile his lips had curved into, which turned the shade of her cheeks into the same color as the strawberry.
"Mr. Cheng...it's not appropriate to watch a lady eat." Although Xiao Mei has become a lady recently, she felt extremely embarrassed to be seen like this.
Cheng Wei removed his eyes from her but his grin never subdued, only to feel a pinch on his wrist.
"That's what you get for making fun of me." In the past, he would have thought that she was actually mad at him, but now, seeing that pout and remembering the conversation they recently had, Cheng Wei knew that she was just being embarrassed.
Xiao Mei was now feeling a little better as she scooped some porridge and tasted it.
"Hmm...it's quite good." The compliment arrived just a moment before she held a spoonful of porridge in Cheng Wei's direction and asked him, "You have to try this."
Cheng Wei looked blankly at the offered spoon and Xiao Mei alternatively.
This wasn't the first time she was offering him the same food she was eating but still, he couldn't believe his eyes that the same Xiao Mei who doesn't even like to share the same dining table in the past was now actually offering him food like this?
Dumbly, he lowered his lips and tasted the porridge.
"...it's good."
Seeing the frown on his face, Xiao Mei wanted to chuckle. She recently discovered that whenever Cheng Wei wants to hide his real emotions, he makes that face.
However, it seems he was quite embarrassed at the moment since his brows were slightly twitching as well.
"Here, another one." She offered him some porridge again, and as an obedient husband, Cheng Wei took it.
Xiao Mei was now enjoying his reaction more than the food. She ate one or two spoonfuls and fed him some in between. His twitching brows are so adorable to stop.
It was then when suddenly a third person's voice startled Xiao Mei,
"Aren't you guys showing off a lot?"
Cheng Wei glared at his friend whom he told to leave previously.
Yong Wu instantly raised his hands and confessed the reason for interfering, "Someone came finding Zhang Yulan but the doctors aren't letting them in."
Cheng Wei turned his attention toward Xiao Mei.
For some reason, Xiao Mei's face turned pale, as she said,
"It must be her mother."
