Chapter 10 - What Is Wrong With Me?!

Work was pretty normal when it came to the job of being a music producer but everyone stared at me today more than when I first came on the scene. I was getting glances and some even made noises of affection or attraction towards me. Whispers started to spread around like it was highschool all over again. Only this time I've made the staring role instead of a background character. I've always been the one hiding in the shadows but now me and the shadows are center stage. I found myself kind of liking it too. The smiles, both envious behind fake teeth and genuine appreciation of me being who I am, and the complements that give off the same energy. It's like they used to say. All publicity is good publicity, and I aim to reel in every bit of it as fuel for the fire today. The attention I got that would no doubt reach Jayda's ears accompanied with the visuals when we finally meet up will have to make Jayda jealous that she hasn't locked me down yet. As each day comes and goes I've become more determined to make her believe that she wants me more than anyone else in her life. With a smile on my face and determination in my eyes I walked over to my station and sat down feeling excited for this evenings shopping trip.

As I began to get all my things out of my bag for this new track I was working on for Johnny Brittany stood at her cubical and stared at me for a bit so I looked up and smiles at her. "You… uhm… like what I'm wearing?"

"Yeah girl!" She said chuckled. "What made you wear this?"

"I'm going out after work today and I wouldn't have enough time to go home and change so I decided to come here ready."

Brittany whistled and sat down smiling. "Who's the lucky person?"

"Well I wish I could say it was something that special but it's just a show casing of my best outfit and makeup to show Ms. Sparks what she has to work with when we go shopping for my outfit for the swanky event I've been invited to."

"Oh you mean that large event that the company puts on for it's top contributors."

"Yup that's the one. It's usually not my scene but I felt like it would be best to show up and support those that I've helped make the top spot."

"You're so sweet sometimes."

"I honestly try my best but sometimes it gets a bit unsure if I succeed or not."

"Well I think you've achieved it this time."

I smiled at her, feeling validated in my attempt to be an alluring woman today, I put my head phones on and tried to finish the track for Jason. I was nearly done when the reminder I set on my calendar I had linked to the computer at my cubicle went off letting me know it was time for a lunch break. I took my headset off and gathered my purse and phone as I headed to the elevator to go down towards the cafeteria. Pressing the down arrow button I checked my phone as I waited for it to arrive to see I had a message from Jayda asking me to come to her office whenever I had some free time. Smiling I texted her back letting her know I was on my way now and got into the elevator when it finally arrived. Pressing the top floor number button I waited to see if she'll message me back I rode the elevator up.

When I arrived to the top floor I exited the elevator and walked down the halls making those weird turns as I made my way towards the staircase that lead up to her personal floor. As I climbed the stair in my heels I quickly made a note to wear shoes while at work and to leave these baby's in my car until the end of my shift. Reaching door at the top after climbing three dozen steps I felt like I was going to lose my feet as I passed through the door and walked up to Sallie sitting behind her desk talking on the phone.

"Hey, Sallie, sorry to bother you. Jayda has asked me to meet her. Is it okay if I go in?"

Sallie asked the person on the other end to wait for a moment and put them on hold as she looked at me smiling. "Sorry, Lucy, but she's in there with someone right now. If you're willing to wait in one of those chairs I'll let her know you're here to speak with her."

I looked at the chairs she was pointing at behind me and turned my head back around smiling as I nodded. "Of course, thank you. Sorry to disturb you."

She politely dismissed my remark saying it was no issue as I headed towards the sets and sat down. Sallie started talking to the person over the phone again while I took my phone out of my purse again and sent Jayda a message telling her I'm sitting outside of her office. While I looked at the messages between us I had noticed my message's details said she hasn't looked at anything yet so I began wondering if she became busier at the moment that I contemplated on waiting to see her after work to ask her what she had wanted when the door to her office opened and Rebecca was walking out with annoyance written all over her face as she readjusts her clothes. At first it seemed Rebecca hadn't noticed me sitting in front of her until she took a second glance my direction and her face turned cocky as a smuged smile creeped along her lips. With a snobby scoff she tilted her Hollywood nose up at me and basically cat walked towards the stairs I had just come from. I was watching her go through the door into the stairway when I heard Jayda's voice calling my name. Turning my attention to her direction I saw her smiling at me as she stood there wearing this black and red dress. The colors were in a large wavey designe that was more like an ocean was turned virtually and had red and black waters pushing and pulling each other as they clashed. Needless to say I wanted that dress. Standing up I did my best to smile and forget the sight I saw as approached Ms. Sparks.

"Good afternoon, Ms. Sparks. How has the day been for you?" I asked holding back my feelings. I onow I'm probably just assuming things at this point but I can't help it. After that day I caught them in the elevator and Rebecca's annoyed face that turned into a smug when she was fixing her clothes when she left just started messing with my head, which started making my heart messy with negativity. As Jayda ushered me into her office and closed the door I turned around to face her and caught her looking at my butt before looking up meeting my eyes.

"So you wanted to see me?"

"Ah, that's right. I just wanted to talk to you during your break if possible. I'm happy to see you were able to make it."

"Oh yeah, I didn't get your message earlier because as soon as I got in I went straight to work. I was nearly done with Jason's track when I had to take my break."

"Wait, when you say 'nearly done', what exactly do you mean?" She asked and I could tell she was becoming worried about my productivity.

"Oh I got everything I need to complete the track after my break. Just got to clean up anything that's a bit static or wobbly. Once I get that done I'll be sending you and Jason the finished track to your emails like always."

"Ah, okay. I'm happy to hear it. I appreciate your diligence. Now how about we get back to the topic in hand?" She asked this while wrapping one arm around, placing it under her breasts as she held her other elbow while placing one finger on the side of her mouth as she smiled at me. I couldn't tell whether it was a smirk of wickedness or a spark of seductiveness. Either way I knew I was going to be in trouble.

"Sure, well I kind of already…." I began then she cut me off.

"Don't tell me you had already went out when we set a date today to go out and pick some clothes out." She looked me up and down with her eyes. "Is this what you got?"

"Excuse me?" I asked offended. "No, I wouldn't go out to buy things and come tell someone I disregarded our plans. Honestly, I'm offended that you would suggest I would do something like that. I also don't appreciate being cut off." When I finished talking I stood there stunned just staring at Jayda who's also quiet with her mouth open a little, probably just as shocked as I am. "I'm sorry…." I apologized below a whisper. "I didn't mean to lash out like that." Turning my head away waiting for her to start yelling at me for speaking so familiar and calling me rude and ungrateful.

"Um, Lucy honey, are you okay over there?"

To say my head snapped at her in complete confusion would be an understatement. My neck began to hurt so much after a loud pop was heard that I winced for a minute while I grabbed at my neck and squinted when I backed up a bit.

"What do you mean?"

"You seemed like you were on another verge of an emotional stress moment, I was beginning to get worried again. But what about your neck? You look like that was painful."

"Oh my neck's fine." I reassured as I began to rub out the not that was forming. "A good massage later on would help with that." I tried to offer another smile to hide my true feelings. I'm not sure if she's taking the bait to just accept my words or not but I am sure that I will be in a world of hurt if I don't start acting professional while at work. "Concerning my emotional breakdown though, I have it handled for now. I appreciate you're concern though, Ms. Sparks."

Still looking at me with concern I lowered my hand from my neck and folded it into my other hand in front of me as I smiled at her. "Well, it's almost time for me to get back to work but I hope our little outing after work today is still on." She looked at me shocked checking her watch, surprised that the time had flown by so suddenly.

"But you just got in here. Where'd the time go?" She asked sounding genuinely sad the time had slipped by.

"Well I was sitting for about ten minutes waiting for you to open your office door while you were meeting with Rebecca." I informed her trying to hold back the hint of jealousy trying to creep in. Unfortunately I think I failed because Jayda is now looking at me with eyes full of annoyance.

"Well, you aren't the only one here that works with me you know."

Looking down I nodded. "I know. So if you'll excuse me, I should get back to work. Thank you for speaking with me during our break." I turned around and began walking to her office door hoping she'd try and call me back or something to try and stop me but unfortunately for my heart I left her office thanking her assistant as I turned to go back to my floor and sit in my chair while my other coworkers talked amongst themselves. As I placed my headphones on I toned everyone out as I cleaned up the track and zoned out while I sent out the finished product to both Jason and Jayda.

When it came time to clock out I ended up getting so lost in my new project for the other artists tolhat I didn't even realize it was past time when I felt someone tapping my shoulder. When I took off my headphones and looked to see who it was I seen the face of the woman normally sweet filled with a bit of annoyance.

"So you're so caught up into work that you put in for unpaid overtime while ignoring your phone you've forgot to put on vibrate?" Brittany asked.

Looking down at my phone I see I've had several missed calls from both Jayda and Julie. Scurrying as I packed up my things and looked at Brittany. "I'm sorry Britt, please forgive me."

She giggled and placed her hands on my shoulders as I stood up. "Don't stress girl, just relax."

Taking a breath, I exhaled and recentered myself. Looking back up at Britt with a smile as I calmly picked up my things and held them. "Thanks, Brittany. I really needed a reminder. I need to go though. I'm very late for my meet up." With a quick hug and a single nod, Brittany walked back to her cubical as I left the floor and hurried to the front of the building hoping Jayda hasn't left.
