Chapter 2 - It must be broken!

Crack! Crack! Crack!

Outside of an abandoned building, pieces of bark could be seen flying off a tree. In front of the tree was a young man with dark brown hair throwing punch after punch at the tree, his knuckles were densely wrapped in tape as he threw one last punch.

Crack!

Veritas's chest rapidly rose and fell as he had a smirk on his face. Back at the orphanage, since he was never let outside, boxing was the only thing that let him release his pent up energy.

He looked at all the pieces of bark on the floor and turned around to head to the nearby river to wash himself off. After he was done he put on his janitor uniform that had no business being as fancy as it was.

Yesterday he went to Potentia Academy to pick up his uniform even though they offered to drop it off, Veritas denied as he didn't want to embarrass himself due to his living conditions.

It's fine once I get my first paycheck I can move out somewhere better, Veritas thought to himself. With that thought he started heading towards the academy.

The academy was different from normal schools in the area, not only because it's only students were champions, but because it was only a 2 year school for ages 16-18. Veritas would qualify to be a student there.

If he was a champion that is.

Champions only consisted of 6% of the population with roughly only 1% of them in each country. Veritas could only hope to go too such a school as measily janitor.

While being lost in thought he almost failed to notice he arrived in front of the gates of the academy.

The gates of the academy were as extravagant as they were huge and for good reason. The campus was almost equivalent to a small town, it had the boys and girls dorms on the left and right sides respectively. The main school was on the opposite side of the gate making these 3 buildings plus the gate make the outline of a square.

In the vast area between the buildings there was a number of cafes and shops. This setup made it so that there was no need to leave campus.

Veritas arrived in front of the main building without any traffic since the school year would not start for another 2 days. The only reason Veritas was here was because even though he passed the interview he still had two more rounds of exams he had to go through in order to start working.

First was the meeting with the headmaster and the second was test was to make sure he wasn't a hidden champion trying to infiltrate the school.

Veritas wasn't worried about the second test since he was sure he was as normal as they come, but the first test caused him to sweat as he navigated the halls and found himself outside the headmaster's room.

Veritas took a deep breath and stepped inside the room.

The room had bookshelves lined against both adjacent walls and at the end of the room was a finely carved wooden desk with papers, notebooks, and folders neatly arranged on it.

Beside the desk were two guards, their faces hidden under the visors of their helmets as Veritas walked in they didn't even react as though Veritas couldn't even hope to injure anyone in the room.

Sitting at the desk was man in his 50's he had light brown hair that was tied up into a ponytail that reached his waist. On his chin was a medium length beard of the same color. His face was hardened from countless battles as he looked at the visitor with intrigue.

"Ah Veritas it's nice to finally meet you, I'm Clive the headmaster at Potentia Academy" Clive said as he extended his for a handshake

Veritas naturally didn't refuse as he made sure his palms weren't sweaty from his nervousness he shook the headmasters firm hand, "It's an honor to meet you sir"

Of course, he had rehearsed that exact same line about a hundred times in the mirror.

Clive retracted his hand and thought for a moment "most of the questions have already been answered during the interview, however one thing still intrigues me"

"What is it?" Veritas could already see his future self begging on the streets for money

"It's your eyes, do you know of your heritage? Such an eye color is not native to this kingdom" Clive said as he stared at Veritas with intrigue

Veritas was taken aback before he calmed down and answered "as you probably know I come from an orphanage, but sadly I don't remember anything about my parents I've been there as long as I can remember"

"I see." Clive was seemingly satisfied with answer which made Vernitas calm down a little. "Well it's time for the mandatory testing to see if your a champion" Clive signaled to a man standing behind him

Upon seeing this Veritas's mood heightened considerably.

At this point I'm practically across the finish line!

The man stepped out from behind the desk, he was wearing a formal suit and tie with his dark purple hair slickbacked.

He pulled out an item from his pocket that looked like a black glove with a crystal orb attached to its palm

"It's a glove that can detect virtues" Clive explained "Once it detects a virtue the crystal ball will start flashing red but a normal person wouldn't cause any reaction"

"Just put it on and you will be ready to start working"

Veritas excitedly took the glove from purple haired man and put it on his left hand

I think I will move somewhere nearby the school so I can get to work faster, Veritas was already thinking about the future when his heart dropped.

The crystal orb on the ball began flashing red

In an instant the guards drew their long swords and aimed it at Veritas's neck and Clive's laidback look immediately turned solemn.

Veritas who was too shock to move, couldn't believe how bad his luck was

The blasted thing must have malfunctioned!
