Chapter 8 - The Forest Of Death

Rem's voice was thick as he said it and the ground below him glowed in a vibrant green, slowly but surely, A Death Wolf emerged from the ground.

Rem's eyes glowed as they locked with the Death Wolf, they were demanding... respect and the Wolf complied, bending it's fore legs forward and bowing.

"Let's get out of here," Rem said as he mounted the wolf, for some strange reason, It still had that same armor clasped around it's body.

Rem held tightly to the green fur of the wolf and the Death Wolf moved, it's body becoming blurry as they shot through the dirty road of the slums with unfathomable speed.

'It didn't have that kind of speed,' Rem thought, 'When we killed it,'

The speed of the Death Wolf wasn't like the way it was in the Dungeon, Rem noticed it when it had started running. Just mere minutes ago, they were sprinting in the Slums and mind you, the Slums was very large and now, they were in the Residential area.

Many people could not keep up with the way the Mayor kept inflating the prices of things and became poor, to keep a house in the residential area, You had to pay nothing less than 15 Silver coins per month... and there were 12 months in a year.

'The Higher-ups have always been greedy, They have enough yet they want more,' Rem thought as the wolf continued dashing, he felt his MP steadily draining but they were already in the Residential area, all Rem had to do was to pass the main gate and then he would leave.

'I wanted to join other Parties in the dungeons though,' Rem thought but quickly discarded the thought.

Onio Town had a GUILD of their own where Registered Magus and Cavaliers could become Parties, under the names 'Adventurers'. That was a title granted to people who had graduated from their respective Academies. And the ownership of dungeon gates in the Onio town was in the hands of the Onio GUILD.

Rem reached the gates quickly on the back of his mount, He had gotten used to this Summoning stuff, all he had to do was to say 'Rise' and think about what and how many Summons he wanted and if he had enough MP, He would be able to summon them.

If he didn't have enough MP, he would be able to summon a lesser amount of what he wanted.

The guards positioned held sharp Magic steel spears, the blades of said spears glistening in the night's sky. Rem patted the back of the Death Wolf and poured more MP into it, the armor glowed as it moved forward, faster than Rem could comprehend.

It passed by the guards and the open gates in a burst of speed and continued moving, Rem never looked back even once- He was finally done with that place and he would never go back.

"Ran away, huh?" Drew's voice bellowed and Rem was alarmed.

So alarmed that his MP cut off and the Mount vanished, left in mid-air and propelling forward with momentum, his face burrowed into the ground.

Drew couldn't help but laugh at the scene of the boy attempting to pull out his head from the ground.

As Rem's head finally came out, Drew was met with that emotionless face that he had seen in the dungeon.

"You want to take me back?" Rem asked.

He was surprised that the burly Cavalier was still in town but he didn't show it, he had long since learned to keep his feelings in check.

"Nah," Drew replied while leaning against a tree, Rem's eyes landed on his spiky black hair and deep piercing crimson eyes and the new Magic Iron sword that lay in it's sheath, just ready for battle.

"Where are you going from here?" Drew asked.

Rem shrugged, he didn't have anywhere to go neither did he have anyway to snag a map of the Country.

Drew laughed.

"How about coming with me then?" Drew suggested, "You can have full course meals, a nice bedroom and of course a library to engage in reading,"

"What's the catch?" Rem asked.

"I want you to be my apprentice," Drew replied and shrugged, "You really seem like you're going to make a good Cavalier, young and smart too,"

Rem thought on the suggestion, if he became Drew's apprentice, he could get access to a bedroom... a library to engage reading which he loved... and a bedroom, not one like his makeshift first floor bedroom.

"As my apprentice, you will be entitled to enter Dungeons not as a Bag carrier but as my apprentice," Drew said.

"What if I refuse?" Rem asked quite suddenly, Drew was taken aback.

"Hah, then you can just journey through the forest of death on your way to the next town," Drew replied, "If you survive, you'll surely have a tale to tell,"

"You won't leave a Kid stranded on his own in the forest, I'm sure you'll come in quite heroically," Rem shot back.

Drew was left aghast but Rem didn't give him a chance to say anything.

"Just so you know, I accept your offer and I shall become your apprentice, but if you treat me badly, I'll run away," Rem informed him and Drew nodded.

"Fair enough," He said and stopped leaning on the tree, "Well Kid, We're going through the Forest of Death so you better buckle yourself up,"

"I thought you would have some kind of way to get to the next town without going through the forest," Rem said and immediately questioned his apprenticeship.

"You mean those 'Transportation Magus', Sorry kid but they are too expensive for even a single use," Drew said and pulled out his Magic Iron Sword.

"Stop calling me Kid though, I have a name," Rem said.

"Heh, I'll call you kid until I deem you strong enough," Drew said and roughed up his hair affectionately.

#####

The Forest of Death was a large forest situated in between Onio Town and Eldo Town, it stretched over miles and was on constant supervision by GUILDS from both sides, Dungeon gates opened frequently here and therefore a large number of adventurers get dispatched here.

But that was not the reason for the name 'Forest Of Death', the forest was quipped that name because the Magical energy that was emitted from Dungeon gates affected the wild animals living here.

They became monsters of their own despite not having magical cores and there was a very high chance of death, not by the monsters in the dungeon but by the monsters that existed within this forest.

Drew however wasn't scared, an experienced adventurer could deal quick deaths to any monster that approached him / her in the forest and Drew was one of those experienced adventurers.

Rem was waiting for a battle to occur so he could get more souls.

'If they are not really monsters, Then will they give me more MP or will they give me special skills and stat build?' Rem thought.

He was game either way, while being Drew's apprentice, Rem was sure his stats would get strengthened but the same could not be said for magic- As he had no sure way to grow his MP, he could only rely on souls.

"Rem, step back," Drew said quickly as he drew out his Magic Iron Blade, "A monster is approaching,"
