Chapter 3 - System

A/n: I haven't drove a car as yet but I took the time to do my research, so if you any mistakes I made in the process just know that i only researched a small portion over the span of an hour or 2.>

...

Ethan exhaled deeply as he fastened his seat belt and placed his hand on the steering wheel to get a firm grasp of it. He then placed his right foot on the brake and his left foot on the clutch.

He turned the ignition key, which earned him a deep rumble from the V8. Ethan didn't do anything else at the moment; he needed to give the car some time to adjust to what it had not been doing for the past several years.

Hence, he let the engine run. And throughout all this, Ethan hadn't removed his left foot from the clutch.

Shifting his gaze upwards, Ethan glanced at the dashboard lights. Various numbers were displayed, and each one Ethan knew very well.

Having that settled, Ethan then shifted his focus to the gauges. Before he did anything else, he had to ensure that everything was alright on his side.

After having the engine run idle for some time, Ethan then shifted the gear lever into neutral into the middle position, although Ethan hadn't released the clutch as yet.

Ethan then brought his hands down before he eventually pressed a small button that was to his side. Ethan guessed that it was most likely the parking brake.

With that being set, Ethan then glanced around to ensure that no one was in his way. He then adjusted the mirrors to his liking and, yep, he'd also be cleaning that. It was dirty.

Having all that done, Ethan then shifted the gear lever into the first gear. His weight on the clutch was still there, although Ethan wasn't really that knowledgeable about actual cars; he'd at least done his research.

With pressure still on the clutch, Ethan gently released his hold of the brake while simultaneously applying some slight pressure onto the accelerator/gas pedal.

*Rvvv!*

A deep rumbling rev sound as the revs before the car eventually moved forward.

Seeing this, Ethan felt somewhat proud of himself, but he knew he wasn't done.

Slowly, he released his foothold off the clutch pedal while he gradually applied pressure onto the gas pedal.

The car pushed forward, and seeing this, Ethan felt even more proud, but he wouldn't let this get to his head, even though it was his first time driving.

'I guess it's about time we head to the supermarket,' Ethan thought as he made his way out into the eyes of the public.

Along the way, Ethan was laughed at, but in truth, he really didn't mind it since no one saw his face.

What's his was his, and he was definitely sure that most of them couldn't even have bought what he had.

*Rvvv!*

The Camaro made a deep rumble as Ethan made his way downtown to the cheapest store he knew of. Glancing at the speed monitor, he could see that he was actually going too fast. Still, it concerned him a bit.

These cars were indeed fast, but the problem lay with their weight; the drifting academy is a place that specializes in supernatural. However, drifting was just the main thing about all this.

Shaking his thoughts away, Ethan then placed his utmost focus on the road. He also made sure he was going under a speed of 30mph.

A few minutes passed, and at this moment, Ethan found himself in traffic.

*Beep! Beep!*

The sounds of the cars honking sounded throughout the traffic.

Anyway, since there was traffic that would most likely not let up any time soon, Ethan then decided to confront this system of his.

Systems weren't unbelievable, as most people from the drifting academy possess one. However, the system Ethan had just mentioned was different from the one he possessed.

'Beginners pack is it,' Ethan thought to himself.

Anyways, after struggling to actually touch the screen, a sudden system message has eventually guided him on what to do.

[Use your thoughts to command the system.]

Ethan gulped nervously, but this didn't mean that he wouldn't be keeping his eyes on the road.

Anyways, after using his thoughts, a mystery box popped up on the system's interface that swayed from size to size before a car burst out that flaunted some cash. It was indeed a weird animation, still Ethan didn't put much thought into it.

[You've unlocked The system storage. Would you like to open The beginners pack?]

"Open it," Ethan murmured in an audible tone.

[Congratulations. You have received 2 Slots.]

"Stat points? Titles? ...The heck," Ethan said to himself. The system origins and purpose were unclear, but for now, Ethan decided not to put too much thought into it.

"Forget it. I'll think of something later," Ethan said as he shook his head. Wanting to close the system interface, he thought of doing the exact thing, and it worked.

Seeing that he had succeeded, a sigh of relief escaped Ethan's lips as he shifted his gaze to the busy traffic before him.

Minutes passed, and the sound of impatient drivers accompanied Ethan. However, he didn't put too much thought into it since he already had his own thing to deal with.

"So let's go over the list again: 4 car seats, tires, gas, and food," Ethan said in an audible tone as he used his fingers to recount what he needed.

Having recounted what he needed, Ethan then turned his head upwards after almost all the traffic had finally loosened up a bit.

Ethan, seeing the opportunity, didn't wait for long. He followed the car before him. Anyway, Ethan knew it wouldn't be suitable to stay idle in such traffic. And he most definitely didn't want the people behind him honking; it was annoying and started to hurt his ears a bit. Regardless, Ethan bottled up this emotional moment of his.

Minutes went by, and by the time Ethan arrived at the mall, it was almost around 10:30. Regardless, it didn't matter much at this moment.

After finding a suitable place to park, Ethan then sprang into the mall. His hoodie was draped over his head to avoid the eyes of the bystanders who mocked him.

*Whispers* "Is that kid... why..."

Not wanting to hear other people's opinions of him, Ethan chose to ignore the outsiders.

Driving an older car doesn't mean it's necessarily slower; after all, the car market wasn't doing too well. And that held several reasons which Ethan didn't want to delve into for the time being.

Arriving inside the huge mall that was basically an all-in-one place, Ethan glanced at a few passersby.

Having satisfied his curiosity, Ethan then bought everything he'd be needing.

"Your balance is 2999.99," a man said in an audible tone as he packed all the items in a thick plastic bag.

Parting the lips of his wallet, Ethan forked out the funds needed for the items he had purchased.

Although Ethan felt a sense of loss, he knew it was nothing compared to the days of hunger.

After his parents abandoned him, Ethan found himself alone, alone inside a house that required him to pay bills, and those bills were anything but cheap.

Rent, light bill, water bill, food bill, school bill.

It was a sticky situation that reminded Ethan of the hardest moments in his life, and it's also what made him who he is as of now.

And as you'd have expected, such a thing called revenge came knocking on someone's door, but it wasn't Ethan's; rather, it was his parents'.

After buying the goods, Ethan then brought them back to his car.

Luckily, aside from the seats, it seems that the car dealerships did a great number on the car.

Minutes passed, and after finishing what he had to, Ethan then made his way home.

Now all he had to worry about was a relatively safe place to park his car, but for now at least he'd just put it elsewhere.

Yes, Ethan unfortunately didn't have time to think of this.

Block 42nd Street 31....

A deep rumbling sounded as a car slowly made it's way upto a familiar apartment.

The car having reached it destination finally came to a stop, the door that leaded to the driver's seat was then pushed open revealing a familiar face.

It was Ethan.

After settling himself inside his apartment Ethan then began to prepare a festive meal unfortunately this moment came to a stop when he heard his phone rang.

[Matthew what's up?]

{Ethan!! Oh thank goodness you've finally picked up, what the hell were you doing man do you know how long I've been calling}

[Ahhh...my bad I was preparing dinner ...]

Suddenly The sound of cars sounded through the phone filling Ethan's years with a sense of excitement.

'No I shouldn't go' he convinced himself

"By the way why did you have something you call about?"Ethan inquired.

{It's nothing much just wanted to ask if you still don't planning on coming tonight} Matthew said, his voice held a pang of reluctance.

[I'd rather not] Ethan said in an awkward tone.

Although he wanted to go he knew that this rah decision of his could cause him something valuable.

When there were races there very cops an those cops weren't just any normal cop they were individuals who went to the Drifter's academy and each possessed a set of abilities.

{Alright then man, just let me know if you chang your mind alright} Matthew replied.

Though it seemed he didn't pan on giving up not like it mattered since Ethan wouldn't be going....or so he thought.

Anyways Ethan didn't rush to end the call since his hands were wet .

Unfortunately after several minutes Matthew didn't hang up.

"..."

Piaw!

[Alright then Matthew I'll see you later] Ethan said in an audible tone.

{Before I forget, bro do you remember the girl that sold you the car?}

[Yeah I do...wait how do you know about that?] Ethan asked, his suspicion rose when he thought of how Matthew knew such a thing unless he was stalking him.

{Shhhh, don't worry about the small details bro. Just know that she'll be here tonight and I also got her number so I plan to ask her out....}

[Oh...good for you ]

Their conversation continued but as they say all good things must come to an end and this applies to their conversation.

.....

"HAHHHH...he's getting good... unfortunately I'm better " Ethan thought, if it weren't for his stubborness the chances of hum leaving were a solid 70/30.
