Chapter 24 - Imposter

"Well," Liu Heng cleared his throat, "Dandan, can you step out for a bit? I need to discuss something with Weisheng."

The alleged Xiaodan nodded playfully before hopping out of the room. Weisheng was in complete disbelief. Liu Heng snapped his fingers together to get Weisheng's attention.

"You probably saw the news of Cang Tao," Liu Heng narrowed his eyes, "Our only suspect is dead. The statement his friend Yun Shui gave us closes this case. She said Cang Tao committed suicide due to guilt of murdering his friend." He shrugged, "In short, we're off the case."

Weisheng hadn't expected this. He remembered Ru rewriting Yun Shui's memories, but he didn't think the case would be closed just because of that statement. He couldn't tell if this was a good thing or a bad thing.

"Anyways," Liu Heng broke his train of thought, "Take these reports. New case," He pointed at the reports on his table, "I already gave others their case. You're on this alone, so do good. If you mess this up, I'll skewer your eyes." He scornfully added.

"Noted, Mr. Liu," Weisheng grabbed the reports from the table.

"And," Liu Heng muttered, "Take Dandan along. She's here for an internship program. This case is the easiest." He added, "Treat my sister nicely, or you know what happens."

"Understood," Weisheng muttered under his breath and left the room.

The alleged Xiaodan was waiting outside. Weisheng laid his eyes on her fresh appearance. She looked so different with her hair tied up. The casual cardigan hung about her simple skirt. Even her makeup was youthful. She looked less alluring than usual but more cute. Weisheng shook his head and frowned. He had no time to daydream about her appearance.

He approached her, "What is this about?" He asked with a frown.

"Oh, Mr. Yuan Yuan," Xiaoling chuckled, "Why the long face? I'm just here for an internship program."

Weisheng's frown deepened. He was sure he made it clear that he didn't want her around at work. She leaned toward his face, but he still kept the frown on.

"Weisheng," She whispered, "I'm here to investigate our secret from yesterday." She explained herself, "So, don't mind me, and do your job. I won't interfere," She said playfully.

"That is not the issue," Weisheng said.

"Then why are you mad?" Xiaoling scoffed.

"Why are you Mr. Liu's little sister?" Weisheng asked with a frown, keeping his voice low.

Xiaoling chuckled, "Oh, so that's the problem. You think if your boss found out my identity, he's going to skewer your eyes?"

"Y-Yes…" Weisheng looked away in embarrassment.

Xiaoling lightly slapped his arm, "Don't worry about that. I had Qiang take the real Xiaodan for shopping. The spell I put on Mr. Liu will not go out easily!"

"Are you sure?" Weisheng raised an eyebrow. He had less expectations for Xiaoling after seeing her failing to tackle that devil yesterday.

"What do you even take me as?" Xiaoling crossed her arms and frowned, "I'm a sorceress!"

Weisheng narrowed his eyes, "Uh huh?"

Xiaoling scoffed in disbelief, "What's with this skepticism?"

"I mean…"

"Tell me or go to the Underworld!"

Weisheng nervously coughed, "It's just that you couldn't take care of that devil yesterday, so I naturally have fewer expectations for you."

"Oh," Xiaoling pouted, "That's because you have that stupid curse! If you hadn't put that unknown spell on me, that devil would be begging for mercy!"

"Okay," Weisheng nodded.

"What?!" Xiaoling frowned, "Acknowledge me."

"... I said okay." Weisheng sighed, "Forget about it. I have to work now. Please don't interfere."

Weisheng tried to ignore her presence and walked to his cubicle. He sat down to go through the reports. Xiaoling pulled a chair from someone's empty cubicle to sit beside him, peeking into the reports.

Weisheng's grip on the reports tightened when she leaned to peek. The case was about tax evasion, so there wasn't much work. Weisheng only needed to speak to some people to confirm facts and gather evidence against the person.

He made notes while going through the report, but his mind was elsewhere. He was thinking about seeing Yun Shui to ask for his late father's reports. But with Xiaoling by his side, he had to stay cautious and focus on work.

Part of the reason why Weisheng was poor at his job was because he never focused on the case at hand. He was always plotting to search for his late father's case reports. The only other case he seriously focused on was Gao Bojing's case.

He was cut out to be a Prosecutor - only if his late father's case didn't exist. Xiaoling could tell what went through his mind just by looking at his expressions. He wasn't even trying to put any effort into the tax evasion case.

"Weisheng," Xiaoling called him solemnly.

He raised his head from the reports to look at her.

"The higher you go, the easier it gets for you to pry information out of people," She advised him, "A level 12 Prosecutor can't solve an S-Class case by himself. For a level 12 Prosecutor, a mere tax evasion case will open new doors."

Weisheng slowly turned his eyes back to the reports. Xiaoling wondered if he understood her advice.

Suddenly, he stood up, "Miss Liu," He called her with her imposter name, "We have people to meet. Kindly accompany me for your internship program."

Xiaoling smiled in success, "Understood!"

She wasn't sure if this was a formality or if he had heeded her advice. She was joyous that he decided to move from his cramped cubicle. Suddenly, Xiaoling wondered if she thought like a granny. She shook her head and followed Weisheng outside.

Weisheng opened the car door for her before getting in himself. Even though Xiaoling was an imposter, Weisheng completed all formalities diligently. Not even Liu Heng could question him for this.
