Opening her eyes, Paula squinted against the gentle light filtering through the lace curtain.
Given that some parts of her body were bandaged, she felt unusually weak. She took a deep, tired breath. She looked around, her eyes clouded with confusion at the unfamiliar surroundings.
"Where am I?" she murmured to herself, her voice barely more than a whisper.
Paula noticed that her clothes had been changed into a simple, soft pair of pajamas. She tried to sit up, feeling a wave of weakness pass over her.
Her mind raced over the events of the night before, including meeting Len, getting hurt, and feeling completely enveloped in darkness. Her memory made her eyes grow gloomy.
"Len must have brought me here," she thought to herself, her heart heavy. She looked around, trying to remember where she was.
Paula hauled herself out of bed and approached the door. There was a long, silent hallway outside that reverberated with her footsteps.
