"Occupation, Age, Race, Religion, and Identity Tablet please." The guard said with the most bored expression and monotone voice possible. This guy didn't even try to act friendly…
Well it's not like they have HR or anything.
"Adventurer, 2000, Drow, none, and here." Nephiah said before grabbing what looked like a dog tag from her neck and showed it to the guard.
The guard pulled out some sort of like…..
To be honest I dont know. It looked like a phone almost but made of a weird rock and it glowed white. Nephiah placed her ID on the stone and it suddenly turned green after a second.
"Right, welcome to Dragonfell. Dark elves aren't welcome here so don't make trouble or else." The guard said before passing Nephiah along.
"Next." The guard said before I stepped forward.
The guard was around the same height as me and wielded a large halberd that he leaned on. He wore very nice looking armor. His pauldrens and gauntlets were polished and well taken care of, he wore heavy mail plating underneath that. His cuirass was blocked from my vision by his half-green half-red surcoat. The most interesting thing about his armor though was his helmet.
A salet and kettle helm combo?
It looked a little weird but definitely seemed like it would be effective. The helmet was shaped like a typical kettle helm with two eyeslits made in the crease of the helmet.
The guard did not fully wear the helmet however, and chose instead to have it hang on the top of his head.
"Occupation, Age, Race, Religion, and Identity Tablet please." The guard said with a heavy sigh it was obvious he said this very often.
"…Mercenary, 20, Barbarian, none, and I lost my Identity Tablet.." I said trying my best to sound confident about my answers.
In reality I was confident about none of my answers.
"Right, you Barbarians…," the guard said with a heavy sigh. "Look, Barbarian, you can only get in if you pay 5 gold or show me a tablet. You do know what gold is right? Let me put it in your language. Shiny!! Shiny!! Hahaha!!!"
The guard said before he erupted in laughter.
The two guards on either side of him joined in on the laughter.
"I know what gold is…" I said before handing the guard the 5 gold he requested.
Did he just fucking put it in his pocket?
Did I just get fucking scammed? The thought of it pissed my off entirely.
"Right, 'course you do. Anyways go to the local Identification Hall and pick up a new one. Go straight for three streets, right for four, left for two then straight again, then left, then go straight pass the Church of Gale, then go right again and you'll see it there you can't miss it."
Fuck you mean I can't miss it!!? Whats up with those confusing ass directions!!?
"No no, it's left for two, then right, then straight!!!" The other guard said.
"No, remember those houses burned down and they had to rebuild them!!" The other guard said.
"No, I remember specifically what the captain said. Straight for three streets, right for four, left for two then straight again, then left, then go straight pass the Church of Gale, then go right again and you'll see it there you can't miss it….. Or was that for the brothel that just opened up?"
"Uh, yes got it I'll be on my way now." I said trying to squeeze by the confusing conversation.
"Hold it there, barbie. Ya' can't just enter you have to fill out a Proof of Passage form before you go through."
Sigh. This wasn't the fantasy life I was expecting.
After passing through the very long, tedious, and confusing processing thay came with losing my ID, I was finally able to enter the city for the first time.
And…. The first thought I had was it smelt bad. It smelt like shit, piss, and booze. But after a while you kinda got used to it.
Kinda.
"Finally, Reynard, I thought something bad had happened." Nephiah said before once joining me again.
"They were processing me. Apparently loosing your Identification Tablet is a big deal." I said sheepishly.
Nephiah chuckled a bit before talking. "Yeah, only idiots lose them." She said with a grin.
"Right…"
The city was actually a pretty amazing sight to see. The city was complety different from anything you would see in a game or movie. It was lively and hundreds of people filled the streets. There was shops, food, and entertainment along with things like scams and weird people.
Just like a regular city.
The thing that blew my mind was the people. The people themselves looked fairly normal if not a little more better looking on average. They wore stereotypical medieval clothes like tunics and dresses. And just like medieval times almost everyone carried a sword. It was a really cool sight to see.
If only it didn't smell so bad.
"The guards said I had to renew my Identification at an Identification Hall. Do you know where that is?" I asked the dark elf.
"This is my first time in this city, Reynard.."
Right.
"Lets ask some locals." I suggested.
Nephiah seemed a bit reluctant but agreed anyways.
The first man I asked was a average looking middle aged man with a rough salt and pepper beard. The reason I asked him was because he was transporting firewood with a handcart. So he must know his way around this city. Right?
"Excuse me sir, do you happen to know where the Identification Hall is?" I asked the man.
The man sneered and impolitely looked away from me right as I asked him.
"Why would I tell you, you stupid Wela!!? Damn barbarians always acting like everyone wants to help you.."
Well. That couldn't have gone any worse.
But what the fuck is a Wela? Didn't that bandit call me that too?.
I had a feeling that the word didn't mean something good.
