Chapter 40 - Letter from a stranger

After he was done with James, he went further to the other two men. With nothing but mirth in his heart, he decided to pay a visit before he returns to his castle. Stillness was present in the Nolan home, Mr and Mrs Nolan and their youngest child, Kayden were fast asleep but Gabrielle and Mirabelle were wide awake. Mirabelle wanted to enjoy the cool breeze of the night before going to bed and Gabrielle had to watch over her. The sisters were seated on a small iron bench that was situated in their small garden. Unbeknownst to them, a familiar pair of silver eyes watched them carefully.

"I plan to write a letter to Sir Thomas, just to see how he's doing. What do you think?" Gabrielle asked as she adjusted herself on the bench while holding a parchment paper, an ink bottle and a pen made from feather.

"You miss him already" Mirabelle teased. "Stop it, I'm serious. Should I write to him?" Gabrielle asked once more and Mirabelle nodded "Of course, it will let him know that you care". "Okay I'd do that but first, I'm thirsty. I'd be right back" Gabrielle said as she stood up from the bench and entered the house leaving her writing materials behind. The onlooker who watched from behind the tall plants, showed himself and walked closer to the blind and ignorant Mirabelle. Just when he was close enough, Mirabelle felt her hairs stand on end. "Who's there?" She asked cautiously but got no reply.

She felt an extra weight rest on the iron bench but she knew it wasn't her sister's. She felt helpless because she didn't know what was out there with her. She questioned again but still no reply and she eventually gave up. If the person or thing wanted to hurt her, it would have done so by now but it still didn't mean she was completely relaxed. She felt like whatever was out there was going to bore a hole on her skin because of how thick the atmosphere turned and how intense she felt it's gaze on her. She knew it was staring at her. Definitely!. Was it a night creature? She asked herself without voicing it.

After some torturous minutes, she finally felt the person, it placed a paper in her hand and from the slight touch of both their hands she knew it was a man and just like that, she didn't feel his presence anymore. The door creaked open and Gabrielle walked towards the bench "These plants are getting too tall. Papa doesn't have the time to work on our own garden anymore because he's so busy with the king's. I just hope snakes don't find their way here" Gabrielle uttered as she was about to sit down. She looked a tad confused as she wondered what happened to the parchment paper she intended to write on but then, saw the paper in mirabelle's hand with words carefully written on it.

After Gabrielle mentioned the king, Mirabelle's mind trailed back to when she told him about her dreams and also the time he called out her name. Her name rolling off his lips like honey, sounding all pleasant in her ear. She remembered she asked herself how he knew her name, forgetting her father mentioned her name while they were in the castle and also when her mother thought a night creature had shape-shifted to her.

"Mirabelle? Was someone here?" Gabrielle asked snapping her out of her thoughts. Gabrielle knew her sister could write but not as neatly as those words on the paper because of her blindness. So someone must have written them while she was away.

"Yes, I don't know who it was. He placed this in my hand" Mirabelle stretched out the paper towards the direction she heard she sister's voice coming from.

"I hope that one day those scales come off your eyes so I can behold those beautiful orbs of yours. The entirety of your being intrigues me Mira". Gabrielle's mouth went agape after she read those words aloud. Mirabelle on the other hand seemed frozen for some seconds. Gabrielle looked around trying to find who wrote those words even though a part of her knew it would be futile to search. Firstly, the person used the paper she wanted to use to write to Sir Thomas. Secondly, it was past midnight now. It was absurd to know a person was watching them by this time of the night and the moment Gabrielle left, the person saw it as a perfect opportunity to write this letter.

"Who do you think it might be?" Mirabelle asked. "I don't have any idea but this is strange. Why not come in the day? Why at night? Or is it a night creature?" Gabrielle asked as her breath hitched also igniting the fear in Mirabelle's heart.

Imagining her sister might have caught the eyes of a night creature, Gabrielle quickly turned cautious. "Let's go inside.". They both entered the house quickly, afraid that whoever might have wrote this was still lingering outside....watching. It made Gabrielle's toes curl in discomfort. They entered their room and Gabrielle quickly turned on a candle and stared at the paper once more trying to comprehend what happened.
