"That vow means nothing because, to me, this marriage is fucking dead. I want you to sign this divorce agreement. The alimony is $50m, and I know you are bigger than that," Selina insisted on her demand.
Zane took three inches closer to Selina. His eyes seemed scared to glance at the papers in Selina's hand as he kept a straight face before saying.
"Don't threaten me with that word ever again. You have been living with me in my fiery pit for four years. It would be disastrous to our fates if we don't burn to ashes together in this fiery pit." As he paused for a while. He spoke in a soft tone but it sounded more intimidating this time around while goosebumps teased Selina's skin. "Don't think of running away from me. Otherwise, I might go wild, coming after you differently." He warned her before retreating to Jane.
"Divorce Selina, if she wants it. Why hold back?" Jane questioned, impatient to hear him give in to Selina's demands. However, Zane ignored the two women while he was striding to the door.
"Zane, sign the divorce papers or I will take this to court!!!" Selina persisted in her decision as she threatened Zane, but he pretended not to hear while exiting the house.
Jane snatched the divorce agreement from Selina's hand and went after Zane, leaving Selina behind in the house.
Selina was feeling sweat dripping down her spine at her worst nightmare coming true. She stood there speechless; her vision went blurred, watching his figure disappear into the light. She couldn't stop her body from breaking as she staggered backward, but she got a grip on herself from collapsing.
.
.
As Selina couldn't leave the mansion because of the guards Zane instructed to watch her until it was nightfall. She had been in the master bedroom while packing her stuff.
She took her clothes from the closet and put them into her luggage with other stuff to leave the marriage on her will, since Zane was adamant about signing the divorce agreement.
While packing her stuff, Selina heard her cell phone ringing on the bed. She left the stuff she was packing and picked up her cell phone. Staring at the caller ID, fear kicked into her heart. It was her father's butler, and they both only contacted each other when something crucial happened in the Cortez house.
Selina answered the call. "Hello, Butler Lee,"
"Miss, something terrible happened. Where are you?" came the panicked voice of the butler over the phone, causing Selina's heart to skip.
"I'm at Zane's mansion. Tell me, what happened?" Selina demanded over the phone.
"I'm in the hospital right now with your father. His blood pressure shoots up again, and he is in a critical condition now. He wants to see you." The butler delivered the message from the hospital where he was at this moment.
Hearing the devastating news, her voice cracked. "Okay, I will be there right away."
As the call ended, Selina was pacing in the room with a puzzled look and wondered what happened to her father to be under cardiac arrest again. She didn't hesitate any longer and dashed out of the master bedroom, descending the stairs. Striding towards the exit, she met Zane, who was stepping into the house.
As they both got closer to each other, Zane noticed her anxious expression with teary eyes.
"Where are you heading at this hour of the night?" he asked, sounding calm, but a little anger leaked in his voice.
"I'm going to my father. He is in a critical condition in the hospital. He had a cardiac arrest. I'm scared something bad would happen to him." Selina answered. Fear occupied Selina's eyes, as she desperately hoped nothing would go wrong with her father's health at this worst moment.
As Zane heard the news from her, his lips twirled up into a sneer while he sarcastically said. "I see. Tristan went into cardiac arrest because he couldn't bear the news that Cortez's company is now mine, to uphold its responsibility."
Selina was at a loss for words as she blinked blankly. She didn't want to believe what her head calculated behind his words. She confirmed. "What do you mean Cortez company is now in your responsibility?"
Zane tilted his head a little, and his hand slipped into his pants pocket, answering. "It had been long since I gained your family company and assets, but Tristan is slow-witted to find out until now."
Selina's mouth let out a gasp as his words stunned her. Her head was too heavy to fathom this sudden betrayal, which caused her chest to wreck in pain.
She shook her head in disbelief as the tears in her eyes stroked down her cheeks helplessly. "No. This is not true. You are upset with the divorce and thought of pulling my legs. You haven't done it, right? Tell me you haven't, Zane." she asked with a bright smile, hoping it was a prank, but his stern expression said otherwise.
"Yes, I now have control of your parents' company and assets. They are all mine." Zane replied, showing no hint of remorse in his voice and the hopeful grin on Selina's lips faded.
She staggered backward when those solemn words left his lips. It was now she realized the reason her father went into cardiac arrest was because of the betrayal.
Staring at him with misty-sad eyes, she reminded him of his words with a heart-wretching voice, saying. "What you did was never part of the deal. It was never part of the marriage contract. You can't betray me like this, Zane. You promised me you had no other motive behind the marriage contracts, and I trusted you. That was why I got married to you."
She disheveled to the floor, clutching her dress in her chest position, feeling the excruciating pain in there , like it was on fire and being pricked by a thorn, as she found it difficult to catch a breath in his presence.
