Chapter 17 - The Holy Empire's capital

It was morning. I yawned as I tidied my bed and did my morning workout. It only consisted of push-ups and squats, but it keeps me fit. After that, I headed downstairs to the tavern where there was a place to eat.

By the time I got there, I saw Gesine; she was already eating. She didn't even bother inviting me, but it's alright. I got a decent sleep.

I headed towards her table and sat down beside her. She looked at me with food in her mouth and swallowed it.

"Good morning," she greeted me first.

"Good morning, why didn't you wake me up to eat?"

"I did, I banged on your door a couple of times, but you didn't wake up, and I was hungry, so I did what any hungry person would do."

She really is a food lover, and she banged on my door? Maybe that was the reason I heard banging sounds in my dream; it was her all along.

"Anyways, what are you eating?"

"Bread and soup and water, that's the only thing they have," she looked a bit pissed. I bet she missed that fancy place back in town.

"What do you expect from a tavern in the middle of nowhere?" The food didn't look appetizing, so I stuck with water. It's only a few more hours until we arrive at the capital, so we might as well wait and eat food there.

"After eating, head back to your room and pack up. We will leave after a few more hours." I left Gesine to eat alone and headed back to my room.

"Let's see what the old man packed for us." I didn't really use the stuff Artor gave us. The only things we did use, however, were the foods that he provided.

I looked around the bag and discovered a mask. It was a mask that covers the upper part of the face, including the nose, but shows the mouth.

Why would the old man—I mean Artor give this to me? And yeah, I didn't really think things through. I didn't even change my face, but with Gesine here, I can only change my hair color and eye color.

So I changed my dark black hair to blue and turned my red eyes into dark green. No one would suspect it, right?

I packed my things and opened the door. "Ahh!" I bumped into Gesine. She looked at me with a confused face.

"Who are you? What did you do to Cassius?" The disguise worked! Thank goodness. "Don't worry, Gesine, it's just..."

Whack!

Gesine punched me on the chin. Okay, uhm, the disguise worked too well. "What did you do to Cassius?"

"Chill out, Gesine! It's me, I'm Cassius!" She halted for a minute and stepped away from me.

"Huh? Why are you like that then?" Wow, she's kind of easy to convince. Anyways, I explained to her that I needed a disguise so I could surprise my relatives.

That was the weakest and stupidest reason I have ever made, but with heaven's luck or she's just dumb, she was convinced.

After that, I helped her pack up and reunited with our horses and continued down the road. There were only a few hours left until we arrived there.

A few hours of traveling and we eventually ended up in a town-like place. As we continued on the road, I could see huge walls in the far distance; we are close.

We arrived at the gate where there was a checkpoint, and one of the guards approached us.

"Back again to see your aunt, I suppose, Miss Gesine?" The guard knew Gesine; from the looks of it, she did say she comes here every once in a while.

"And state your name and purpose here, sir," he looked at me. "My name is Cassius, and I'm visiting a relative of mine as well as celebrating Heroes Day."

The guard looked at Gesine, and she nodded. Looks like she vouched for me. The guard let us through the gates, and we entered the city.

As we entered, the streets were bustling with carriages and wagons. There were a lot of people here, and no one seems to recognize me, so that's good.

"Come follow me. I know a trusted place, we can stay for the night", since Gesine knows the streets more than I do. I decided to follow her lead.
