She and her Aunt Phoebe were currently walking the back alleys near where the furies were last spotted. Dumpsters filled to the brim with trash lined the alley they were currently in. Cardboard boxes with tents covering them served as temporary shelters for the homeless who had chosen to call this alley their home. A stench that only came from the unwashed, and rotten food stuck to the bottom of the dumpsters permeated the air.
It would have been unthinkable and utterly dangerous to walk streets like these, but Luna felt safe thanks to the invisibility spell her aunt had cast over them. The only problem was that they weren't allowed to talk while under the spell's effects. If they were to speak, the spell would be broken.
Which really sucked that she kept feeling the urge to yawn. That's what she gets for taking a two-hour nap before heading out. Sleeping for such a short while always made one feel even more tired after they woke up.
The two of them walked down alley after alley, street after street. There were still no signs of any furies.
Aunt Phoebe, who had designed the invisibility spell to allow her and Luna to see each other, held up her hand. Since no one was around, Aunt Phoebe dropped the invisibility spell. "We've been at this for four hours. I say we take a break."
Now that the invisibility spell was no longer in effect, Luna let loose the yawn she had been suppressing all this time. "Sounds good to me."
Just as the last word left her mouth, the sound of something metal striking pavement clanged loudly in the quiet morning air. It was soon followed by a piercing scream.
Luna took off at a run, following closely behind Aunt Phoebe. At the same time, she withdrew the dagger that was strapped to her thigh, which had been hidden underneath the long black hoodie that she was wearing.
Aunt Phoebe called forth her magic in preparation for what they might find. Tiny crystals of ice formed around her fingers and an icy mist wrapped around her hands like a glove.
Each witch possessed a unique power. Her Aunt Phoebe had the special power over the ice element. For Luna, she possessed the water element. She was still, unfortunately, unable to control her power very well. That meant that on days that she was feeling sad-it would rain, or sometimes if she was too excited and happened to be near a body of water, that water then could explode into a shower.
They rounded the corner, drawing closer to where the scream had come from. Four women wearing black stood over the prone form of a man who was bleeding out through his stomach. The woman closest to the man had two seraph blades drawn, blood dripping down off the ends.
Aunt Phoebe, not wasting any time, raised her hand and let loose an icy wave of mist. The woman closest to them did not have enough time to react and was frozen solid when the icy mist hit her.
The other three dodged out of the way, flying up into the air when black wings sprouted from their backs. They had found the furies that they had been searching for.
Aunt Phoebe shot out another icy wave while Luna launched her dagger, not forgetting to put a return-to-owner spell on it in case she missed.
A furie flew down toward them, its arm was outstretched and long black claws covered its hand. Its hair, which had been a curly blonde, was now a mass of writhing snakes.
The dagger flew past it, striking the one behind it in the wing. Luna quickly reached into the pocket of her hoodie to grab the premade potions she had stuffed in there. She couldn't rely on her Aunt Phoebe because she was locked in combat with the furie that had the seraph blades.
Luna threw two potions at the same time, hoping that at least one of them would hit the furie. Luck was on her side. As the furie dodged to the side to avoid the incoming potion, the other potion, which Luna had thrown a second later, hit the furie in the face, exploding on contact.
The furie plummeted to the ground. Before it hit, the furie turned into a cloud of green smoke, signaling that the creature was dead. The only thing left from the furie was a small black and green stone, the core of the creature.
Luna picked up the core and stuffed it into the pocket of her pants. They had to deliver the stones to the Elders who would then deliver them to the High Elders. The High Elders would then use their holy powers to completely destroy the cores to make sure that the demons wouldn't have any chances of resurrecting.
Aunt Phoebe had already finished off the one she had been fighting against and was just finishing up with the last one. While she did that, Luna went over to the one that her Aunt Phoebe had frozen at the beginning.
Luna delivered a kick to the frozen furie, shattering it into a million little pieces. The pieces of ice evaporated into green smoke. She bent down and picked up the core.
Aunt Phoebe, who finished off the last furie, was now bending down of the guy the furies had been chasing. She put a hand over the guy's wound and froze it to stop the bleeding.
"Let's carry him to where people can see him."
"Why did they even go after him?" Luna asked. Furies tended to go after those who had committed a crime of some sort.
Aunt Phoebe pointed to a purse that lay not far from him. "I would say that this guy is a purse snatcher. Although it is possible that the purse could be his." Now curious, Aunt Phoebe left the man's side and rummaged through the purse's contents. "Hmm. Definitely not his."
Luna ignored her Aunt Phoebe and went over to the man, wrapping her arms around him to pick him up. He was heavier than he looked.
With her Aunt's help, the two of them carried the man to a more open area. Aunt Phoebe assured her that the man wasn't that badly injured and would survive until someone found him.
