Chapter 17 - Dating app

Cora didn't have to wait too long before the line connected and before she could speak, Harriet did.

"Cora darling, did you go?" came Harriet's voice from the other end of the line and Cora nodded, momentarily forgetting she was speaking face-to-face with her.

"Yes. I just left his house. You didn't mention anything about him having a girlfriend," she complained and Harriet waved it off.

"Well, I'm still yet to decide if she's with him or not. I can't just tell you about some irrelevant girl, who might end up not being up to my standard," Harriet said and Cora frowned, not liking where the discussion was going.

Does that mean that Liam's mother wouldn't think twice about her if Fiona turned out good to her? She mused and then decided to voice out her concern.

"So, what happens when she turns out to match your standard? You would choose her over me?" she asked and Harriet sighed.

"If she's from a wealthy home and the company stands to gain from their union then it means Liam made a good choice and I wouldn't have to interfere. But if it turns out otherwise, then I don't see why I would let him make such a costly mistake," Harriet said and Cora shook her head.

"Does that mean, I'm a second option? I'm too worthy to be anyone's second option," Cora said, feeling upset already.

"Then, be the only choice," Harriet said and Cora's frown deepened.

How could she be his only choice when he seemed pretty in love with Fiona? How was that even possible? Except there was no Fiona. That wasn't what Harriet was implying, it was it?

"How do you mean? He only has a girlfriend so how can I be his only choice?"

"Well, you can keep her close and keep an eye on her. Once you find out anything suspicious or puts Liam at risk, you can use it to tear them apart," Harriet said, wanting to keep Cora close while at the same time watching out for the Fiona girl.

"Then it might interest you to know that she seems to be hiding something," Cora said, grateful that she had at least taken note of that.

"How so? And were you able to find out what it was?" Harriet asked, intrigued.

"She was behaving suspiciously and I think Liam knew whatever she was hiding. They wouldn't even say much about her," Cora said and Harriet nodded, making a mental note to ask all the necessary questions she could to know about the girl when they came for the dinner date the next day.

"I see. While I try to find out what it is, try your best to find out more about her and what it is they're hiding," Harriet said before ending the call.

As much as she would've loved to have Cora as her daughter-in-law, she knew she would have to give Liam and his girlfriend a chance.

She hoped that whoever the girl was, was worthy of her son and she wouldn't have to choose a wife for Liam. And whatever it was that Cora suspected, she would have to find out about it during dinner.

Away from there, Fiona the moment she stepped into Liam's room, took out her phone and texted Elena. [Hey, Lena. Guess what!]

When she saw that Elena was online, she decided to wait before texting her again.

Elena, who had been going through her closet to pick out a nice dress for her lunch date with her mysterious guy glanced at her phone when it beeped.

A smile curled up on her face when she saw that it was Fiona asking her to guess. [You made out with him again?] she texted back and smiled as she tried to imagine Fiona's response.

She laughed when she read Fiona's response. [What? Hell no, please.]

Of course, she knew there was no way Liam would have his way with Fiona after disrespecting her that way. [Fi, what is it then?] she inquired.

[Well, I was called yesterday to come for an interview at PK Enterprise on Monday. Can you believe that? PK Enterprise!] Fiona texted.

The moment Elena read her reply, she paused what she was doing and immediately dialed Fiona's line.

"Tell me you're kidding," Elena said immediately after the call connected, and Fiona giggled happily.

"I know right? I was so happy when I got the call from PK Enterprise at the mall yesterday," Fiona said and Elena smiled.

"So, you're finally about to leave the agency and start working for a big company," Elena said and Fiona laughed.

"I can't wait, Lena. You know what's more? I'll be interviewed for the position of the CEO's personal assistant. We are talking about a job at PK Enterprise as the CEO's P.A! It excites me," She said and Elena smiled.

"I'm so happy for you, Fi. I hope you get the job," Elena said and Fiona nodded.

"I hope so, too."

"Thank you for this good news. Now I can go for my date with a happy smile," she said and Fiona frowned.

"Date? What date?" she inquired curiously.

"Well, I signed up on a dating app and I matched with someone. I'm meeting with him today," she explained and Fiona burst into laughter.

Elena was never the type to sign up on a dating app so it sounded both unbelievable and ridiculous.

"Since when?" she asked and Elena laughed.

"I signed it up to pass the time. Besides, you know how easily I get disinterested in men. So, I decided to try a dating site. Perhaps I'll be able to find someone I could date for a little longer than three weeks," she said and Fiona nodded.

"But what if this guy is some psychopath or something?" Fiona asked in concern.

"Exactly the reason j asked for a lunch date. Besides, I don't think this one is one...."

"And how would you know that? It's your first time on the app," she countered.

"I know you're worried but don't worry about me, Fi. I'll be fine," Elena assured and she sighed.

"If you say so and I wish you luck with your date," she said with a laugh.

"Yeah. Let's talk when I get back. I don't want to be late. Bye. Love you," Elena said before hanging up so she could prepare and leave on time.
