Chapter 13 - School life & new class!

After cleaning himself with water (felt better than a charm), Sebastian and Marc went to the charms faculty and picked up Andreas and went on to eat afterwards.

Sebastian mainly talked with Andreas, who told him that he got an E in Charms and that meant, that they could cast all or nearly all charms when they came back from the forest, but that the proficiency wasn't high, so the charms were weak, or they sometimes failed to cast some of them. Andreas had been able to cast everything, except the water summoning charm and some other charms like the knockback jinx barely had knockback.

Thus, they finished eating and proceeded to go to their room for a small break.

History class was mainly boring, as Sebastian had read most of it in Harry Potter or learned about the knowledge in his past life, though there were a few entertaining stories.

The teacher said that they would start with something everyone would find interesting, so they learned about the medieval ages and read a few stories about various wizards from Europe back then. Some were experiences and explanations about the muggle and wizard ruling system and others were about the daily life or about funny experiences and the development (history, not scientific) of new spells and potions.

And like this, their first 'History & Geography' class passed.

After that, they went back to practicing dodging spells, now from various directions, with the dummies sometimes shooting magical jelly balls that would burst without any pain and paint a part of his robe, while Andreas was sent off to his room with some kind of book Sebastian wasn't allowed to know about.

They went to dinner at 19 o'clock and after coming back, they were sent to their rooms, after each of them was given a spell paper.

Sebastian got the severing charm:

'Severing Charm:

Incantation: Diffindo (deef-IN-doe)

Type: Charm

Hand movement:

Light: Light green, pink or red

Effect: Severs objects

Creator: Delfina Crimp (1400s)

'

'Oh, I think I have heard of that charm in Harry Potter, wasn't it taught in the 4th year? I remember reading it. But I think it said that the charm could also be used on humans and even kill if used incorrectly, so I should watch out.'

"Diffindo.", Sebastian said and a small, green blade, just a few centimetres long flew out from his staff and hit the wall, doing no damage.

'That was very small, can it be even smaller or sharper?'

Sebastian concentrated and thought about what the right intent for this charm could be.

'From what I read, it normally is used on objects, so the intent shouldn't be, to hurt or inflict pain, but rather create a clean cut. Therefore, it has to be very sharp and thin, but the length should be variable, to create small or bit cuts, according to the chanters wishes. So how a bout sharpness, but also control and precision? Let's try.', Sebatian thought.

"Diffindo.", he said, as the thought of a precise and sharp scalpel, used to make cuts, nothing else. Small, this, but sharp.

The green light flew out again and hit the wall. This time, it was just one centimetre wide and even thinner than before, but lest a slam and clean cut on the wall like it was made with a surgical laser.

'Good'

After that, Sebatian sat on his bed and tried to vary the sharpness and size of the cut. After a few tries, he realized, that a controlled cut isn't just about sharpness and precision of the place, but also how deep it should be going. Is it supposed to cut a bag or the books within too. Should it cut the rope binding someone or the wrists too? Such a mistake could be fatal for him or his companions.

As such, he spent the whole night practicing the spell and only sleeping late at night, leaving behind tens of small and big cuts on the wall opposite his bed.

Today was transfiguration class. Finally. Sebastian didn't dare try the transfiguration spell in the forest, but he was eager to learn this art, he just hoped, that he had some kind of talent.

"Welcome students, to your first transfiguration class. I heard that nearly all of you succeeded in casting the transfiguration spell and we even have one person that was evaluated with an O, congratulations to you, Andreas Kuhn.", the teacher said, while Andreas began to smile shyly next to Sebastian.

'?? Why is he blushing? But wow! I didn't know he was that good at transfiguration.', Sebastian thought.

"But I also heard that there was someone that didn't even try casting the spell. Sebastian Roth, would you mind explaining to us, why?", the teacher said, as he looked into the crowd of students.

Sebastian stood up, embarrassed, and looked at the professor, ignoring all the other students looking at him.

"Well, I looked at the description of the spell and I thought that it could be very dangerous. If changing the shape was possible, why not changing the material itself too? Doing this, I could accidentally injure myself and I didn't even want to think what would have happened if I were to hit myself without supervision and inside of a forest with dangerous creatures.", Sebastian said in a dry voice.

The professor looked at him and began smiling.

"I am impressed that you were able to think that far! Your train of thought was completely correct, we could possibly change ourselves or the material and that is very dangerous. But you didn't need to worry about that with the spell all of you got. It was specifically made to only change hard solid objects and the largest change would have been changing the structure of the whole object, not a molecular level. And the power output was limited, too. But still, I commend you.", the teacher explained.

"Now, class, we are going to learn a simple transfiguration spell, that changes the material of an object. We want to change a matchstick into a needle and afterwards, we are going to make a whole matchbox out of a small cube of wood. That would be all for today, and to not despair if you aren't able to do it. Today, I want to further evaluate your raw potential in transfiguration and from the next class onwards, we are going to learn the transfiguration alphabet, laws, and we are going to learn about the structure the makes up our world. After that, everyone of you will be able to complete the task very quickly.", the professor said and added, "And you may call me Professor Kuhn."

Sebatian was stunned and turned to Andreas, "THAT IS YOUR FATHER? THE TEACHER YOU TOULD US ABOUT?", he asked, a bit too rushed.

"Uhm, yes, he is my father and a researcher in the transfiguration department. A good one at that. And transfiguration is just a talent most of my family possesses, though mine is very strong, they said.", Andreas said, smiling lightly.

"Wow, that's so cool. Can you help me if I need it?", Sebastian asked to which Andreas nodded.

After that, they had to read about the two spells needed and the basic 'formula' behind it. In general, they wouldn't need a spell to transfigure something, but a specialised spell would make it easier. In the long run, they would be limited, though, as some premade things do not into every situation, or who needs many needles in his life, when they turn back soon after.

The first incantation was 'needolo', which turns something small into a needle and making it look like you want, though the modifications were harshly limited by the spell.

The basic formula to transfiguration was: (Intent + ½*Channelling) * Understanding / (Mass + Transfiguration class)

This formula roughly gave you an impression on how good and strong the transfiguration would turn out.

If you have a lot of intent and understanding, you transfiguration would be closer to what you want it to be. But if a rookie wants to transfigure something large, his understanding wouldn't be enough.

The different units were explained as follows:

'Intent = Strength and clearness of the wanted result (May not vary too much from the spells basic result)

Channelling – Restricted knowledge

Understanding = How much you know about the materials properties and needed changes ('Fake' understanding is given through spells. Doesn't replace actual understanding.)

Mass = mass in g/kg, depending on the kind of transfiguration and understanding

Transfiguration class = 'Restrictions' through laws. The harsher and stronger the laws, the higher the level (Explained in year 2)

'

'That was definitely new, and it sounded exciting. It was a lot more like science than just swoshing your wand and something you don't understand happens. It reminds me a bit of chemistry and physics, just that you need to understand the laws to break them more easily. I wonder if it is the same in charms. If I understand gravity, would levitation and flying be easier? And what about quantum physics…'
