Damien's pov
"she was not born in this pack" I remembered that was one of the descriptions.
"Ava." My mind went blank for a few seconds.
I wasn't going to overreact, it will have to be done either way for the good of the pack. I went to bed with the mind that first thing tomorrow morning I was going to find out all about her background and who she was. Everything about her life.
The next morning, James woke me up in a heist. "What's going on?" I asked, wondering why he had tears in his eyes.
"It's my wife, she's dying."
Joe was my guard and like a best friend. He was the first son of my beta, so I gave him a lot of privileges.
"Dying?" Which meant she was not yet dead, that's better. "What happened."
"It's our baby, the midwife says that the pup is a difficult one and that she won't make it."
Now I remembered that his wife was almost due. We hurried to the care center for pregnant werewolf females. As they gave way for us, I saw Ava, the one the moon goddess chose for me, directing the whole process.
"Take a deep breath." Ava tried to calm her down.
"I don't want to die." She whimpered.
"You won't die." She assured the lady. "Give her air," She took the pregnant lady's hand in hers and gestured for the midwives to take several steps back.
Ava took in a deep breath herself and started to massage the lady's stomach, "I just need to get it to the right position."
The midwives were clueless about what she was doing, but the whispers were that Ava said she could save the lady, so they let her.
I stood there like a guard, watching if this Ava girl could pull it off even when the midwives had given up.
"Now get ready to push" Ava turned to my direction, "James, pls come hold her hand and support her."
"That's not allowed, Ava. Men are not even supposed to be here." The chief midwife said.
"Now is not the time for rules." I blinked, unable to say a word, just fixated watching her. Something about her confidence and her reply made me want to like her a little, but no.
James did as told while everyone else held their breath.
"Now."
James' mate pushed, while James was sweating like he was the one on the bed. A few seconds after that, the cry of a baby filled the room.
"Oh my gosh." Everyone was happy, they wrapped up the baby and the rest was history. I congratulated James, gave him a week off, and left.
I called the chief midwife to my office after I was done with the paperwork for the day.
"My alpha." She bowed to greet me.
"Take a seat." I ordered.
After she had taken her seat, I stood up and walked around my table. "So, tell me about this Ava girl, first I want to know why she was even allowed to help when she is clearly a child and not a qualified midwife." I pretended to be asking her about Ava because I was angry that the rules were broken.
"I'm sorry, you Alpha." She bowed.
"That's not an answer." I crossed my hands on my chest, waiting for her to talk.
The old lady sighed "The truth is, Ava is gifted in so many ways, she lived in the wild before she found our pack and joined, she experienced a lot of things like war, so she learned how to defend herself at a young age, she experienced being taken care of by strangers and later took care of people, which included children, the injured, the pregnant women, and many others, all these happened when she was just a child, she joined the pack at seventeen and by then she had the experience of someone that had lived for thirty years." She took a deep breath upon seeing that my face had changed and frown was on it.
That is why she knows how to contribute to everyone's life in this pack and she has been of great help to all of us. I trust her and I know her so well that's why I called for her." She concluded.
"And how did you know all these things about her?" I asked, I suddenly want to get Ava herself here and get her to tell me all these things herself.
"When she first came here, I was the one that took her in and asked for your permission to keep her with me until she reached eighteen and can now stay at the orphanage pack house alone. During that period she told me how life was for her." The head midwife said after taking a deep breath, I had to lower my frown for her to speak easily.
I took a minute to digest what she had said. "You may leave."
She bowed and left the office. "What is so unique about her?" I asked myself.
Deciding to stalk her was a hard decision, but I took it nonetheless. I went outside to the orphanage pack house and asked around about Ava, they said she had left her room a few minutes ago to the market.
When I got to the market I pretended to be sightseeing, I don't really come all the way to this part of the pack.
I got too close to see what she was buying, it was a type of fish still swimming inside a bowl of water. She didn't even notice me because I was right behind her, out of her sight and hearing.
