Chapter 25 - A New Home

As Dusty, William, Samantha, and Sarah traversed the desolate streets of the abandoned city, their eyes scanned the dilapidated buildings for any sign of shelter. The once-bustling city now lay silent and deserted, its streets littered with debris and overgrown vegetation reclaiming the urban landscape.

Their first stop was the hardware store, its imposing exterior marked by weathered signage and boarded-up windows. As they cautiously made their way inside, they were greeted by rows upon rows of shelves once stocked with tools and supplies. The air was thick with the scent of metal and oil, the echoes of bustling activity now replaced by an eerie silence that seemed to hang heavy in the air.

The spacious interior of the store stretched out before them, its aisles lined with bins of nails and screws, while towering shelves held an assortment of power tools and equipment. Dusty and William exchanged a glance, realizing that while the store offered ample space for supplies, it would be difficult to secure against the threat of zombie hordes.

Disheartened but undeterred, they pressed on, their search for a suitable base of operations leading them to a nearby gun shop. As they approached the building, they could see that the storefront had been ransacked, its windows shattered and its doors hanging askew on their hinges.

Inside, the interior of the gun shop was a scene of chaos, with empty display cases and overturned shelves scattered amidst the debris. The smell of gun oil hung heavy in the air, a lingering reminder of the shop's former purpose. Just in the short time searching the shop they realized that the heavy smell of gun oil would be a problem.

"Let's keep looking," Samantha offered, the others quickly agreed.

As they carried on, William noticed the stone structure of the bank in front of them. Windows already barred and two doors that could easily be secured. "What do you think?" he asked pointing toward the building.

"Perfect," Samantha replied.

"Let's check it out," Sarah commented heading toward the doorway.

Despite the devastation, they soon realized that the bank's security measures remained intact. Heavy metal shutters covered the windows, while reinforced doors stood strong against potential intruders. The front door appeared to be slightly damaged but nothing that couldn't be repaired. Dusty nodded in approval, recognizing that the building's sturdy construction would provide them with much-needed protection against the dangers that lurked outside.

As Dusty looked over the building he mapped out a plan, There were two large offices at the back that would serve as bedrooms. The vault and the room in front could be their storage space. In addition another room to the side serve as storage for the wood they would need to collect to last them through the winter.

With a sense of relief, they set to work fortifying the building against potential threats. William and Samantha secured the doors and windows with heavy chains and padlocks, while Dusty and Sarah scoured the shop for supplies to reinforce their defenses. Broken windows were covered so that inside could be protected from the elements, they knew that along with zombies, cold and snow could also become killers if they were not properly prepared.

They set up shelving along the walls, organizing their supplies and weapons with meticulous care. Tools and equipment were neatly arranged, while any ammunition was stacked in a secure corner of the room.

In one corner of the main lobby, they installed their small wood-burning stove, its warmth would provide a welcome respite from the chill of the night air. William had made sure he brought the pieces of chimney pipe in their wagon. It allowed them to vent the smoke out though one of the windows allowing them to safely use it indoors. Nearby, they set up a makeshift kitchen area, complete with a propane stove for cooking and a collection of pots and pans salvaged from the ruins. The propane stove required extra care so it was uses sparingly but did give them the chance to enjoy a good meal from time to time.

In the back of the shop, they discovered a washroom equipped with a functioning sink and toilet—a rare luxury in their post-apocalyptic world. With a sense of gratitude, they set to work cleaning and stocking the room, grateful for the small comforts it provided. They would still use it sparingly as they knew the water could be used up at any time.

Two offices adjacent to the main lobby offered the perfect opportunity for makeshift bedrooms. Dusty and William claimed one office for themselves, while Samantha and Sarah took the other.

There was still daylight so Dusty, William, Samantha, and Sarah scoured the streets of the desolate city in search of a furniture store, their steps echoed loudly against the empty pavement. The once vibrant storefronts now lay abandoned and silent, their windows boarded up and their doors barricaded against the encroaching darkness.

After what felt like hours of fruitless searching, they finally stumbled upon a dilapidated furniture store nestled amidst the urban decay. The faded sign above the entrance bore the remnants of its former glory, the letters barely legible beneath a layer of grime and dust.

As they cautiously stepped inside, they were met with a scene of utter devastation. The interior of the store was a tangled mess of broken furniture and shattered glass, the remnants of a world torn apart by chaos and despair.

But amidst the wreckage, they soon spotted what they had come for - a row of sturdy beds tucked away in the corner of the showroom. Though the frames were scuffed and worn with age, they seemed to offer a glimmer of comfort amidst the desolation that surrounded them.

With a sense of relief, they set to work gathering the beds and loading them onto a makeshift cart. The mattresses, though threadbare and stained with age, still offered a semblance of cushioning against the hard wooden frames.

As they made their way back to their safehouse, the weight of the beds pressing down on their shoulders, they couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for the small comforts they had managed to salvage from the ruins.

Once back at their refuge, they wasted no time in setting up the beds in the makeshift bedrooms they had prepared. Dusty and William worked together to assemble the frames, their hands moving with practiced efficiency as they secured the pieces into place.

Meanwhile, Samantha and Sarah set about gathering pillows and blankets from the supplies they had amassed during their travels. Though the bedding was worn and faded with age, it offered a welcome respite from the cold stone floors of their makeshift shelter.

As the beds were made and the pillows fluffed, a sense of warmth and comfort filled the air—a fleeting reminder of the lives they had left behind, and the hope that still lingered amidst the ruins of their shattered world. And as they began to settle in for the night, their exhaustion outweighed by a sense of peace, they knew that they had found a moment of respite amidst the chaos of the apocalypse.

Drifting off to sleep, the soft glow of the wood stove casting flickering shadows across the room, they knew that they had finally found a place they could call home - a sanctuary from the horrors that lurked outside, and a beacon of hope in a world consumed by darkness. At least for today.
