Chapter 42 - Hunter.(2)

'Once again, I'm lost. Happens everytime I go to a new world. I need to learn about it's intricacies as fast as possible.'

As he stood atop the building, he could see the small blue particles that floated around in the sky slowly start to make their way towards him.

"Hm?"

Some of them landed onto his skin and sunk into his body, causing a warm feeling to rush through him.

Kenjaku was confused at this new development. What was this energy?

Looking down on the crowd below with a more focused gaze, the Six Eyes revealed something he should have grasped the moment he got here.

Those particles had already been absorbed by everyone there, but the amount they could store within their bodies was different. Especially when it came to those who were fighting the golem from earlier.

The particles within them were astronomically higher than any normal person there, to the point that a normal person couldn't even harm them by any means.

"How...interesting. I wonder, what do the mortals of this world call these particles?"

Kenjaku's eyes flickered around the area, taking a deeper, better look at everything he came saw.

That was when he laid his eyes upon something that made his cells go crazy.

The corpses of two strange beasts.

Beasts covered in flesh and filled with blood.

His vision went red as his entire body sent a certain signal to his brain, which triggered a primal hunger, a deep overwhelming sense of starvation from every cell in his body.

Kenjaku didn't waste any more time watching and waiting. He promptly jumped off of the building, grabbed the two large corpses and ran up the side of the same building, returning to his spot.

He was like a wild predator that had been starved for weeks.

The moment he touched the rooftop, he smashed both of them into the floor, destroying their bodies and absorbing their biomass.

"Urgh!"

Memories of another world and the lives of both creatures surged into his mind, filling it with everything they experienced throughout their lifetimes.

Their skills, powers and even their very forms belonged to him.

"I see...I see. This is indeed better, and faster than my soul absorption. I had thought I transcended hunger a millenia ago...but it seemed the way this virus acts is different. Other than that...I've gained some information about this world...and where these creatures come from."

Outstretching his arm, his biomass surged over it, forming a thicker, more grotesque arm, complete with a seemingly metal claw at the end of it.

This was the claw of one of the creature's he just consumed.

"Roger...oh Roger. You know me all too well to bestow an ability like this upon me."

Turning his arm back to normal, Kenjaku took another look at the particles floating around.

"The creatures call this energy, Mana, in their language. I wonder if it's the same for the humans. Sigh..."

Kenjaku didn't even know where to go in this city. He had no home, no acquaintances nor friends in this world. It was just him.

'I'll figure out the intricacies of everything out later...for now, I need to find a place to stay. Don't think the rooftops are gonna work for long. Let's see...how do I go about this...?'

Looking at the civilians on the ground, Kenjaku noticed that there were soldiers around them, making sure they couldn't go past a certain perimeter.

At the same time, he noticed soldiers who were separated from the rest patrolling the perimeter, making sure that there weren't any civilians stuck within the debris.

'I'll try questioning one of them.'

WHOOSH!

Jumping off the rooftop, Kenjaku leaped around the area from place to place until he found a soldier that was isolated from the rest.

This soldier was leaning on the wall, smoking a cigarette, scrolling through his phone, completely unaware of his surroundings.

Kenjaku landed quietly, not far behind the man and laid a hand on his shoulder.

"Huh?! Who are you?! Where did you come from?"

The soldier was about to raise his gun at Kenjaku, but when he actually got a good look at the man, he breathed a sigh of relief. A sheepish smile appeared on his face as he said, "Whew! You must be a hunter! Forgive me, friend! I was just startled by your sudden appearance!"

The soldier quickly stomped on his cigarette and saluted, shouting, "I'll have to escort you to the safe zone, sir! There was a dungeon break earlier and the hunters on site are already taking care of the threat! It is required that you-"

Interrupting him, a pensive look appeared on Kenjaku's face as he responded, "You mean that stone monster? It's already taken care of. I just wanted to know if there was a uhh...Hunter's Organization around here? I got lost and it's a bit hard for me to find directions."

The soldier was surprised as he heard this. But that surprise quickly turned into panic.

"Wait, it's already destroyed?! Dammit! That means that sergeant is...! Shit! Hunter-nim, I need to leave! If you're looking for the Hunter's Association, it's located in the Guro district of Seoul! Biggest building there! Can't miss it! I need to go!"

The soldier frantically ran away, clutching his weapon as he tried to find his squad.

"Heh, what an energetic guy. So...he said the Guro district huh? I wonder..."

After several minutes of jumping across buildings and asking questions to civilians he met, he finally found his way to the Hunter's Association.

A gigantic building that was practically erupting with Mana.

Hands in his pockets, Kenjaku waltzed into the building, calmly going through security before walking up to the front desk.

A beautiful black haired combed her hair back and said, " Hi! Good night! How may I help you?"

With a flat tone, Kenjaku responded, "I'd like to be a Hunter, please."

The woman raised an eyebrow.

"You mean, you want to submit an application for a Hunter's License?"

Snapping his fingers at the woman's quick response, Kenjaku continued, "Exactly! How can I do that?"

The woman pulled out an application and a pen, responding, "Fill this out, sir. When you're done, we'll take the next steps."

After a few minutes, Kenjaku turned in the application to the woman and the two walked into a separate room not too far away.

"Take a seat and someone will see you in a bit, sir. Good luck on your evaluation!"

It didn't take long for someone to call him in. When Kenjaku entered the room, he saw a few people standing hustling around, calling to a man who had just left the room the woman was leading Kenjaku too.

'From their conversations, they seem to be recruiting for different guilds. Interesting.'

Walking into the room, the woman instructed Kenjaku to lay his hands upon a giant black ball.

"Oh! What's your name?"

Kenjaku responded with his name, and placed his hand on the ball, waiting for the woman to give a result.

"Erm...D-rank. You may exit the room now, sir. Your license will be ready at the front desk."

Kenjaku, a little surprised by his rank, left, walked past the guilds trying to recruit him and stopped at the front desk, hoping to grab his license immediately.

Surely enough, the woman already had it prepared and Kenjaku collected it, smiling as he held it within his hands.

'Finally making some leeway into this world eh?'

Just as he was about to leave, an idea popped up in his mind.

Instead of leaving to the rooftops again, he could try to find other hunters to enter what this world called a 'Gate'. In this gate was a dungeon filled with monsters of varying levels.

All of this information was present on the application so ignorant Hunters, like Kenjaku, would be able to understand exactly what they were signing up for.

'Hm...there's a computer here. I remember them mentioning a site on the application...'

Kenjaku sat down and ran through a forum that Hunter's frequented, looking for an easy request. Something that would just be a tutorial on what a dungeon is like.

Soon enough, Kenjaku found what he was looking for.

"They just need people to fill in spots huh? Then, I'll tag along. Maybe I might meet some warriors that look like they're actually worth something there."

Kenjaku contacted the one who put out the request and he said that they would meet at the Gate the next day.

That was good enough for him. Now he wasn't running around like a headless chicken in this world.

He finally got some direction.

Unbeknownst to him though, he was about to be in for an interesting surprise the next day.
