With a gasp Kenji phased out of another pile of rubble towing another group of survivors behind him with his chain. Kenji's forehead was dripping with sweat while his body trembled with involuntary spasms. Gritting his teeth Kenji tried to push aside the bubble of nausea and vertigo that had slowly been growing stronger over time, 'Can't give up…not yet…people need my help.'
[Kenji…you need to stop, your body isn't ready to tolerate this much strain]
'I thought you said that getting rid of Lucifer's influence would make me stronger?' Kenji retorted as he stood up straight and looked around searching for another pile of rubble to search through.
[Your soul is still recovering from the trauma, it needs time to recover. But at the rate you'll only injure it further and damage to the soul is not something that time and rest can recover.]
'I guess that sucks for me then,' Kenji replied and he went to take a step only for his world to list to the side as everything below his waist went numb.
"Woah easy there man," Instead of hitting the ground Kenji felt a pair of arms catch him before hauling him upright, "You've been going pretty hard, I think it's time you took a break."
Kenji tried to push Honenuki away only for him to tighten his grip and hold Kenji in place, "What are you doing…there are people that need our help."
"Right now in your current state, you can't help anyone man. You can barely stand upright." Honenuki replied only for Kenji to fight back even harder, "You're wrong I can still help…I have to!"
Honenuki frowned, "Alright, then why are you still here? If you really wanted to, you could phase through me."
Kenji ground his teeth together in frustration as his glowing eyes flared, "Let me go Honenuki…or I'll make you."
Honenuki let out a long sigh as his face fell, "Sorry man, I can't do that."
Kenji opened his mouth to respond only for something small and hard to jam into his temple before sending a concussive wave rippling through his head.
Honenuki grunted as he caught Kenji's limp form as he passed out, "You positive whatever you did won't leave any lasting damage?"
"Pretty sure, I just made his brain vibrate a bit. He'll wake up in a few minutes." Jiro replied as her earphone jack retracted from Kenji's temple, "Did you talk to Ida?"
Honenuki nodded as he knelt down and positioned Kenji onto his back before standing back up, "Yeah, Todoroki and Awase finally got the buildings stabilized and the paramedics are already inside helping people out."
Jiro nodded as she glanced over at the sole group of buildings still standing, which were now coated in a thick layer of ice and massive pillars of cobbled together rubble that had no right looked as stable as they did "I almost didn't expect them to pull it off."
"We all have to rise to the occasion at some point," Honenuki muttered as they started walking back to the area that had been labeled base camp.
"Some more than others," Jiro replied as she glanced at Kenji who was sleeping peacefully as Honenuki carried him, "What was it like by the way…being stuck in the nest?"
"Terrifying, but I had it easy," Honenuki answered with a nervous smile, "If it really came down to it, I could have just left everyone behind and escaped."
"But you didn't," Jiro countered and Honenuki nodded after a second, "Still doesn't change the fact."
"What about Kenji, couldn't he just phase out of there?" Jiro asked as she pointed her thumb at Honenuki's improvised backpack.
"Nah, he only got that ability after we escaped, which only makes what he did scarier," Honenuki replied with a shake of his head.
Jiro raised an eyebrow, "Mind explaining?"
"Well I don't know what exactly his quirk does, but he can create these robes, and I think they make him invincible, or at least really hard to knock down," Honenuki answered with a far away look in his eyes, "He's pretty good with that chain of his as well, basically he just acted like a shield for the rest of us. Even when things were getting pretty dire."
"So he let ants gnaw on him," Jiro commented before looking back ahead, "Sure he's not a masochist?"
"I don't want to find out."
---
Waking up with a groan, Kenji opened his eyes to stare up at the open sky above him, "D-did I pass out?"
[No you were knocked out and rightfully so]
Kenji grunted as he tried to sit up only for his head to scream out in protest, 'What did they use, a comically large hammer?'
[You weren't listening to reason, so they took drastic measures]
'I was being an ass but I don't think I deserved this,' Kenji bemoaned as he sat up slowly before trying to stand up.
[What are you doing?]
'What does it look like, I'm getting back out there.' Kenji snapped back only to pause in a half kneeling position as his vision started to swim, 'Damn Jiro really did a number on me.'
[You do realize that you were forced into an impossible decision]
Kenji paused as he inhaled through his nose before rising to his feet, 'Doesn't change the fact that my actions, even if indirectly probably killed over a thousand people. Can't just sit around and do nothing.'
[Foolish boy you can barely stand on your feet. This isn't the time to play white knight in shining armor]
Looking around Kenji saw that he was in some kind of tent with mats on the floor and a table in the middle stacked with water and provisions. Shuffling over Kenji snatched a bottle of water and greedily gulped down the life-giving liquid.
[You do realize this is exactly what he wants]
Kenji paused before shaking his head and continuing to walk forward, 'Shut up, stop trying to distract me.'
[Oh is this your little vigilante arc…shouldn't you know by now that never goes well?]
Kenji froze for a long moment before a smile spread across his lips and he laughed, 'How the fuck do you know about that? Aren't you an ancient eldritch god?'
[You're my vessel, I know everything you do]
"Well that's a bit creepy," Kenji admitted with a sigh before he seemed to collapse on himself as his shoulders slumped, "I can't believe that's what made me snap out of it."
[Well don't indulge in your self pity for too long, even if you can use your quirk for a while there are other ways to help.]
