I opened my eyes and tried to turn, but couldn't. I looked at the surface in front of me and sighed. He came. I relaxed my head on his chest and let myself believe for a minute that what follows won't be that bad.
"Poppy," I called.
"Are you awake?" he asked, and I hummed, trying to move away, but it was pointless.
"Let go," I said, and he did. I stood up and moved as far away from him as was best. I didn't want my resolve to be shaken now.
"Did something happen?" he asked, and I crossed my arms over my chest.
"Why didn't you tell me that you had a fiancée?" I asked, and he froze. So he's not denying it.
"I thought about it, and I don't want to be that person who gets in the way," I continued. "I think it's best if we stay away from each other from now on. I don't want any…" I paused and looked away momentarily to avoid tearing up. "Any…" I croaked. "Misunderstandings," I finished.
