The old man fell weakly into a pool of blood.
Reno aimed his gun at the two women. "Where's the freezer room?"
A black female doctor replied, "At the end of the corridor. Please spare us. We were just following orders, everything was arranged by Dr. Zolent."
Zolent was the old man who had just died. If Reno were from the medical field, he would know that the man he had just killed was a distinguished recipient of the highest honor in New Federation medicine.
But Reno didn't know, and even if he did, he wouldn't care.
He shook his gun and said, "Lead the way."
The five of them walked out of the room in a line.
As they reached the corridor, they all recoiled at the pile of corpses in the hall.
The blue-haired female doctor glanced at the werewolf and whispered, "Poor Charlie, he's finally free now."
A white male doctor beside her frowned. "That monster killed so many of us, and you still sympathize with him?"
"He's the monster we created," the female doctor replied. "It's not Charlie's fault; we turned him into this."
"Of course, you don't blame him, because you're friends with him," the black female doctor sneered.
Another male doctor with glasses said, "Jenny, you don't need to target Sarah like this. You should know that because of her, we survived."
The black female doctor fell silent immediately.
Reno asked the man with glasses, "You said you survived because of her?"
"Oh, yes." Glasses looked a bit nervous under Reno's questioning and hurriedly replied, "Charlie was Sarah's responsibility. She treated him well. You see, the experiments with the transformation gene sometimes caused the subjects pain, and whenever that happened, Sarah would comfort Charlie. She's the kindest doctor in the hospital, Mr. Reno. I know you have some grievances against us, and we've done some questionable things, but we're not without humanity. Whenever possible, we try to help them."
The doctor named Sarah looked embarrassed. "Lanley, you don't have to do this. I just did what I had to do..."
But Reno's brow furrowed slightly. "Them? You just said them?"
Eyes widened, Glasses replied, "Yes, what's wrong?"
"Are you saying there's more than one transformed person in this hospital?"
"Of course." Glasses answered, "Experiments can't have just one subject."
"Where are the other transformed people?"
"They're all locked in cages." Glasses replied, "Don't worry, the cages are made of alloy. They can't escape."
"But what if someone outside lets them out?"
"That's impossible. Who would do that?" Glasses shook his head.
Then he stopped in his tracks, frozen in place.
Everyone's faces turned pale.
The blue-haired doctor Sarah groaned, "Charlie... Oh, God, he wouldn't do this, would he?"
"I think we'll find out soon." Reno stopped and looked around.
The corridor was quiet.
But upon closer listening, faint rustling sounds could be heard from somewhere.
Initially vague, the sounds gradually became clearer.
The doctors didn't notice anything at first, but as they listened, they seemed to remember something, and their faces suddenly turned grim.
"No, no!" Glasses murmured, sweat appearing on his face, then rolling down drop by drop.
With guns in hand, Reno listened to the sound.
Very close!
But no signs of life were visible nearby.
Where was it exactly?
Reno was puzzled.
Suddenly, he looked up and saw a ventilation duct above.
"There!" he shouted loudly.
He fired his guns repeatedly at the ventilation duct.
Bang! Bang! Bang! Bang!
Silver bullets spun and drilled into the ventilation shaft.
"Hiss!" A piercing scream came from the duct.
Then, with a bang, smoke filled the air, and a person fell from above.
The person was gray-black all over, bald, looking slippery as if covered in mucus, with webbed fingers. As soon as he landed, he leaped up, dodging Reno's two shots and sticking directly to the ceiling, showing his teeth at Reno, revealing a bright red mouth.
Reno raised his gun to shoot again.
Bullets hit the person, splattering a few drops of blood.
The transformed individual let out a painful howl, quickly crawled on the ceiling for a few steps, and then suddenly jumped down. As he fell, he spat out a long, fiery tongue at Reno.
Reno rolled to the ground to dodge, and the long tongue recoiled, actually curling towards Glasses.
"Duck!" Reno yelled.
The long tongue coiled around Glasses' throat, pulling him forcefully upwards.
The lizard-like man swiftly retreated back into the duct, dragging Glasses along.
Glasses let out a heart-wrenching cry, fading away along the ventilation duct, gradually disappearing without a trace.
Everyone was stunned.
Reno put away his gun and ran forward quickly. "Hurry, to the freezer room!"
They all ran frantically towards the end of the corridor.
In the midst of their sprint, the wall suddenly exploded, creating a large hole.
Instinctively, Reno threw himself to the ground as a huge palm swept over his head, hitting the injured guard's head squarely.
Just one slap, and the guard's head shattered.
Red and white scattered together.
"Oh, my God!" The remaining three doctors screamed in terror together.
A massive figure emerged from behind the wall, resembling a giant bear.
"Oh, my God, it's Beppolga. He's been implanted with the berserk bear gene!" Blue-haired doctor Sarah exclaimed.
"Run!" Reno shouted, firing repeatedly at the emerging behemoth.
Bullets hit the bear-man, causing him to stagger backward a few steps, but not knocking him down, instead only infuriating him.
"Roar!" He roared in anger, shaking the place with deafening sound!
The tremendous noise made Reno's ears ring, unable to stand firm, he sat down on the ground, then he saw the bear-man lifting an alloy door.
Reno's pupils dilated.
Boom!
The alloy door flew towards Reno.
Just as the door was about to flatten Reno, as if an invisible hand grabbed the door, it suddenly stopped in mid-air.
This sudden and eerie phenomenon stunned the bear-man, showing an incredulous expression.
The flying alloy door then flew back, slamming into the bear-man, sending him flying out.
Reno got up from the ground and chased after the three doctors ahead.
The end of the corridor was already in sight, and the door to the freezer room was just ahead.
The three doctors ran frantically towards the door.
At that moment, a figure suddenly rushed out from the adjacent passage, darting like lightning and tackling the black female doctor.
In the blink of an eye, the three doctors were down to two. Turning back, they saw someone lying on the ground in the left corridor, gnawing at the black female doctor.
It turned its head and revealed a wolfish and fierce face.
"Francis!" Sarah exclaimed again.
She and the werewolf locked eyes, forgetting to flee for a moment.
At the same time, another white man rushed quickly towards the door, desperately pounding on it. Luckily, the door didn't need a key, a beam of light scanned over, emitting a low voice, "Identity confirmed, Dr. Beirut, welcome."
"Hurry!" Beirut shouted frantically.
The door slowly opened.
Before the door was fully open, Beirut dashed inside, closing the door behind him.
"No, Beirut!" Sarah saw him locking her out and cried out in despair.
She could open the door, but with this delay, she might not have a chance to open it anymore.
Ignoring her cries, Beirut closed the door heavily, leaning against it, breathing heavily.
A voice sounded in his ear, "Isn't this the esteemed Dr. Beirut? Why the rush? Are you looking for me?"
Turning around in astonishment, Beirut saw a woman standing not far from him.
Entirely crimson, she even had a pair of demonic blood-colored wings stretched behind her, floating in the air, smiling at him.
"Stephanie... Oh, God!" Beirut uttered a desperate groan.
In the corridor, Sarah heard a long and tragic scream coming from behind the door.
The scream was so eerie, so prolonged, then abruptly stopped.
Her heart trembled.
Turning back, she saw the werewolf Francis standing behind her.
Sarah felt utterly hopeless.
However, the werewolf glanced at her but didn't pounce. Instead, he retreated into the darkness, leaving only his deep green eyes still watching her, as if saying, "I remember you, Miss Sarah."
Sarah was stunned.
Just then, Reno rushed over like a whirlwind, his gun aimed at the werewolf.
Sarah's heart skipped a beat, and she shouted, "No, wait!"
What?
Reno was taken aback.
Swish!
The werewolf had already pounced, as fast as lightning. Before Reno could react, a slap knocked his gun away, and another wolf claw pressed against his chest, sending him flying.
The werewolf leaped up, opening his wolf mouth to bite Reno's throat.
"Don't kill him, he's not from the hospital!" Sarah yelled.
The werewolf's movement paused.
In the next moment, his body suddenly froze, as if something was choking his neck, and he flew backward.
Reno got up, staring at the werewolf intently.
At that moment, a sharp whistle sounded.
The whistle pierced Reno's eardrums like needles, causing him a headache.
"Ah!" Reno's mind loosened, unable to control the werewolf anymore, and he knelt on the ground.
A blood-red figure appeared on the ground, it was the winged woman from the freezer room.
There was still a trace of blood at the corner of her mouth, looking at Reno, she chuckled, "Wow, I see something interesting, a telekinetic. Are you one of those in the freezer room?"
"At least not one of yours," Reno replied, getting up.
Looking back at Sarah, he said, "You didn't tell me they could talk."
