Chapter 70 - Behind The Rabbit's Facade

Matt blinked a few times in shock as he didn't expect a question from the Dragoon. Did he truly hurt her feelings by rejecting her invitation again? No... The Loplin did what he had to. The Dragoon had no clue who Matt was or what he'd done...

If she ever found out, the Loplin could forget about being sent to Jesus, since she would send his soul straight to oblivion. Matt sighed as he went over to the sad Dragoon and placed a comforting hand on her head.

"Listen... I've got my own set of rules to follow because something bad happened the last time I was in this situation. I don't want you or me to get hurt over a misunderstanding, okay? Like what we promised, I will never hurt you... Cheer up, oki?" asked Matt, with a soft smile.

"Then why did you say that I have an ultimate goal?! You think that I'm trying to trap you?!" shouted Layla, as she had angry tears streaming down her cheeks.

The Loplin retracted his hands back in fear and guilt, regretting those few words.

"Don't think I don't know what you've done! I was being playful and wanted to get close to you, to prove that what the Ankou said was wrong! That he got the wrong rabbit... Because you are the nicest person I've met outside of Valokia."

"I thought maybe... Just maybe... You were a nice bunny..." sobbed the Dragoon as she looked down onto the bed and gripped the sheets tightly.

Mattheos felt his anger well up within his chest, ready to descend hell on the Grim Reaper before slowly realizing that it was his fault for misleading the poor girl.

"What... What did he tell you about me?" croaked Matt as he tried to get closer to Layla.

"That you were responsible for the extermination of Dragoons on the Eastern borders of Valokia. The Royal Guard sent out so many troops but none made it back alive because they were all killed by you. At least, my brother was spared from you..."

"Since the Ankou hasn't collected his soul yet," snuffled the little Dragoon as she tried to scoot away from the bunny.

Matt pretended to be surprised and felt guilt for doing such horrific acts towards Layla's kind. He knew he shouldn't have kept her from the truth but at the same time, he wondered if the Ankou was saying the truth.

Because the information coming from Layla wasn't the entire truth. Should he continue keeping the facade up and going with the flow that the Grim Reaper had created? Or should he correct the mistakes...

The Loplin then recalled his past before shaking the thought out of his head. No, he has to keep lying. For his sake. Maybe, if he could get Layla to punish him, the girl would have peace.

"That's why I told you I didn't want you to learn about my past. I'm not proud of it either but I had no choice. It was either that or seeing my family burned as fuel for the many citizens of my town. I had no choice... However," answered the remorseful bunny.

He then hopped in front of Layla and crouched, grasping her two trembling hands.

"My apologies don't justify the many lives I've taken... Thus, if you seek fit in punishing me for my actions then so be it. I am guilty and I can never go back in time to redo the wrongdoings of my past. Tears and begging won't do any help so I'd rather not put up a fight..."

"You can kill me if you want to."

As those words rang across her mind, the Dragoon's eye rings glowed with fury as she pushed the Loplin away.

"I could never. And I will never do so. Don't think that I am the same as all those, 'heroes of justice' or the ones who claim that they bring upon divine punishment. I am more hurt that you would think I had the same principal as those good-for-nothing freaks!"

"I am not them, nor will I ever think like them! It doesn't matter if you've killed before! It doesn't give me the right to kill you! It doesn't give anyone the right to rain judgment on anyone! They have their sins too, and so do I. "

"You served in the light of the Royal Guard of commonfolk while working in the darkest depths of the streets. Plus, what would be the point of killing you? More senseless killing, more bloodshed... More tears, more hearts broken..."

"There won't be any tears shed for me. And no one's heart would break because all those who had cared for me are no longer with me. I'm the only one left; my team, my family..."
