Chapter 47 - Beast Cubs

With their bodies and clothes in tatters, Elora staggered over to where Ryan lay on the ground. Their faces showed signs of exhaustion and weariness, but also a shared sense of accomplishment. Fluffy, seemingly unharmed on the outside but battered within, soon joined them.

The battleground bore the marks of their fierce clash, an area now in tatters, showing the remnants of a titanic magical duel.

Sincerely apologising for his uncontrollable frenzy during their fight, Ryan explained how the power of the mana ring had seemingly rendered him absentminded, yet in a state of perfect combat readiness. It was as if the ring had cleansed his thoughts, sharpened his senses, and provided an unwavering focus. Removing everything else other than his opponents and how to deal with them from his mind, the Mana Ring was incredible.

However, it left Ryan feeling guilty about his lack of restraint.

In response, Fluffy remained unperturbed, nuzzling Ryan affectionately as if to reassure him. Meanwhile, Elora, her vibrant eyes reflecting a mixture of amusement and pride, chimed in with a hint of jest, "It must just be a side effect of my amazing teaching."

Laughing, the trio, battered and bruised but in high spirits, shared a wholesome moment. And knowing what was coming, they valued it even more.

Seated cross-legged beside each other, Ryan and Elora embarked on their individual paths to recovery. Their appearances told tales of their recent confrontation, clothes tattered and faces etched with the marks of exertion.

Elora, adorned with the ethereal grace of the forest, tapped into the wellspring of nature mana surrounding her, accelerating the healing of her wounds. Her aura seemed to weave with the natural world as her magic worked in harmony with the environment. It wasn't merely herself that she healed; her soothing magic caressed the torn battleground, encouraging life to sprout forth, mending the once-devastated terrain.

Fluffy, a hulking presence, gave the impression of slumber. In reality, he was replenishing his mana reserves. Streams of mana swirled around him like an invisible whirlpool, cascading into his essence as he rejuvenated.

Ryan, on the other hand, was in the midst of an intricate operation. A whirling vortex of mana, controlled with precision, swirled around him like a shimmering maelstrom. This whirlwind wasn't consuming him but replenishing the mana reserve in his Mana Ring that he had exhausted during their final spar. Simultaneously, it stimulated his body's recovery as waves of mana flowed through his body into the ring on his left hand.

The very air around him seemed to vibrate with power as he quickly slipped into a contemplative state. He absorbed the mana like a sponge, deepening his connection to the Mana Ring that had played such a significant role in their battle, while also replaying the final spar in his mind.

His movements in what he called the 'Golden Battle State' were dissected in his mind, a dance of elegance and force, which he continued to learn from. The Ring's influence had unleashed a latent potential, turning his every gesture into an exquisite display of efficient, powerful magic. Though already impressive, the newfound insight was a revelation, elevating his mastery.

Then, after hours of meditative recovery and contemplation, Ryan wanted nothing more than to rest his mind. Finding a serene moment to do so, he nestled his head into Fluffy's plush, fur-covered belly. The embrace of slumber was gentle, wrapping around him like a warm, familiar blanket.

Hours slipped away like the quiet sigh of a breeze through the forest, and after Elora had mostly recovered, she had a solemn expression in her eyes but a warm smile on her face.

The reason for such a conflicted expression was their inevitable parting of ways. Fluffy, her companion since he was a cub, a silent stalwart friend, and Ryan, the stranger turned confidant of sorts, both held places in her heart. Yet it seemed inevitable for them to go their separate ways.

Her duty as guardian was fulfilled, no longer tethered to Odus's trial. Ryan had his world to return to. Meanwhile, Fluffy had a commitment that he couldn't ignore.

It was the reality of things, and accepting that, Elora observed their sleeping forms, enjoying the moment and waiting for them to wake up.

-

As the veil of slumber began to lift from Ryan's consciousness, he found himself bathed in the gentle glow of dawn's light, accompanied by the warmth of Elora's welcoming smile. It was a serene awakening. With fluid grace, he rose from his resting place, and even Fluffy stirred to life, a silent pact of unspoken understanding forming between the trio. The imminent farewell loomed, shrouding them in a peaceful atmosphere.

Before any words could disrupt the tranquillity, Fluffy's abrupt action altered the mood. Restless and eager to communicate his desire, the beast emitted muffled sounds, a unique blend of vocal cues and expressive body language. Elora and Ryan exchanged puzzled glances but eventually understood that it wished for them to follow.

Fluffy dashed forward, setting a rapid pace that urged his companions to match his speed. Elora, with the grace of her woodland heritage, leapt onto the great beast's back, while Ryan pursued alongside them, matching Fluffy's stride. The forest blurred around them as Fluffy and Ryan began to race.

The speed competition became a spirited exchange, with Ryan managing to stay shoulder-to-shoulder with Fluffy for a commendable duration. However, as the great beast unleashed its full sprint, Ryan found himself outpaced and left behind.

'If he moved as quickly as this during our spar...' Ryan was glad that Fluffy had held back as much as it did.

And, despite the growing distance between them, Ryan's Mana Vision allowed him to keep track of Fluffy's ethereal energy signature, acting like a celestial tether. He rapidly bridged the gap, catching up to Fluffy and Elora, who had reached a halt.

Upon doing so, a scene of astonishment greeted him. Another creature, one remarkably similar to Fluffy, but possessing a slender elegance rather than the rough-hewn exterior of his companion, came into view. This beast, with an appearance that seemed to resonate with a distinctive grace, was a female.

However, what truly captivated Ryan's attention were the three rambunctious cubs frolicking around their mother. One mirrored Fluffy's distinctive features, one was a near-mirror image of the female, and the third, a delightful amalgamation of both parents, displayed multicoloured fur.

The cubs, though small and fragile due to their recent birth, already exhibited an astonishing vitality, much to Ryan's amazement. Their budding yellow mana cores, though not yet fully developed, hinted at their future potential. They bypassed the status of Mundane Beasts at birth, reserved for creatures with red or orange mana cores, and boasted the power of Enhanced Beasts. Considering their current state, the prospect of their full-grown power was tantalizing.

As Ryan observed the cubs play, he couldn't help but wonder about what kind of beast Fluffy was. Meanwhile, the maternal protectiveness emanating from the female beast was unmistakable. It was clear that she had faced adversity with humanity, as apparent in her penetrating glare and the hint of killing intent that tinged the air as Ryan showed up.

Knowing how greedy and horrible humans could be to other creatures, Ryan could only imagine what the female beast had experienced. Nevertheless, he met the beast's unyielding gaze with a genuine smile, attempting to convey his goodwill. It was a silent negotiation, sealed with a gentle nudge of approval from Fluffy, vouching for Ryan.

Though the female beast's wariness subsided, her vigilance remained. Elora, her kinship with the natural world evident, was granted more immediate trust, a testament to the ancient bond between her people and the wilderness.

Together, they spent their fleeting moments in the presence of the cubs. With an unspoken acknowledgement that time was slipping through their fingers, they cherished the connection they had formed with the little ones, a fragile yet enduring bond that bore the weight of the impending separation...
