Chapter 10 - Pupa

Darkness was all that filled the dead world. Darkness wasn't the right word though, it was more like an absence. An emptiness that you could stare into forever and still not comprehend it. It would be the same as trying to describe death, not black but just... nothing. The only thing that filled the emptiness was a golden cocoon floating in the midst of the abyss. Suddenly, a grey arm breaks through the surface of the shell and it pulled the rest of its body out from the organic container. The being emerged and stood onto its two legs. It was Kevin but it was as if he was a new man. Deep orange markings coated his grey almost faded skin like cuts and his golden eyes now lacked the glow they once had. He stood up weakly but his body wasn't wounded, he stepped forward like a criminal would at the gallows. Kevin kept his head bowed and his gaze focused on the emptiness beneath him as he ran a hand through his disheveled black hair. He looked down at his new body and only sighed as he saw his grey chest marked with something new. An orange 'X' was made into his chest like a burn mark as if it was branded there as punishment. Kevin looked back up and at the void that surrounded him.

He stared into the abyss intently as if it spoke to him. "I'm sorry..." the immortal muttered as he waved his hand lazily and a golden portal opened in front of him. He hesitated for a moment as if he was recalling a distant memory and then stepped through the celestial gateway. A busy city appeared around him and he quickly snapped his fingers so clothes would hide his form. Kevin walked around in his new brown cloak and walked around aimlessly like a foreigner as he watched vehicles fly down the street and blue-skinned people eat in restaurants. His gaze fell upon a billboard showcasing a man with slick-black hair in a tailored suit. "Unfortunately, poverty levels and homeless population has not decreased but has still continued to rise. In others news-" Kevin sighed as the newsman moved onto another topic as if it was nothing, as if the news that people were starving in the street was just something normal to be skipped over. Kevin continued his journey through the busy city, simply slipping between crowds and busy streets telling himself to get a feel of the new world he was in. However, in all reality, all he could think of was his encounter with his brother.

A scream shot through his ears like a bullet and his attention quickly shot to a child and a woman presumed to be his mother backing up against a wall of an alleyway. Kevin's eyes shot to two men waving guns around and barking orders at the two unfortunate souls. Even though every world was different, it seemed that the same elements still lingered like a nasty plague. Kevin stood there for a moment judging the situation before him as the woman clutched her son's hand and with tears handed the criminals her purse. A part of him didn't want to hesitate, a part of him wanted to shoot forward like a rocket and force them to apologize. A part of him wanted to soar into the sky and alter this entire world to abide by basic decency. He knew however that he couldn't, He won't make that mistake, not again.

Kevin instead walked forward slowly and the child's eyes fell on him causing the criminals to turn and face him as well. "Back off! This is our prize tough guy." One of the crooks muttered without knowing that the man before him could wipe his life away in a moment. "Leave them alone." Kevin muttered lowly lacking his usual energy, his face still hidden from view beneath the shade of the night sky and the cloak wrapped around his body. "Oh yeah? What are you gonna do hero?" The other man mutters pushing his gun into Kevin's chest. Kevin's golden eyes meet the man and they glow with a familiar light before quickly diverting back to there usual coldness. "Here. Give the woman back her purse." Kevin mutters and he hands the man a stack of money. The man's eyes widen and the two muggers laugh. "You think giving us money is gonna make us go away? You must be rich to just give that much to us. How about a little more or will shoot all three of ya." The taller more greasier looking man says while flashing a golden smile.

"Now." Kevin says as his hand shoots up like a hungry snake and twists the man's arm just enough to hurt him as much as possible without breaking anything. "Woah Woah! You got a death wish?" The other criminal asks as he points his gun to Kevin's head. "Yeah.. Hands off pal..." The taller one says as he winces in pain. "Fine. Hands off." Kevin says as he lets go and just as the other man lowers his guard for a mere second he kicks them both into the trash bin. Kevin then reaches into his pants to pull out guns that were there before. He points them at the two wincing men. "Drop the guns and give back her purse." He says sternly.
