Yeongsu wasn't sure why, but he was almost confident that what Hanwoo was accusing the foreign woman of wasn't true. It had to be a misunderstanding. He looked around the group and saw that Kittichai also didn't seem to be suspicious of her, maybe he believed her as well. Yeongsu didn't know why it bothered him to see all the other people of the group look at her accusingly. She seemed like she had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. After all, why would the person who caused this mess, help them? Yeongsu knew she had helped save Jiwon, and also helped them when they were on the street. If she had caused it, she could've just let Jiwon be thrown out of the train. She also could've just stayed on the train where it was safer, but the foreigner had gone out of her way to help them, so it wouldn't make sense for her to be one of the people who caused it.
Unconsciously, he made his way towards the confrontation and stood idly by as she reached into her backpack. As she pulled out the evidence a couple papers fell out of her hand that she had accidentally grabbed with the clipboard. Yeongsu picked them up and examined them. They were drawings of people. The first drawing looked like one of Jiwon's professional photos from his modeling and the other looked like one of himself. He stared at the drawing for a moment, it was a very detailed drawing of him sleeping on the train. He scanned over the paper amazed, his eyes came to a halt over her name which was neatly written in cursive at the bottom of the page. Yeongsu wasn't good at English, but could still read her name; Sawyer Kayzhen.
"Is this me and Jiwon-ssi?" Yeongsu asked his thoughts out loud as he stared at the drawing of himself. The mention of his name made the blonde step forward and look over his shoulder curiously. She turned her attention to the papers Yeongsu held after she gave the detective the clipboard. He noticed a slight blush crossed her face as her eyes landed on the paper he was staring at.
"I like to draw people." Yeongsu watched as she gave him a timid smile, holding her hand out for the papers, which he respectfully returned.
"Hey, look at this?" Hanwoo passed the clipboard to Seojun hastily. Yeongsu turned his gaze to Seojun as he flipped through the pages.
"They were trying to make a biological warfare weapon to sell to the government." Seojun stated. "Most of the test subjects were a failure. Test results: Bite wounds and scratches spread the parasite. Discovery made: they were blind, but extremely sound oriented. When they bite a living human they become different. They were slower, but could see." Seojun said. Everyone remained silent, they probably weren't sure what to say. Kittichai was the first to speak as he moved to peeked over Seojun's shoulder.
"So they are really like-" Kittichai started.
"Zombies... so instead of an illness or chemical, it's a parasite?" Taehyun finished.
Seojun then continued reading. "Types of adaptations discovered: Three. Cure: unknown. Turn time: varies."
"So if there isn't a cure then it's fine to kill them?" Jiwon questioned shakily, "but if a cure is later discovered does that make us murderers?"
Yeongsu noticed that Minseok and Taehyun exchanged thoughtful looks while the rest looked at their feet at the heavy question.
"No, it doesn't." Kittichai stepped forward and put his hand on Jiwon's shoulder. "How could we have known that there would be a cure later? They can't label you a murderer for surviving." He smiled warmly at the blonde. "If you can't do it, let me do it for you." Yeongsu could tell how protective Kittichai was of the model, it didn't take a genius to figure that much out.
"What does it mean by adaptations?" Yeongsu couldn't help but ask.
"I'm not quite sure." Seojun furrowed his brows.
"Can I see?" Hina asked.
"Be my guest." Seojun handed her the clipboard.
Hina visibly scanned over the pages before speaking, "It is saying that they were injected with a parasite, in order to survive the parasite needs a host."
"A host? So like it controls the body and takes over?" Taehyun questioned.
"Exactly, it says here that the original form was named the strider. The parasite adapted to a host for the first time. These forms are only made through injecting the parasite, the strider type is blind and relies heavily on hearing and they move fast." Hina read the details. "Second adaptation is known as the stalker type. They can see and hear, but they move slowly and only lunge when in close proximity to their target."
"That's what I dealt with at the train station, along with dogs." Kittichai stated.
"The ones that I dealt with after the explosion were the strider type." Hanwoo added.
"The third adaptation is known as the runner. They run fast and can see when it is bright out, but not when it is dark. They are pretty reliant on sound though due to their lack of sight in the dark." Hina described the three adaptations.
"Well if Kittichai ran into infected dogs, a canine type, then that would make a fourth adaptation?" Taehyun questioned.
"Not only a fourth, but the type of creatures here in Daegu are not the same as what we experienced in Busan which makes a fifth adaptation." Sawyer added.
"By the way Hina-ssi, how did Daegu become infected, do you know?" Seojun asked Hina. She went pale at the question and sat down on her bed.
"I was working when it happened..." She started, her leg started bouncing as she spoke.
"You don't have to say it right now if it is too much." Stated Seojun in a soothing tone.
"A man came into the hospital with a dog bite, he was running a high fever. The doctor gave him rabies shots and some medication. The man seemed like he was getting better. The doctor had told me he was running a high fever of 42.5 degrees Celsius. I wasn't in charge of that particular patient, I was tending to a different patient at the time so I don't know all the details." Hina continued. "After the shots and medication his fever began to go down really quickly. It dropped all the way down to a low 33 degrees Celsius. He must've died somehow because when I returned there were two of those lurkers. The one lurker was the doctor who was treating the patient and he chased after my colleague. The other lurker that was the dog bite patient was cornering the second doctor, so I threw something at it. It chased me, but I locked it inside the building. I really am unsure of how it spread to the rest of the city."
"We're doomed." Yongrae muttered quietly from the back of the room.
"Wait!" Hina suddenly exclaimed, making a few of the group member's jump. "The paper says that it spreads by scratches as well as bites?"
Seojun nodded in response, which led to Hina face palming herself.
"The lurker scratched my colleague, he must've gone home and attacked..." she trailed off, letting a heavy silence fill the room.
"We should rest up for the night, with the situation we will need to wake up bright and early." Hanwoo clapped his hands as a way to lighten the mood.
"EHH, No way, I hate mornings!" Yeongsu groaned unenthusiastically. It was true he hated waking up early, but as a fireman he was used to it.
"Deal with it Yeongsu-hyung." Hanwoo chuckled.
"Hina, where should we sleep?" Minseok questioned.
"Ah, I have the key to the apartment across from me so if some of you would like you can stay over there." She responded.
"How do you have the other apartments... never mind it doesn't matter, I'll separate us into two groups okay?" Hanwoo stated. Yeongsu watched as the detective looked around the room carefully examining the group. "This is your apartment Hina-ssi so you obviously stay, which means the foreign girl should also stay here. You are the only girls after all."
"I go by KZ." The foreign girl finally told the group what to address her by.
"I think Yongrae-sunbae should stay here." Jiwon pointed out the tall man who remained silent most times.
"I think Hanwoo-ssi and I should remain here." Seojun finished the groups. Yeongsu knew it was the most reasonable way to solve it. A room with two women, a man who just lost his wife, and two cops staying in the same room is more reasonable than having other guys stay with the women. All the guys knew it was the most logical option as well. Kittichai got the key from Hina and led the group of guys to the apartment across the hall for the night...
