"Splash!"
The sound of water arose.
Carson Flores didn't open his eyes; he had grown accustomed to the sound of the little creature from across the way diving into the water to catch its prey every day.
During his rest times, Carson had measured and found this deep pool to be much deeper than he had imagined. Presumably, there were plenty of fish in it. He had seen that little creature emerge from the water with a fish thirty or forty centimeters long in its mouth before quickly disappearing into the overgrown grass.
Lilly Compton had described the little one as resembling an otter, but after Carson saw it, he thought it looked more like a mink, although there wasn't much difference in appearance between the two.
"Woosh!"
"Woosh!"
The sound of splashing continued intermittently. Carson opened his eyes and picked up a flashlight, shining it towards the water's surface.
