Chapter 36 - Her past

"Bored."

"So what do you want me to do then? Fight with you?" Albert rubbed his chin and found it somewhat amusing.

Dennis looked at Albert. A hint of ink-colored ripples appeared in his deep gaze, as if lost in thought. "It's been six years since we last met privately."

Albert was slightly startled, his expression not quite natural. He put on a handsome face and coldly said, "When enemies meet, jealousy is inevitable."

Dennis, upon hearing this, gently brushed his two thick eyelashes down and caught a faint afternoon sunlight. He asked, "Do you consider me as your enemy?"

"We might have become enemies as early as when Emma had her car accident."

Six years ago, many things happened. Among them was his relationship with Dennis.

"Do you like Emma?" Dennis pondered for a long time before asking. This question had been buried in his heart for many years.

"Of course."

However, he thought about it and felt that it was not appropriate. So he added another sentence, inadvertently exposing others as well: "My liking for Emma is the same as yours. Frank's liking for Emma is love."

"Oh, so that's how it is."

No wonder Frank tried to kill him last night, almost piercing his heart.

Albert saw Dennis looking pale and exhausted, with bloodstains all over his shirt. He asked in confusion, "Are you injured?"

"Not much, really. Just got stabbed." Dennis said casually. Compared to what happened six years ago, this is nothing significant.

"Is it Frank?"

"You have no reason to lose to Frank. Whether it's in skill or love."

This is not a compliment, but a fact. Within the entire Vampire Hunter Bureau, and even in the international community today, there are very few people who can defeat Dennis. Albert firmly believes in this.

"Probably. By the way, I will be promoted next month," Dennis changed the topic and conveyed some good news.

Albert couldn't help but laugh, but he still maintained his dignified elegance and said, "From lecturer to associate professor? Congratulations on your promotion."

"No, what I wanted to say is..." Dennis paused for a moment before slowly speaking up, "The teacher suggested that I research the vampire clan."

"Is this true?" The smile on Albert's face froze suddenly.

He suddenly saw the figure of a woman in his mind. Once, that woman told him her name was Helen.

"Do you know about this?" Dennis frowned, a ripple of concern appearing in the depths of his tea-black eyes. If Albert had known about this all along, then things would be more complicated.

Albert shook his head, snapped out of his thoughts, and said, "A month ago, my teacher asked me if I was interested in investing in a research project."

"What are your thoughts?" Dennis asked earnestly.

Albert said indifferently, "Investing is like gambling. Fortunately, my family has a lot of capital."

"Sure. Alright." Dennis paused for a few seconds, stood up, and walked towards the front desk to pay.

Albert got up and caught up with Dennis, saying, "Are you in such a hurry to pay the bill because you're afraid I'll drink all your money?"

"Do you have that ability?" Dennis remembered that Albert's tolerance for alcohol was not good. At least, not as good as his.

"Poor miser." Albert muttered. He seemed to have completely forgotten his purpose for coming.

"Would you like to come with me to the hospital to visit Emma?" Dennis invited proactively.

"Sure. I haven't visited her in a long time anyway." Albert accepted the invitation.

"Didn't you say you liked Emma?" Dennis implied that Albert's liking was too perfunctory.

"What do you understand? Do you have to meet if you like someone? You can also keep it in your heart." Albert adjusted his sunglasses and walked into the flower shop next to the cafe.

Dennis drove past the coffee shop. Albert was choosing a bouquet of flowers. It was a bunch of pink tulips, symbolizing beauty and happiness.

.....

In the hospital, the smell of disinfectant is always so strong. The corridor is bathed in gentle light, creating a peaceful atmosphere.

Dennis and Albert walked out of the elevator and headed towards Emma's high-level nursing ward.

A mixed-race teenager wearing a white casual top and blue jeans walked towards them. The teenager had vibrant orange hair, exuding a confident aura.

On a youthful face filled with sunshine, there is a hint of warm smile. His right arm is wrapped in thick gauze. It seems that he has suffered a serious injury and cannot move easily for the time being.

"Frank?"

Albert called out the name of the young boy. However, the boy ignored him and didn't stop walking.

"What's going on?" Albert couldn't help but be surprised. Frank wasn't like this before.

Frank pursed his lips tightly, looking down on everything. He held his head high and straightened his rigid back as he strode past Dennis and Albert, leaving in long strides.

Albert looked at Frank's receding figure and fell silent for a moment. Holding a bouquet of flowers, he asked in confusion, "What happened between you and Frank yesterday?"

Dennis's thin lips tightened slightly as he spoke softly, "I was stabbed by him with a knife."

Albert shook his head helplessly, this is too heartbreaking.

"Let's go and visit Emma," Dennis said, walking towards the ward.

In the hospital room, James went out for lunch and has not returned yet. A nurse is currently measuring Emma's vital signs, and the results show everything is normal. Emma has once again successfully passed the critical period.

Nurses first registered the identities of Dennis and Albert, then gave them some nursing knowledge before leaving with their instruments.

Albert placed the tulips in a vase and placed it on the bedside table. There quietly resting, was a bouquet of lilies, Emma's favorite flowers, presumably brought by Frank.

On the hospital bed, Emma is wearing a ventilator, her body relaxed and peacefully asleep. The electrocardiogram constantly records her heartbeat, which is steady and regular, just like that of an ordinary person.

In her early years, at the age of two, Emma moved to Star City with her parents. Unfortunately, less than half a year later, her parents passed away in a fire accident. She was supposed to be sent to an orphanage. However, for some reason unknown, Dennis's parents adopted her.

Emma walked into the courtyard for the first time and saw Dennis. At that moment, Dennis was standing on the balcony, holding a small wooden sword in his arms. He had a cold expression and a distant attitude, looking down at Emma from above with indifference.

Emma was immediately attracted to Dennis. She wiped her mouth and embarrassingly drooled two lines of milk-flavored infatuation saliva.

Since then, no matter where she is or what she is doing, her heart always lingers on that cold and stunning young man, never forgetting him.

At the age of thirteen, Emma experienced her first menstrual period. She was so scared that she hid in her room and cried all night, fearing that she would bleed to death.

After Dennis learned about this matter, he not only bought her essential items but also made a sweet bowl of honey water for her. She finally passed the most fearful step in her life and successfully transformed from a cocoon to a butterfly.

At the age of sixteen, Emma was young and naive, with her first taste of love. She wanted to learn from other girls and also write a love letter to the boy she admired.

However, when Dennis found out about this, he immediately went to her grade. Dennis gathered everyone and asked them to help keep an eye on his sister and prevent her from puppy love....

Er, puppy love...

Emma can only compromise. However, if Dennis knew that the person she has fallen in love with is himself, would he still prevent her from dating early?

However, just as Emma was about to give the love letter, a car accident occurred. Emma managed to push Dennis away in time, but she herself fell under the wheels of the car.

She paid an extremely high price for it. She lay in the hospital bed for a whole six years. It was such a long period of time. Long enough to make her forget herself.

She was puzzled. She wondered whether she was still alive or had already died...
