Chapter 18 - Carl, the Rookie

The scarred man gave up after a while and looked at him in silence. He could see the pale face that became whiter and whiter. There was no desire to continue fighting, no after what happened. The cuts were too precise and reminded the man of previous injuries. Opponents all stronger then him. There was also a message. Make up a story or the next time, it won't just be a penetration. It wasn't the determination or vigilance in his eyes. There was none. What scared the scarred man was the lack of caring in the depths of his eyes, as though everything that happened was inconsequential and previously foreshadowed.

The man signaled at the woman to return and leave. Only after he left though. He stood there for a while and looked at Megan eventually. She only nodded her head as though she understood what had happened. These two people were in fact bad people. Maybe they were more debt collectors sent to collect some payment. She stared at the woman in case the woman wanted to try something but all the woman did was wait until he left before going for her partner and helping the scarred man into the car. The two didn't even look at them and left in the opposite direction, back to their boss maybe. No, definitely. They had to report the result immediately.

He just stood there and took in the fresh air. After what seemed like ages, she stepped out of the car and hugged him. She could tell a war was coming and she wanted to support him. She probably wouldn't be of much help, but she could call her father if things got way too out of control.

She would never have to do that though, because he had planned it perfectly in his head. If they were persistent, and he knew they would be, he would either be killing many people or fatally crippling most of them. Then the FBI would get called and he would meet with them and they would offer him a job. He would reject based on principles and then they would give him contracts that suited him. That's exactly how it happened to Henry Ruthless and he didn't expect it to be different. Path of Ruthlessness was based on a true story with exaggerated main character, not exaggerated plot.

Henry Ruthless was always right so Henry Smith was actually looking forward to it. There was a certain individual he wanted to match up Henry Ruthless against. The only question was whether this would happen before or after the debt collector's boss was killed.

The problem was that he was a kid. Looked and presented too much as a kid. They couldn't send a kid onto such missions even if he was an adult. The FBI would have a complicated situation to ponder in a few days. Was Ruthless right or were the FBI's caution right?

Blair greeted Megan at the gate. Not enthusiastic but hopeful instead. Dressed in a long overcoat with an ankle low dress inside, the woman seemed to be dressed as though ready to go but her demeanor suggested someone who hated social events. Looked at him as though he was an unwanted guest but said nothing. Gestured both of them to come inside and walked through a long garden as they followed right behind.

The actual house was rather small due to the unexpectedly huge garden. Or maybe Blair specifically ordered the house to be built small to accommodate it. A hobby, maybe? There were so many different fruits and vegetables that were meticulously that it seemed most likely. Maybe her work? But she was an electrical engineer. Was she trying to harness plants to generate natural energy? However, that would depend heavily on the seasons and it was impossible to rely on such a method. Was there a way to ensure a stable environment?

"I can tell your friend is very observant. The soil is encased in glass in a system carefully managed by a supercomputer on the first floor"

She whispered to him that Blair was rarely talkative about her work. She was clueless about the supercomputer and the soil and the glass. She looked at him like he was some kind of blessing. He didn't tell her that she was his blessing.

It was seven when they opened the front door to something that was larger then a house but smaller then a mansion. There was just one maid, a cook, an engineer, five electricians working round the clock, and a butler who managed them all. The cook was only paid for eight in the morning to ten at night and she rarely cooked. The petite lady mostly just stuffed herself on permission from Blair and read books and watched the guests. The engineer was an electrician who got paid twice and the other four were literally students from a nearby college interning for a brilliant engineer.

The butler was actually one of her peers who had a weird habit of pretending to work for Blair. He was an old man that managed the maid and ignored the cook. Preferred to cook his own food. He was the host every time Blair had visitors and she didn't seem to mind. Named Carl. Carl had a mentee and both of them didn't seem like to Henry very much.

"You look too rough and uncultured. I hope after this you'll leave as soon as possible"

And also don't come back, but they didn't say that. Henry just utterly ignored them to their anger. He had just eaten and Megan explained but Blair only smiled saying she understood. This caused Carl to seethe in anger because prep time was two hours. Big glaring eyes said 'tell us in advance if you're eating before you come' but the hand gestures said 'we don't care if you ate or not. Food was prepared so eat'. Seeing Carl seethe in anger caused the mentee to glare in anger as though they were personally affronted.

Each of Blair's peer had their own mentee but everyone had their own personalities and views. Carl was the only one who seemed unreasonable. Would be unreasonable for the entire night but this was like a rookie trying to flex on a professional. Even if the professional was just one day on the job, he was still a professional with years of experience before getting the promotion.
