Chapter 53 - Duty (HERO Prologue)

January 22, 2022

Words: lost

There exists a group of people that protects the balance of the world, to cast judgement on those who defy the laws of nature. Creatures who somehow traveled to this world, punished. Reincarnators who remembered their past Identity, punished. An organization that plots to destroy the world, punished. We, who cast judgment, are called the "Overseers."

For the members of the elusive society to maintain the equilibrium of different worlds, we study the forbidden knowledge of the universe to grasp our understanding as an overseer. The flow of mana in the universe, the cycle of reincarnation, the governance of the Gods, the creation of the worlds, the history of different worlds一 all this we learn to become an overseer. We utilize the use of the arcane arts, an inferior power used by gods, to protect ourselves and the balance of the world we are assigned in.

Within the society, the akashic records library, which contained the lost knowledge of the universe, can only be accessed by those who devoted themselves to the realm of study of Overseers. The library contains the past, present, and future, a useful place for an overseer to study.

Overseers are only allowed to interfere with the physical world if need be. We cannot be rash and disturb the Inhabitants.

"... So, the fact that I am here with you is not within the protocol of an overseer, or so that is was I personally think."

Inside the rocking carriage was a little girl who had short, pink hair sitting beside me.

"Do you understand now why I'm helping you," I asked, scowling at her carefree expression.

"Sorry, the carriage was rocking so much I couldn't hear you. Can you repeat that again, mister?" she said in a condensing voice, gesturing to whisper to her ear. I swear this child.

"We'll talk when we arrive at our destination," I said, breathing in her ear. She jumped back, somehow startled from my voice. Her face flushed in red, to which she quickly covered with her hand.

---------

I can't believe I did not supervise her properly when I was assigned to take care of this child. This was all before the rampage of The goddess of destruction began.
