You move my soul, you melt my heart,
When you hold my face in your little hands,
It's tear-jerking when you think daddy's hurt,
And you run to hold me in your little arms.
I'm not sure I know how to be a father,
But I'm learning, and I'll do and be the best I can,
And I know you're also learning to be a daughter,
And we'll roll out this ribbon together, you and I.
We brought you into an uncertain world,
There'll be times when even I cannot save you,
There'll be good times and times tides are hurled,
But may nothing be too strong for your anchor.
Find something that'll always ground you,
A homing beacon, should you ever lose your way,
Something that could never change, something true,
As I found mine in love, in God and poetry.
There's heartache and there's disappointment,
But there's also love and goodness all around us,
Seek the best of the good and remain benevolent,
And let nothing ever put the light in you out.
Always know that there's a home for you in me,
My arms'll be open should you ever come running,
But if someday I'm not here, wherever, however I'll be,
I hope you'll still have this letter lying around.
