Her fingers tightened around her phone before she placed it down on the table beside her.
"Thanks," she said, her voice still distant, but there was a flicker of something softer in her eyes. She took the flowers from him, setting them gently on the coffee table before looking up again.
Andrei wasn't sure what he had expected. Maybe for her to smile, to soften just a little. But no—she looked at him as though she were studying a foreign object, something untrustworthy.
"I wasn't interrupting anything, was I?" Andrei's voice was colder now, and he couldn't stop himself from asking. "A call from David, huh?"
Suzanne froze. The change in the atmosphere was palpable. Andrei saw her face tighten, as if she had been caught doing something she didn't want him to witness. He'd watched her countenance shift before when David's name was spoken, but this time was different. There was no way to hide her distress.
