The first day he set eyes on Suzanne and how he was so sure that he didn't want to have anything to do with her. But seeing her in that bed unconscious, he was sure that a lot of things had changed between them.
His ideas were disorganized, falling over one another. He had spent so many months erecting barriers, unwilling to let anyone in. But Suzanne had entered his life, and she had broken down those barriers with nothing but her honesty, compassion, and pain.
Despite their long relationship, he had never completely seen her for who she was. She had never completely opened up to him, and he had never given her the opportunity to do so. He reflected on the flowers and the tiny actions he had done to win her back.
They felt inconsequential today, in comparison to what she really wanted. Why would he buy her flowers if he couldn't take the time to understand her? To help her through the grief and pain she was carrying?
