Chapter 31: "This is a matter of life or death"
Enzo's heart sank as he watched Kiara being dragged away by the men. He wanted to scream, to run after them and stop them, but his legs felt weak and he couldn't move. He was filled with regret, knowing that if he had only gone to the police, this might not have happened. "I should have called for help," he thought, his head spinning with self-blame.
Just then, a sharp pain stabbed through his lower abdomen, and he groaned. He reached into his back pocket, pulling out his phone and struggling to navigate the screen. Finally, he found the number he was looking for and dialed it. He held his breath as the phone rang.
As Enzo's voice, weakened by pain and blood loss, struggled to find purchase in the darkness that threatened to claim him, a lifeline emerged in the form of a gentle voice at the end of the phone.
"Hello?" the voice repeated, concern evident in the soft tones. "Can you hear me?"
