Chapter 28 - A stony camp

Then sun was starting to set when I reached the camp. I sent some units out to hunt for horned-rabbits before I sat down at a campfire next to the portal.

My summon unit skill had been upgraded to D-rank. It had improved drastically in many ways.

For starters I was able to add a beast type unit to my unit roster. A single use ability was flashing on my status screen. When I pushed it, I would be able to choose one.

My unit cap had changed to 20/40.

And the last thing was a new passive class-skill.

Skill: Strength of veterans (Passive): Units that survive for an extended period becomes veterans. +20 to all attributes.

With this skill I had to show more care to my units. If I could keep them alive, they would become stronger.

I pushed the flashing ability on my status screen.

*Choose a unit*

*Wolf - Boar - Spider - Giant Rat - Shadow Panther*

Hmm, I was very conflicted. Boar, spider and giant rats, didn't appeal to me at all.

But the wolf and panther made my brain hurt. On one side I had always loved wolves. Beautiful creatures, that would suit my human core units.

But on the other hand. Panthers. I mean come on. An army of shadow panthers would be awesome.

I had to go with the wolf in the end. Their cousins, the dogs, had always been a great ally to humans. And I didn't want to break tradition.

*Wolf has been added to unit rooster.*

Of course I had to summon one right away.

A large black wolf appeared, with long dense fur and disturbingly big fangs.

"Sit."

It sat down with a straight back. It Almost looked like it was saluting me.

Wolf. Level N/A.

Health: 155. Mana: 40. Fatigue: 1/175.

Class: Legion Beast.

Skill: Dash. Crunch. Tracking.

It seemed strong enough.

I summoned 4 more, 3 brown wolves and a white one. Looking closer I found out that the white wolf was a female. I made them hunt in the nearby forest.

Waiting for the units to return to camp, I moved to the big piles of stone and brick, that the spearmen had gathered.

After collecting 20 stone by hand, I got a nice surprise. Stone, was now considered loot. And just by walking close to the piles, it would instantly transfer into my inventory.

I now had a lot of stone in my inventory, and my camp area looked a lot cleaner.

I started to play with it in the inventory.

After a while I had to admit, that I was not particularly creative. I ended up making a square-formed room. I placed it at the edge of my camp clearing. Near the forest where my wolves was hunting.

A 10 meter long, 10 meter across and 3 meter high stone building appeared out of nowhere. It had a single entrance where a single door would fit, eventually.

I went to the stone chair I had made, and put it inside my house. I then continued to produce a table suitable for four people, and made 3 more chairs. Finally I created a fireplace and a stone bed in the corner.

I didn't have a mattress or anything, so I would be sleeping in the open tonight.

The wolves returned faster than the other units. While my spearmen prepared the meat, I made some final adjustments to my company.

10 archer-units accompanied by 10 wolves. 15 spear-units and 5 sword-units.

I was done for the day. Laying on the grass near the portal, looking into the clear night sky, with my cloak wrapped around me. I eventually fell asleep.

I awoke some time later, wolves was howling nearby. I realized it was my own units.

"I will have to get used to that." I went back to sleep.

When I finally woke up. My units was already up and about. They used to need my specific commands, but after the skill ranked up, it seemed like they could remember previous task orders. Being restless, they had decided to start working themselves.

They had even assigned patrols and guards themselves. I was rather proud as I watched my clearing so full of activity.

I decided to start building the wall, before heading out for todays dungeon.

Piles of stone was already littering all along the perimeter. But I found out that, that task was no longer needed. As I walked along the edge, where the trees and ruins made the natural barrier, stones kept flying into my inventory.

I spend the better part of the morning, walking the edge multiple times, ever expanding my path into the ruins.

In the end, I had 50 stacks of 1000 stones in my inventory, and I felt ready to begin building the wall.

There was about 150 meter from the portal in the center, to the forest edge, all the way around. So, before I began to make the wall, I made my 5 sword-units stand guard, while I made the 15 spear-units remove as much tall grass and plants as possible from the inner area.

I started to form a large gate in my inventory. When I was done, I walked along the path from the portal, to the intersection were the right and left path started. There, at the end of the wall-gate path, I placed the gate.

It was 5 meters tall, very strong in stone, as I had added extra layers for density. The gate itself, was not there, obviously. But when I could make one, it would be a two-part door. Each door 3 meters tall and 2 meters wide. The gateway itself had 1 small tower in each side, just enough room for two archers to maneuver in. It was 10 meters long in total, a small stairway leading to the top of the towers in each side, and a small runway on top of the doors, connecting the towers. Another 3 or 4 archers could possibly stand there.

After my mana returned, I went to the other side of the portal, and made a similar one, 150 meters down the path that led to the captains camp.

Now all I had to do, was to make the wall. I wanted it solid, so it consumed a lot of stone. I started at the gate towards the captains camp.

I made the wall 1 meter thick, 3 meter tall, with a thin saw-tacked wall on top of that, facing outwards. This way my units had one meter to maneuver on, on top of the wall, and a one meter high, saw-tacked thin wall to hide behind.

I was ecstatic when I noticed, that when I put the wall-part close to the gate, it would fuse with it. This just made my work more easy, yet no less tedious.

This was repetitive work, but seeing the wall take form made me so excited I couldn't stop.

It wasn't before much later, when I only needed about 20 more meters to complete the circle wall, that I was disturbed.

"Holy shit Frey! You've been seriously busy!"

It was Rolf, Chioma, Magnus, Charlotte and Thomas.

"Have you been working all night? Did you even eat today?" Rolf continued speaking as they came close.

"And what's up with those wolves!" Charlotte was hiding behind Magnus big body.

I hadn't realized that I had spend most of the day building the wall. It was already late in the afternoon.

"Oh hi guys! I guess I lost track of time when I found out, how to use my profession properly. And Magnus! I'm so happy to see you safe and sound!"

Magnus came and gave me a big hug. "And I'm truly happy to see you too Frey! This place looks amazing!"

I had to look around myself.

Two huge gates in either end, with towers extending into a magnificent medieval wall. The wall curved perfectly in a circle, surrounding a grass area that covered 150 meter all around the center, where the profession portal was standing.

Only two things was missing, the 20 meter gab that I hadn't made yet, and some stairs or other way to reach the top of the wall from the inside. But I thought it was good work, for a single day.

Rolf started to laugh as he looked at me. I realized how stupid I looked while watching my own work. It made me laugh wholeheartedly with him.

"Come! My units have gathered a lot of meat. Let's roast some rabbits and talk."

We made a huge bonfire outside my stone house, were we gathered and Chioma roasted the meat on sticks. She had also brought a basket of different vegetables, that she mixed into the meat sticks.

I couldn't wait to taste food again. Apparently she had been cooking the whole day at the other camp, earning coppers, as everyone wanted her food. She was yet the only one with the chef-profession.

When I finally sunk my teeth into the meat and vegetables. I cried.

The sensation of flavor on my tongue was an indescribable pleasure, that I thought I would never experience again.

I was so happy, that as a thank you gift, I handed Chioma the tome.

Passive skill: Apply venom.

She was very grateful, it complimented her skills and class greatly.

She could now sneak close to an enemy, and just before stabbing from behind, she could activate the passive skill, and with some luck, apply a poison to her foe. Minimizing the activation time, to preserve her mana.

They all agreed to sleep here and just enjoy the evening. The next day, we would discuss what had happened in the captains camp, why they had arrived so late.
