Kirigan's POV
"Not now," I said to her while trying to avoid having any conversation with her. I knew where it would lead to. This was not the right time to start doing that.
"Oh no, this is exactly the right time for that," she said stubbornly as we walked to my room.
The minute we got in, I started to undress as she stood there staring at me in anger. She was heaving from all the race and things we had gone through that night.
"What is it?" I asked when I was in my underwear.
"You clearly left me to take Jane? What kind of crazy, sick man are you?"
"The kind who expected his betrothed to do what she was asked to do. You could have come back and gotten the general to save me. You could have told the men to save me. What if more assassins showed up? What was I going to do with a blind girl and you standing around? We would all be dead."
"I…" she tried to explain herself before noticing how stupid her thoughts were as she held back her words and fell on the chair in anger.
"I needed you to do something and you didn't do it. You don't trust me, you never did."
"I did trust you."
"But somehow you followed me out there and decided to endanger yourself and me too."
"I saw you going out with that girl at night."
"A letter arrived for her and I read it and found it suspicious. I decided to go with her so I would protect her since I didn't want make a scene."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Would you have believed me if I did?"
She opened her mouth again to talk but then closed it quickly. It was very clear she didn't have anything to say and defend herself with.
"I'd like to be alone right now," I sighed.
We stared at each other for some time before she got up and exited the room.
When she was gone, I called the guards and told them to search the market for the bodies and arrest them, but they returned with no bodies.
Apparently, the assassins had taken flight.
I slept that night, angry at how Trina could have endangered my life but happy that everything had worked out for my good.
At least I had not had a seizure or anything and I was safe.

I woke the next morning and dressed up, heading for the garden to have my morning dose of sunshine, when I found Jane being interrogated by multiple elders with Trina by her side.
This had me mad as I walked to them to know what was going on.
"Good morning elders," I nodded to them as they bowed to me. "What can I do for you today and why are you badgering my maid?"
The three bearded men looked at Trina who had a defiant face on her. She had clearly said something and now I was curious as to what had happened.
"Miss Trina here gave us news that your maid here set up an assassin attempt on your life last night. Was that true?"
I gasped after hearing this.
"Trina!" I growled. "What did you say?!"
"I just told them the truth."
"The truth." Now I was mad. "The truth is that I found you cheating yesternight as I was in a walk with my maid."
She gasped. "I never cheated. Why would you lie against me?"
"Then why lie against the maid. She has done nothing to deserve this torture."
She smiled evilly while looking at Jane. "Then prove that she's blind."
"What?" Now I knew Trina had a crazy idea up her sleeve.
"Let's have a test to see if she's blind or not."
My heart started to thump as I prayed this would not be what I thought it to be.
"What do you propose?" An elder asked the woman as I rolled my eyes.
"Come on elder. Don't buy into her madness."
"Listen to yourself, prince kirigan. Calling your own betrothed mad. Isn't that a shameful thing to do?"
With that, I sighed and decided to keep quiet and listen to them talk.
"I propose she takes the poison test," Trina smiled evilly. "If she is truly blind, she'll live, if she's not, she'll die. Either way, the choice is yours."
"No," I shook my head, not allowing it. "That test had been abolished a long time ago. Even my father would not listen to such an idea."
But Trina was not about to give up. "Then it means your blind maid isn't blind after all, and you prince Kirigan knows about it but keeps her anyway, fooling the good people of this palace and the kingdom as a whole."
"Trina, what are you doing?" I whispered sharply. She was putting me in trouble. This could cost me my royal status.
"Teaching you a lesson to not mess with me," she whispered back before looking back at the elders who were whispering to each other on the decision to take.
When they were done, they looked at me with a smile on their faces.
"Well, Prince Kirigan. It appears we the members of the council and elders have decided that your maid would take the blind test. If we find her guilty then you know the drill. We don't need to worry about anything if your maid is truly blind."
But then I wondered why they would do this kind of thing.
I knew fighting against them would make this matter escalate and I decided to go with whatever they wanted.
While the elders set up the table and Trina smiled at us from a distance, I looked at Jane with a sad smile.
"I guess this is the end," I sighed as she tilted her head to the side with her head on the ground.
"You should not conclude yet, prince Kirigan. Miracles do happen."
