Chapter 79 - A Letter

A month had passed since Empress Lila ascended to power, and her reign had already garnered a reputation for remarkable economic recovery and sound governance. The kingdom flourished under her rule; trade routes were bustling, the people were content, and corruption had been rooted out with swift, decisive reforms. Yet, despite the financial stability, a new threat loomed on the horizon.

The news of the Northern Empire's crushing victory over the Eastern Empire spread like wildfire. Axel, now Emperor of the North, had led his forces to an overwhelming conquest. The Northern Empire's expansion was unstoppable, and their next target was clear: the Southern Empire of Azro.

Lila's brow furrowed as she listened to her advisor, Aaron, detailing the Northern Empire's movements. The threat of Axel's military power looming over her kingdom left her in a difficult position. Azro had long been an ally, and if it fell to the Northern Empire, her kingdom could be next.

In her private chambers, Lila pondered the situation. The military strength of her kingdom was no match for Axel's forces. Despite all the progress she had made economically, her power was still vulnerable without a strong army. And the only answer that kept returning to her was Axel, her first husband.

The thought sent a shiver down her spine. "Axel…" Even after all this time, she still felt the weight of his presence. But the Axel she remembered might no longer exist. He had risen to become the Emperor of the North, a man hardened by war and loss. And yet, in her mind, Axel didn't remember her.

"Your Majesty," Aaron interrupted her thoughts, his voice gentle but serious. He had become her most trusted advisor over the past month, always by her side through difficult decisions. "The Northern Empire's movement toward Azro will not stop. If we don't act now, we will lose a vital ally, and the North's forces will be at our doorstep next."

Lila nodded, her ruby-red eyes reflecting the weight of the decision she was about to make. "I understand, Aaron. But the only one capable of helping us is Emperor Axel. He may be our only hope."

Aaron hesitated for a moment before speaking. "Empress… are you certain you want to approach him? Emperor Axel."

Lila stood, her posture regal and composed, though her mind was swirling with conflicting emotions. "I have no choice, Aaron. My duty is to this kingdom. If it means protecting our people, I will seek him out."

Aaron bowed his head slightly, his loyalty unwavering. "As you wish, Your Majesty. I will arrange for the emissaries to reach out to the Northern Empire."

Lila nodded, though her thoughts drifted back to the memories she had long buried. Would Axel remember her if they met again? Or had he truly erased their past from his mind?

As Aaron left the room, Lila sat by the window, staring out at the horizon. 'Axel', she thought, her heart torn between duty and the remnants of a past love.

But no matter what happened, she would face him, as the Empress of her kingdom, prepared to do whatever it took to secure their future—even if it meant confronting the man who once held her heart.

After an hour, Lila sat at her ornate desk, the soft glow of candlelight illuminating the paper before her. She had just finished writing a letter, each stroke of the pen deliberate and precise, carrying the weight of her kingdom's future on every word. The letter was addressed to Emperor Axel of the Northern Empire—her former husband, now a formidable ruler.

The request was simple, yet monumental: an alliance. But beneath the formalities, it was much more than that. It was a plea for survival, for the strength that her kingdom desperately needed to face the growing threat of war.

With the letter sealed, Lila called out, her voice calm but firm. "Aaron."

Her trusted advisor entered swiftly, bowing slightly before meeting her gaze. His eyes flickered with concern, knowing full well the gravity of the situation. "Your Majesty."

"I've written a letter to Emperor Axel," Lila said, handing him the sealed envelope. "I need you to deliver this to our emissary immediately. It must reach the Northern Empire as soon as possible."

Aaron took the letter carefully, understanding the weight it carried. "I will see to it at once, Your Majesty."

As he turned to leave, Lila stopped him with a soft, but firm tone. "Aaron."

He paused, turning back to face her.

"If Emperor Axel agrees to this alliance, we will have the military strength we need to defend our kingdom. But if he refuses…" She let the sentence hang in the air, her ruby eyes darkening with the weight of her thoughts.

Aaron straightened, understanding the implications. "Then we will find another way, Your Majesty. We always do."

Lila gave a brief nod. "We will. But I hope it won't come to that."

With a final bow, Aaron left the room, the letter in hand, leaving Lila alone with her thoughts once more.

As she stared at the flickering flames of the candles, memories of Axel drifted through her mind. Their shared history, filled with both love and betrayal, was a distant echo now. She couldn't afford to let personal feelings cloud her judgment. She was no longer the woman she had been when they first met. She was Empress Lila now, and her kingdom depended on her strength.

But deep down, beneath the layers of responsibility and power, a small part of her couldn't help but wonder—if Axel read her letter, would he remember her? Would it stir something within him?

Shaking the thoughts away, Lila steeled herself. Whatever the outcome, she would face it head-on, as she always had.

The future of her kingdom rested in the hands of a man she once knew better than anyone. Now, all she could do was wait.

As Lila sat deep in thought, the soft knock on her door was unexpected. Before she could respond, Aaron entered, his face pale with shock.

"Your Majesty," he said, his voice unusually tight.

Lila frowned, sensing the weight of his news. "What is it, Aaron? Did the letter not make it to Emperor Axel?"

Aaron swallowed hard, his hands trembling slightly as he clutched the letter she had written. "Your Majesty, the letter was unnecessary. Emperor Axel... he's already here."

Lila's heart skipped a beat. "What?"

"He's outside the palace, requesting an audience with you," Aaron continued, his eyes wide with disbelief. "He arrived with a contingent of soldiers, unannounced, and is waiting at the gates."
