Chapter 6 - The dream

Natalie came in to the room with a small smile on her face, Melinda and Betty were arguing over what to dress Lilith in for the day, and she stood there naked with a dreamy look on her face and head in the clouds.

"Girls please pick a dress, Lady Lilith is standing there naked." Natalie said as she placed an adorned basket on the desk.

Lilith seemed to realize she was indeed standing there bare and she blushed.
"Why do you torture me so…" she said in humiliation.

The girls laughed and decided on a rose pink dress with white lace. They adorned her hair with a few butterfly pins and did soft make up, she liked her outfit today, it was fresh and non restricting.

"What is that Natalie?" Lilith asked pointing at the basket.

"It is a gift basket, it has figs and other fruits, along with a small note." Natalie said.

Lilith looked in the basket decorated with white ribbons and flowers, the figs looked plump and juicy.

"Who is it from?" Melinda asked as she sat on the corner of the bed with Betty.

"It's from Thalia…" Lilith said.

As she picked one up she felt strange, "I shouldn't share these yet…something is off…" she thought as she smelled something different on the fruit.

It wasn't a strong distinguished smell, but it was different. She split in half with her hands and there was a bit more juice than normal in a fig.

She raised the fruit up to her lips and bit into it, there was no strange flavor so she relaxed.

The girls started talking about seeing Sebastian in his office, Lilith chuckled when she saw their blushing faces, she thought they were adorable for crushing on a guy older than them.

As they continued bickering and teasing, Lilith felt cramps in her stomach, and her head got a little lightheaded but she shook it off.
"Im probably just stressed." She thought.
Missing her family and friends was starting to take a heavy toll on her, especially since they were all she could think about every day.

All of a sudden her stomach started feeling very hot, and her throat got itchy. She cleared her throat and ignored it, she began to tease Melinda about liking someone older when Natalie and the girls had a horrified expression on their faces.

Lilith felt like she was drowning and she looked down, there was blood dripping from her nose and mouth onto the light colored dress.
She coughed and as her eyes rolled to the back of her head her body slowly fell off the chair.

Natalie caught her right before her head hit the ground, and quickly called for help and Liliths body started convulsing, the girls were crying and trying to hold her down, the last thing she heard was Natalie telling the girls to go get help.

Vincent was coming back from sword fighting with Cyrus, they cut it short because they got hungry and wanted to eat inside.

"What do you think of your wife, brother?" Cyrus asked.

Vincent took a deep breath, "She stays out of the way for the most part, the only times we spoke we argued. She is still a Grimrose so I don't think we should lower our guards, i'm sure she has something planned." He said in a tired tone.

Cyrus hummed. "Right, although she is very different from the rumors. I wonder what behavior caused all those stories about her…" Cyrus said curiously.

"It's only a matter of time before her real intentions come through, I just hope we see it in time." Vincent said.

Melinda and Betty were running towards them with red eyes and tears streaming down their face. They talked over each other and were pointing towards the mansion.

"Wait girls please, I can't understand what you're saying, one at a time please." Vincent said concerned.

"It's Lady Lilith! She was poisoned!" They yelled.

Cyrus scoffed. "I guess this could be considered one of her plans right?" He said, but when he looked at his brother he was already running into the mansion.

He grinned. "Well would you look at that." He thought, not even a minute ago Vincent was speaking ill of her, and now he was running to her.

There was cold blood running through her veins. She felt like she was floating, she was somewhere dark, barely lit up by a glowing blue moon and blue mist. She slowly felt her feet stand on something steady, looking down it looked like grass, with a few rose petals and twigs laid out everywhere which she could feel on under her bare feet.

She looked up and was greeted by two walls, covered in purple roses and what looked like an entrance to a maze.

There was what looked like a glowing gold silhouette, the shape of a woman's body and a soft voice calling her name, her real name, Estella.

"Who are you?" Estella called out as she walked towards the silhouette, into the maze. She came across a water fountain that the silhouette floated around, she looked in the water and saw her reflection.

"Oh my god…it's me…the real me…" she said as she touched her face, happy to see her appearance from the real world. She tried reaching into the fountain and a manicured hand grabbed hers from inside the water and pulled her in, her heart dropped as she went through the cold liquid, but was surprised to be dry as she fell onto grass. Like if she she fell through a loop and landed in the same spot she was before, but this time, the silhouette was now Lilith. The original Lilith from the novel.

"She definitely has a villains appearance…" she thought.

Lilith stood in all her glory, a cold look in her eye, a confident stance, and a scowl on her lips.

"We have to cross the finish line." Lilith said.

"What finish line? What do you mean we?" Estella asked confused.

"You have to achieve what I couldn't, change the ending, find the culprit." Lilith said walking towards her to face her properly.

"What do you want me to do…" Estella asked again now more confused.

"You have to change our ending, not everything is written the way it was." Lilith said as she bagan to fade.

"No. Give me some clues, please! Don't leave!" Estella tried catching Lilith but she slipped through fingers as the rest of her turned into purple rose petals. Estella slammed her fist onto the ground confused and angry. " I want to go home!"

She began to cry as she laid on the cold grass hugging herself.

The duchess paced outside the guest room, Vincent, Thalia, the duke, Cyrus, Natalie and the girls were waiting patiently.

Sniffles could be heard from the girls as they waited for any news from the doctor.

Natalie sighed in frustration. " It all makes sense now…" she said softly.

The duchess looked at her concerned. "What do you mean Natalie?"

"Lady Lilith looked worried, she noticed something off about the fruit, like if she had a feeling it had been tampered with, her instincts are strong and always on point. However she decided to eat it since it was a present…" Natalie said as she cried a bit.

"Who gave her the present?" Vincent asked angrily.

Natalie just looked at Thalia but didn't say anything, waiting for her to speak up.

"It was me, but I promise I never tampered with it! I asked Wynona to prepare it as an offer to become close friends!" Thalia cried desperately pleading innocence.

"Where is Wynona?" Cyrus asked.

Wynona was Thalias personal maid and was always next to her, so her being gone wasn't a good sign.

Thalia exclaimed. "No! She couldn't have!"

Vincent and Cyrus ran to her to hold her and comfort her, "It's okay, we know it wasn't you, but we will have to find Wynona, this is murder." Vincent said apathetically.

Natalie glared at them since they haven't even gotten news of Lilith being dead or alive, it was offensive that they just assumed she was dead instead if hoping she survived.

The doctor came out of the room a bit nervous and everyone crowded him immediately. Sebastian ran up to them, he just heard the news of Liliths poisoning.

"How is she?" The duchess asked desperately.

"She will live, luckily she didn't consume a large amount, she will be better in about three days with this prescription." He said a bit sad. They took a deep breath of relief.

"What was it?" Vincent asked as he took the medicine from the doctor.

"Effulgence." He said bitterly.

They looked at him concerned, "It's a drug made from the moonshine flower, its a plant that only blooms when the moonlight hits it, its hard to find since its rare, it can be found in the deepest part of the forest. It has been a recent finding and that's why I carry an antidote, it has been used over 20 times this past month. 18 of the times used it caused death, thank god I was here for your headaches My lady, or else she would have died." He said in a sad tone.

The duchess sighed, the girls fell to the floor in relief, remembering everything vividly, it made them shudder.

Vincent was somewhat relieved as he thought the whole situation over. "She had a feeling there was something wrong, and she still consumed it?" He thought.

All of a sudden Thalia fainted and all the attention went to her, except for Natalie and the girls who ran into the guest room to hold Liliths hand.

Thalia laid in bed still dizzy, "Are you okay now?" Cyrus asked sweetly.

"Yes…it was just so much all at once, I'm very worried for Lilith…is she awake yet?" She asked with tearful eyes.

"No, she is still unconscious and they found Wynona running into the forest, it looks like she was trying to escape, they are taking her in for questioning." Vincent said.

Thalia let out a shaky breath. "I can't believe she would do something so horrible..she was always so nice and gentle…" Thalia said.

"She hasn't been here as long as everyone else, we're thinking she's a spy." Cyrus said as she held Thalias small delicate hand.

Vincent couldn't shake off the thought of Lilith eating something even though she knew it was poisoned.

As he watched his brother comfort Thalia, he couldn't stop thinking if maybe Lilith was trying to die on purpose.

Lilith could now hear sniffling and soft murmurs. She woke up abruptly and sat up, a pissed off look on her face as she clenched her jaw and a vein was popping on her forehead.

Even though she looked scary the girls threw themselves onto her and held her tightly as they sobbed into her neck.

Natalie watched her more closely. "My lady…" she whispered as she saw such an intense anger on Liliths face.

Lilith snapped out of it and suddenly felt like a ton of bricks fell on her and she laid back down. She started tearing up but held back on crying, the pain she felt all around her body was too much.

She finally acknowledged the girls and patted their heads. "You must have been so scared…" she said in a soft motherly voice.

They cried more and would mutter sweet nothings to Lilith hoping to make her feel better. The duchess walked in and felt relief when she saw Lilith awake and functional.

"Oh Lilith…how are you feeling? Girls please get off her you'll hurt her…" she said.

Natalie bowed towards the duchess, her guilt from not being able to protect her master getting heavier every minute.

Lilith smiled. "Im fine now, I just feel very weak, i'm sure i'll be up on my feet in no time."

The duchess smiled and sat down on the chair next to the bed. " We have caught the possible culprit, have any maids acted strange toward you recently?" She asked.

Lilith thought about all the maids that still looked at her suspiciously, but just sighed since there was no way of telling which of them all would do it.

They continued speaking about how things were going besides the poisoning, since Lilith looked exhausted the duchess didn't want to overwhelm her with questions about who could have wanted this on her. When Lilith got sleepy again the duchess left and looked back at the girls, they were unmoving as they laid on each side if Liliths body, watching her closely with concern in their eyes and Natalie sat in the chair to watch her as well.

The duchess smiled. "They must really love her." She thought as she slowly and quietly shut the door.

The duke was in the underground interrogation chamber with his sons and Wynona, three guards were standing behind her as she knelt on the floor crying and begging to be spared.

"Why did you tamper with Lilith's food, who gave you that drug?" Vincent asked angrily.
Even though he hated Lilith, he didn't necessarily want her to die or suffer. After all she hadn't even done anything wrong so far, even if she was framed she still kept her cool and only tried to prove her innocence.

Her lips quivered as she closed her eyes, she wasn't answering any of their questions.
The duke got angry and they pulled on the chain that was holding her wrists together making her fall on her face.

She exclaimed in pain but kept her mouth shut. He got angry and looked at the guards, "Call Monte, he will make her talk." The duke said as they dragged her away, she was screaming begging for her life when she heard Monte would interrogate her, and they simply closed the doors behind them as they walked out ignoring her pleas.

"Do you think she would poison herself?" Cyrus asked his brother.
"I don't see why she would, she's stubborn, theres no way she would take an easy way out of a situation." Vincent said as he scratched the back of his head stressed with this new problem.

"Who is trying to kill her? First the portrait, then the missing documents we're still investigating, and now poison, in such a short time span as well.." he thought.

"Maybe she's doing it to get sympathy points, no one really talks to her and she's always by herself." Cyrus said.

"No, she isn't like that…at least from what I have seen so far it doesn't seem like she's too desperate on getting our attention." Vincent remembered the times she deliberately said she didn't care for him or the marriage, there is no way that proud woman would take it back.

"True…she has never been the one to reach out first…she doesn't speak unless spoken to, and she gets along better with her maids than any of us.." Cyrus said as he smiled at the thought of the fig tree.

"By the way, the ball is next month, kingdoms from all over the world will be present, it would be a good time to expand business and property with other countries." Cyrus said.

"Yeah thats a good idea, let's go eat something I forgot I was hungry." Vincent said as the went back upstairs.

The afternoon sun on warming her face woke her up, she groaned in discomfort as she sat up. Her body was still hurting and her stomach felt like it was being dipped in acid, her head like it was being split in two.

A knock came from the door and she winced, the knock sounded so loud in her head. "Come in.." she said in raspy voice.

Her throat felt like she was swallowing needles every time she breathed.

"My Lady, how are you feeling?" Sebastian asked sadly, he had been out if the mansion yesterday but as soon as he got news of her being sick from a messenger bird, he came back in a rush.

She rested her back on the soft velvety headboard. "I feel like shi-" she cut herself off as coughed.

He rushed to her and put the tray he was carrying on the night stand. She sniffed and looked at him with sad eyes, his heart hurt seeing her so defenseless.

"Here I have your medicine and some porridge." He said as he sat on the bed, she smiled softly as he put the small cup up to her lips.

"Not gonna lie…being pampered like this by a hot guy isn't so bad…" she thought as he she sipped the sour liquid, gagging a bit she forced herself to drink it and she shivered.

He chuckled at her reaction, "Here i'll help you with the porridge." He said as he blew a bit on the spoonful of porridge so she wouldn't burn her tongue.

She was on cloud nine being spoiled by him, her eyes focused in on his face, his bright green eyes were focused on her lips as he fed her.

Taking this opportunity to stare she absorbed every detail she could of his face, his almond shaped eyes, his nose, his chin, the shape of his thin eyebrows.

He looked so gentle, she reached out and touched his hair, it was so soft and silky as she it behind his ear.

He stopped moving and she realized what she did, his eyes wide and mouth slightly open.

She was going to apologize to him when a deep voice came from the door. "I hope i'm not interrupting." Vincent said in a sarcastic tone.

Sebastian sprung up from his seat and he bowed, Lilith sighed disappointed that they were interrupted.

"I'll take over." Vincent said glaring, Sebastian looked at Lilith and she softly smiled and nodded.

He bowed again and rushed out. "I'm glad to see you're awake." Vincent said in a sour tone as he sat on the bed where Sebastian was sitting before, and he picked up the porridge.

She scoffed. "You sound like you're not very excited I woke up."

He huffed. "Just eat please." He said as he shoved the spoon in her mouth, she gagged and punched his stomach and he hunched over. Some porridge spilled out from her mouth and her face got red in anger.

"Why would you shove it in so hard! That hurt!"she yelled in her voice even raspier than before.

He grunted as he held his stomach, "well what do you expect I can't keep waiting for you to move!" He exclaimed since she was the one taking forever to eat from the spoon.

"You still can't just shove it in like that! What if I start bleeding! I'm sensitive right now!"She angrily said as she massaged her throat, she felt like she was getting stabbed to death with the spoon.

"Oh dear…" a soft voice came from outside the door, and high heels clicking fast as the person ran away.

Vincent quickly checked to see who ran off, when he opened the door he saw his mother running away and he could see her ears red.

He realized what she thought they were probably doing and he looked over at Lilith.
When she caught on she started laughing and coughing, the horrified look on his face was amazing.

Trying to keep a straight face failed him, when he saw her laughing heartily he couldn't help himself and he chuckled.
He sat back down beside her and offered her a spoonful of porridge, she calmed down and smiled at him sweetly.

When she smiled he felt a giddy feeling in his heart, normally the few times they talked in private she always had a scowl, and seeing a sweet honest smile made his heart skip a beat.

He swallowed down that feeling as he continued feeding her, to his surprise, he realized he wasn't uncomfortable in her presence, and she looked surprisingly relaxed.

"Maybe…she isn't so bad.." he thought.
Natalie came in to the room with a small smile on her face, Melinda and Betty were arguing over what to dress Lilith in for the day, and she stood there naked with a dreamy look on her face and head in the clouds.
