Chereads / Labyrinths of Roses / Chapter 7 - The banker

Chapter 7 - The banker

Four days have passed since she was poisoned, she was able to move around and exercise again even though she still felt a bit sore.

She was finally going to look for a bank in the village, Natalie was doing her hair and make up to go to the market, as her Valet Sebastian had to go as well even though he wanted to stay and finish his paperwork.

She wore a black dress with red ribbons, sweetheart neckline and long sleeves, she had simple jewelry and her hair was loose, Natalie made sure to pick comfortable shoes for her since they would be walking a lot.
As they walked down to the carriage she the duchess, Thalia and Cyrus resting next to the fireplace. Thalia smiled when she saw her. "You look so pretty!" She exclaimed.

The duchess smiled when she saw her up and walking around. "Good morning dear, where are you going?" The duchess asked.

"I'm going to the market to walk around for a while, I feel like exploring." Lilith said as she bowed.

"Please be careful, don't lose her out of your sight." She said as she looked at Natalie.

Natalie bowed and they stepped out, Sebastian was waiting in front of the carriage looking at his stopwatch, he wasn't excited about going but since the duke ordered him to keep an eye on her and assigned him to be her valet.

There was a smooth voice speaking ahead of him, and when he looked up and saw Lilith smiling at him he felt his heart race, he held out his hand so she could step on to the carriage.

"Thank you." She said as she placed the tips of her fingers on the palm of his hand, she got inside the carriage and he regretted letting go of her hand.

He looked down at his hand, it felt like it was burning, the tingling feeling of her soft touch lingered.

Lilith was looking out the window of the carriage, Sebastian and Natalie weren't big talkers so she always ended up watching the scenery, she could see a huge valley with a Lake from where they were. It was beautiful and even from here she could tell the water was crystal clear.

She thought about the last time she went swimming, she was her friends at the beach, Yuki had made the plans to go, she was more of the party girl.

Estella liked clubbing and karaoke bars too but she didn't really take initiative to go anywhere. It's why their friendship worked so well, Yuki was amazing at picking fun places to go, whenever their friend group got together the good vibes were unmatched by anything else.

Noticing they started getting closer to the village she stopped daydreaming and kept an eye out to look for a bank.
The carriage stopped and they got off, the coachman left to find a place to rest and let the horses feed and drink.

"I hear there is a cafe around here that a lot of Ladies like." Natalie said.

"Oh that sounds wonderful, then after we can go to the farmers market!" Lilith said excited. She felt like she was in her rightful place when she saw the commoners working and shopping. Natalie and Sebastian watched her curiously, in their eyes she is a lady who has never known poverty, when in reality Estella was having a really hard time to act like a proper lady in their presence and had no boundaries with her maids.

When they got the cafe there were too many people, the line took about thirty minutes and they got tired of standing just like in Estella's original world, which gave her a sense of comfort and familiarity. Sebastian left to look for a table or at least a bench, so when it was their turn to order they wouldn't have to go looking for a seat, Lilith got a lemon meringue tart and a small strawberry cake, they gave it to her with small disposable plates and forks.

They found Sebastian at a bench under an oak tree, they rushed over and Lilith gave them each a plate. Sebastian looked confused as she served him a slice of the tart and a slice of cake, he looked over at Natalie to see her reaction, but she seemed comfortable and content as she took small bites out of the desserts. He looked at the plate and thought that if they were content it should be fine.

"I don't like sweets though…" he thought as he stared at the pie, "maybe i'll just eat a little bit…"

He was surprised that it wasn't overly sweet, most of the time desserts were so sweet they would make him feel sick, but this one didn't have a lot sugar.

"This would taste good with something bitter." He thought.

While they were distracted eating, Lilith looked around at all the buildings, a couple street signs could be seen and she thought it was convenient for when she came to deposit money in a bank.

She still remembered where it was and knew they were going to pass it again on the way back to the carriage, so she had to make sure to have solid landmarks just in case.

As they headed back she felt like someone was watching her, she turned around and didn't see anything suspicious.

"Normally when Mathew is around i can tell pretty fast, whoever is tailing me must know what they're doing…" she thought as she kept searching.

Sebastian tapped her shoulder and she flinched, looking back at him she took a breath of relief. "I'm sorry I was daydreaming.." she said as she continued walking.

Natalie looked at him, they both felt a weird vibe when she freaked out, but when she quickly shrugged it off and acted like usual they shrugged it off and followed her.

The ride back home was quiet, Lilith wasn't looking out the window like usual and she was focused on her hands.

"Was it fun today my lady?" Natalie asked concerned.

She snapped out of her trance, "oh, yes sorry, sometimes i'm in my own little world." She said apologetically.

Natalie smiled a bit in relief.

"She so serious, I wonder what she's thinking most of the time." Lilith wondered as she looked at Natalies blank face.

That night Lilith pulled out a hooded cape she made secretly. She put her hair in a tight braid and hid it with a short scarf, wrapping it around her head tightly so it wouldn't be seen.

She put on some pants she made and a simple shirt, thanks to shopping at the market she found some flat booties at a stall, she bought them while Sebastian and Natalie were distracted watch lambs be sold off to their new owners, they were adorable as the slept or played so people would enjoy watching them for a while.

The last thing she needed was a mask or something to cover the bottom half of her face. She ended up using the same scarf on her hair to cover her mouth.

As she looked in the mirror she was happy with how well her disguise worked. At certain angles nobody would be able to tell if she was woman or not. "Thank god Lilith is tall, this way if I have to act like a teenaged boy it would be believeable." She thought.

She arranged some pillows to make it seem like she was in bed, and she turned off all of the candles. She made sure to not put any perfume or wear anything that could be recognized to keep herself hidden and not leave any traces anywhere.

She put on the satchel with the money and slowly opened her door, her heart dropped when she saw a figure in the hallway, but felt stupid when she realized it was just a shelf.

Taking a deep breath she stepped out, she had tampered with the soles of the booties to make sure they wouldn't click when she walked.

She made it through the hallways no problem, a few times she would just have to hide in the corner when a guard passed by but they didn't notice her.

In her mind she thought she had planned everything out, but she forgot about something very important, her transportation.

"I'm such an idiot….why would my sergeant let me lead troops on my own…" she thought as she rubbed her temples.

"Okay, no use crying about it now, i'll just have to find something…." She thought when she caught the glimpse of a wheel.

"Wait…is that…a bike!?" She thought excited. She picked it up, it was in good condition and she almost squealed. It looked strange since one wheel was larger that the other but she didn't care.

She rushed out and jumped on, "it's a good quad exercise and its fast, how convenient." She whispered to herself.

It took her 40 minutes to get to the village, "why is their yard so huge…" she thought almost in tears. It took her 15 minutes just to get past their front gates even though she was going 25 miles per hour.
As soon as she got off she lost all strength of her legs and fell on her butt, her legs felt like they were on fire and they wouldn't stop trembling. "God…I missed this feeling.." she thought as she reminisced her gym days, she hasn't been able to get a workout like this since she woke up in Lilith's body. As she cooled down a bit she took slow deep breaths. "Alright, I need to go to that bank." She thought and forced herself up, as walked her legs wobbled and she giggled when she imagined how weird she must look.

The banker was locking the doors, "Am I too late?" Lilith asked shyly.

He looked at her as held up his lantern. "Yes, you'll have to come back in the morning." He said as he looked her over. She removed the scarf from her face so he wouldn't think she was a criminal. "Oh, well you see i'm a traveler, and I really need to deposit some money here because i'm planning on buying a small house in this lovely village, I wonder if maybe just this once you could help me out?" She asked.

He looked like he was thinking about it, "well…sure, just this once young lady.." he said in a tired tone. She smiled sweetly and grabbed his hand. "Oh thank you so much, this really means a lot to me!" She exclaimed.

He sighed as he pulled his hand away and opened the door again, "you said you were looking for a home?" He asked as they sat down.

"Yes, somewhere far and quiet, far from crowds, just me and maybe some cows or chickens…" she said, the banker hummed.

"Not many Ladies have that kind of goal, my respects." he finished counting the money, "well with this amount of money you could even buy a mansion."he said recounting the money and writing down the information.

The money looked different here so she was shocked to hear that. "That sounds nice but that's my life savings so I would like to buy a small discreet home." She said in a dreamy tone hoping she was selling the facade of being a traveler looking for their dream house.

He finished putting everything away. "Alright I just need a name and last name, you could also give me a number for your code." He said as he looked at her.

"Oh…Estella Yamada…and the code is..0336…" she said smiling awkwardly.

She used her real name and code for her apartment to make it easy to remember.

"Okay sounds good, you can come back here whenever you would like to collect your money, however I believe you should contact a realtor to the home you want." The banker said as he put the last files away.

"Yes, thank you for your help." She said as she bowed. He huffed. "Alright well get outta here I need to close up." He said, she laughed and waved goodbye as she left.

She had been in there for about 10 minutes, in total she's been missing for about an hour at least. "I need to hurry back."

As she put the bike back where she found it, her legs shook harder than before and she was really thirsty, a crackling noise could be heard from the other side of the corner looking she saw what looked like a torch coming around. "Shit." She thought and hurried away, moving as quietly as she could she went inside the mansion through the servants entrance and checked thoroughly before going through any doors.

Making it back in her room she finally had a chance to relax, the exhaustion hitting her hard, her legs losing stability from the long and hard bike ride. She took off her disguise and put it in a box to hide it, she went to the restroom and washed her face at the sink, to get rid of dust and sweat.

She finally laid in bed and felt like her soul was leaving her body, the sleepiness got her fast and she knocked out.

Natalie was shaking her side to side, "What…" she groaned. "My lady you have to wake up, please." Natalie pleaded.

"Why..I still have a few hours before I have to help Sebastian work…" she said as she struggled to move. She could barely move her sore legs.

"That's not it my lady, you need to bath and eat breakfast." Natalie said as she dragged Lilith's body out of bed.

"Fine…" Lilith whined.

Natalie set up her breakfast, black tea, a bagel with cream cheese, and a cooked quail. "A quail..for breakfast?" Lilith questioned.

She could tell how much Natalie was staring at her legs, which was understandable since they were shaking uncontrollably. It's a good thing Natalie minds her own business so she didn't have to explain anything.

"Yes, I told the cooks you really like meat." Natalie said proud of herself.

Lilith shrugged, she needed protein anyway.
"Thank you Natalie, I really appreciate that." Lilith said.

A knock came from her door, Natalie looked confused, usually if it was the girls they would just knock and come in.

A knock again, Natalie went to check who it was and her eyes widened. "Oh..master Vincent good morning." She said as she bowed.

Lilith's blew wide open as she looked down at what she was wearing, a short thin nightgown with spaghetti straps, her hair hadn't even been brushed yet. Vincent walked in and looked at her, he looked disturbed when he saw her but he sighed and shook it off.

"I came to eat breakfast with you." He said as a few maids came in setting up his breakfast at her table. She nodded awkwardly, he sat down in front of her reluctantly and looked at her food strangely.
"Quail?" He asked.

"Yes…I really like meat…" she said as she gulped.

"Alright…" he said as he picked up his fork.
He had tea, eggs, a bagel, and what looked like yogurt with fruit and granola.

They ate in silence, he looked at her and noticed her hair, it was messy but in a way he felt like it suited her.

He looked at her chest, it was kind of exposed because of her night gown, her smooth milky skin was tempting. He never noticed how toned her muscles were, he looked at her face and saw her red lips shiny with the juice from the quail.

"Why did you decide to eat with me today?" she asked weirded out by his staring, but also fought the urge to tease him.

"I just noticed how much trouble seems to follow you around, and I feel like it would help us get to know each other a bit…" he said uncomfortably.

She laughed as she covered her mouth with her hand. "So your mother forced you to come." She giggled.

He huffed. "Yeah, it seems she misunderstood what happened last time." He said embarrassed.

She laughed harder and he rolled his eyes.
"Well it's not that funny.." he said poking at his yogurt.

The conversation wasn't as dull as he thought it would be after that, and they enjoyed the rest of their meal, but he needed to go to a meeting with his father and brother so he headed out.

Natalie helped Lilith bathe and get ready for the day, Sebastian was already in the office and left a stack of paperwork on her desk.

When she finally walked in a sweet smell flooded the room. It wasn't in a bad way, it was soft and pleasant, Lilith sat at her desk and started working.

A maid walked in with a cart, there were desserts and some coffee. "Please have some My lady." Sebastian said, he was the one that asked for the desserts to be brought in for her.

The maid brought it to her desk and she ate while she worked, completely focused, Sebastian peaked at her a few times wishing she would glance at him once in a while but she never did.

Vincent talked with Henry Millard, the meeting went well and now they were making some final decisions on the new weapons and gear for the soldiers.

"How is Lady Millard doing?" Vincent asked. Henry smiled. "She's been doing great, she is becoming very close friends with Lady Allard, she is all my wife talks about these days." He said happily.

"Lady Allard? Has Lady Millard spoken that much with my mother?" He asked confused.

"No..I mean Lady Lilith your wife…" Henry looked at him confused.
"Oh, yes Lady Grimrose, I heard she did go visit your home recently.." Vincent said awkwardly.

Henry cleared his throat. "Well…how is she doing?" He asked.

"Oh…well she's doing fine now, after she got poisoned she was a little weak but she seems normal now." Vincent said.

Henry's eyes widened and his breath caught in his throat, he was caught off guard by the fact Vincent just laid it out like that. "She..got poisoned?" He asked in shock.

"Yes, we've caught the person that did it and we have them in observation, we want to figure out who made the order." Vincent explained.

"What drug was used?" Henry asked.

"The doctor called it Effulgence, but we heard others call it moonshine, he said we were lucky he was there since it's a fast acting poison." Vincent said remembering the bloody mess all over Lilith's body, he felt angry again thinking about it.

"I have heard of that poison…it has a high mortality rate.." Henry said in concern.

Vincent sighed. "Yes, honestly..I was worried she wasn't going to make it, but she woke up the next day and was even laughing."

The thought of Lilith almost dying was driving Henry crazy. "I have to go, my wife is waiting for me at home." Henry said as he bowed.

"Alright, be safe, we'll speak again about the mines soon." Vincent said.

Henry rushed out, wanting to get home to his wife and tell her about what he learned today.

Odette was reading a novel when she heard her husband walk into the room. "Hello dear, how did your meeting go?" She asked sweetly. He sat next to her solemnly, "The meeting went great, it was what happened after that shocked me." He said.

She cocked her head and put her book down.
"What's wrong?"

He sighed deeply. "It turns out lady Lilith was poisoned and almost died." He said.

She covered her mouth with her hand. "No…"

"She's okay now, but I think we should visit her soon to make sure she's alright." He said, he knew how much his wife liked Lilith and he wanted her to be in the know.

"Yes…i'll write her a letter now.." she said as she went to the desk.

He smiled as he watched her write, her furrowed brows, and curled lip.
In his eyes she was even more beautiful when she was concentrated, he loved that about her, how much she values and protects her friends is a quality he first noticed about her.

They were 14 when they first met, she was surrounded by people and he was usually awkwardly standing around.

They were introduced when their parents greeted each other and the way she smiled made him start crushing on her.

It all started when they danced together for the first time, he was a nervous wreck but managed to work up the courage to ask her for a dance. To his surprise she gladly accepted, their chemistry was amazing and many people noticed.

After that, they started talking more and he started noticing more things about her, how loyal she was, kind, generous, when she got comfortable around him she would act silly.

Odette quickly became the love of his life, he couldn't imagine a life without her and he started to romantically pursue her.

He would buy her flowers, jewelry, then Dilly, however he noticed that wasn't swaying her much even though she seemed to like him. Paying more attention to what she would talk about, he started to invite her to some trips with him, obviously chaperoned by their valets and servants.

The more he listened to her the more he learned about the things she cared about, her opinions, likes and dislikes. He fell in love with her, the real her, and that's when she was ready to love him back.

She confessed that she loved him before , but she was just waiting for him to grow and realize marriage is more than just material or superficial things, it was about commitment and companionship.

When she turned 17 and he turned 18 they got married, both their parents happy with their decision. So far they have had a few arguments, but they always communicated their feelings and opinions and would find ways to fix their problems.

"Okay, Grace please send this out to the Allard mansion, I hope Lilith accepts my request.." she said in a worried tone.

"I'm sure she will." He said as he held her from behind, he kissed the top of her head and she relaxed as she leaned her head on his chest.

"I love you." She said as she smiled at him.

He felt warmth spreading in his stomach and his heart fluttered in excitement. Looking into her beautiful eyes he kissed her again.
"I love you more."
